http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landing_at_Suvla_Bay Despite facing light opposition, the landing at Suvla was mismanaged from the outset and quickly reached the same stalemate conditions that prevailed on the Anzac and Helles fronts.

On 15 August, after a week of indecision and inactivity, the British commander at Suvla, Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick Stopford was dismissed. His performance in command was one of the most incompetent feats of generalship of the First World War.

o sung wu,
Is Anzac Day still valid for veterans, You bet it is and I trust it will be valid to them forever.

As for me, I am in a new town and will attend the memorial service, watch the march. Don't know yet if I'll go to the local RSL and join them in a beer. But if not I will have a quiet beer at home and raise my glass to honour our diggers.

Like our pioneers, we owe so much to them. Mostly we take it for granted, but it was their blood, sweat and tears that has made this country. Sadly, sometimes I think the polys do their level best to stuff it up.

Having visited the Australian War Memorial, in Canberra, many times it still is a sobering and reflective experience. All Australians should visit there, at least once.

O Sung Wu, unfortunately there will always be wars waging somewhere in the world, or peacekeeping forces somewhere at least.
So there will always be more 'veterans' to keep the Anzac fires burning.

When I first started nursing, I used to care for World War One and Two veterans in their old age, and then moved on to Korean, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan veterans.
I expect I will be listening to their stories and tending their wounds for many years more.

Hi there BANJO...

I thoroughly agree with your comments associated with the War Memorial in Canberra. Just to quietly stroll through the place is a very moving experience, as one tries to imagine how bad things were in the muddy conditions in the trenches in the Somme and other major battle fronts of WW1. As you say, it's both sobering, and reflective, just trying to imagine what it was like all those years ago now ?

Even if you remain alone on the day, just to pay a solemn homage to those who never returned, is sufficient I believe ? You don't need a loud trumpet or drums, to show how much you value their sacrifice either ?

Hi there SUSEONLINE...

I was a veteran myself, and I can 'never overstate' the value of the care and attention I received from those in the Medical Corps ! Strictly well beyond orders, one of the nurses (a RAAF Flt Lt.Sister) made a personal call home to my mother when I was in Hospital ! Strictly against orders in those days from SV ! I'll never forget the kindness or the risk she took on my behalf ? I love 'em all believe me !

Hi there ONEUNDERGOD...(Johan)

I couldn't agree with you more, when you say many mistakes were made by basically, un-trained and unfit for command, British General's who through arrogance and ignorance caused the deaths of thousands upon thousands of young man on the Western Front ! Still, as they say war is hell, and unfortunately more were still destined to die ? Many thanks for your considerable input, too Johan, and take care.

Hi there CHRISGAFF1000...

Bloody hell mate, I didn't know you were a pilot ! Obviously you have an unrestricted PPL allowing you cross country flights and an IFR instrument rating for your night flying ! Your ETD is 0400k thus you'll be flying IFR for the first couple of hours ? Chris you're absolutely amazing my friend !

Seriously, I managed a (R)PPL with type certifications on 150's, 172's and Piper Tri-Pacer and PA-28's. But it was the cost of solo hours that finally defeated me, and any hope of gaining an unrestricted PPL. I simply couldn't afford it, it was as simple as that. Got my (R)PPL mid 1970's and logged nearly 140hrs solo, with about another 60hrs dual on top of that. An aggregate of a fraction over 200 hours. Failed my medical through an (unremarkable) irregular blood pressure, and surrendered my PPL about the early 1990's. A tale of failure, and hope ?

Mate, please excuse me I'm pretty tired and with this damn cold I might just turn in. As I said Chris, you've astounding me with what you've managed to do, you really have !
