Sows are female pigs, sorry to correct you there Toni, and Issy and meself are unonymous on this. A female pig ( that's the girly ones) is actually a gilt until it farrows at about 12 months of age. Don't ask what farrowing is as I don't have a clue. Now swine are in fact the generic name for all pigs and hogs, just added that for interest.
