Yet he was an American patriot and had a distinguished war record, having flown some 50 combat missions and shot down at least one Japanese Zero.
He was also responsible for doubling, or almost doubling the effective range of the P38 'Lightning' fighter plane by improving the technique of flying them, this was a major contribution to the war effort and moreover, cost nothing.
In fact, it is doubtful if any other American, or indeed Allied, pilot had a war record as unique as that of Lindbergh.
