When I was 14 I was a schoolboy cadet, standing proudly with my fully functioning WW11 303 rifle in the honor guard at the Young NSW dawn service.

At 16 I was the cadet officer taking the salute with the honor guard at that dawn parade. I have never been more proud.

A platoon would then lead the parade, & B platoon would push the wheel chairs. That there were so many men, representing so many branches of the defense force in a small country town was really amazing, & humbling.

My father never marched, or even attended. He never mentioned his war, so it was probably pretty bad. He did not have to talk about it, or march, for me to honor him along with all the others.

So o sung wu, I sure hope it is still valid for the Veterans, as it sure is for me.

Hi there SPQR...

In most of those celebratory occasions, like Christmas etc., that which we all hold so dear, I'd have to agree with you. But, do you really believe they'd dare touch, or alter ANZAC day ? Still, you never know do you, nothing is sacred these days I believe ? Let the buggers try, I'd say !

Hi there FOXY...

Yes it's very true what you say about your father-in-law, applies to many veterans, they never wish to speak of the war, or be reminded of the war either ? You can but wonder what horrors they'd faced, during their time ? Military life effects people in different ways I suppose ? I think it's absolutely marvellous many of the young people who are now engaging with their elderly kin, in moments of remembrance, as evidenced by the thousands of young people who accompany their elderly (veteran) kin, turn up for the dawn service.

G'day there REHCTUB...

How's life been treating you now Butch, well I hope ? Yes, you and many millions more, if they ever tried to do away with ANZAC Day ! But as you say, they may still try and have it either greatly modified, or cancelled altogether, because of some alleged lack of interest ? Who knows, the politically correct brigade may give it a go, in the years to come ?

Hi there HASBEEN...

You of all people ANZAC Day must evoke many mixed messages for you and yours ol' mate ? As a fourteen year old, marching along proudly with your serviceable SMLE must have been a real buzz for you eh ? Why did you choose the Navy (as an Aviator) rather than the RAAF pilot training scheme ?

Did you ever manage to speak with your Dad concerning his war service, even though he was not given to ever speak about it ? THe two major wars must have had an enormous and shocking impact upon those involved in it, as was your Dad ? You must have been very, very, proud of him, despite the fact it was never ever spoken of ? My dear father never served. He attempted to enlist in 1940, and was rejected on the grounds he was in an essential industry (farming). Still, he did his bit to the very best of his ability, nevertheless.

I must admit, at aged twelve, I was given the opportunity of firing a No.1 Mk 3 out at the old ANZAC Range, Liverpool. I must admit, as I picked it up and found the thing to be quite heavy I was beginning to have some real trepidation about firing it ! Apart from the incredibly loud 'report' (back in the early fifties, they never wore ear plugs or ear protectors), the recoil was very noticeable too, as it 'bucked' sharply back into the shoulder of those firing it. Anyway, I gave it a go, and as they say the rest is now history ?

Though I no longer associate with any of my old Company mates, I still feel pretty good as I see our old Regt. march past ! Each year the line of marchers, slowly thins out a little. Still,'time waits for no man' as they say eh. ! Thanks for your contribution too ol' friend.

o sung wu,
I will be marching in Sydney on Anzac Day.
I fly out of Mareeba (0400) in the morning in my trusty old 206, refuel at Rockhampton again at Caloundra then Coolangatta and Ballina and finally at Taree before landing at Bankstown.
Usually get in around 1900. Park the plane and arrange for service and fuel up and in bed by 2100.
I spend the next day seeing some old mates who won’t make it to the march and have formal dinner and reunion with my unit at the American Consulate (173 Airborne).
I march with the 2/20 battalion (Changi POWs) as an honor to my father, reunion at the Tatts Club, 2 up at the Australian Hotel in the Rocks (Irish pub) the fly to Mittagong and stay at our family pub (The George) in Picton.
The trip home is via Bathurst, Dubbo, Tamworth, Goondiwindi, Roma, Emerald, Longreach, Cloncurry, Mornington Island, Aurukun, Weipa, Murray Island, Lockhart River and back to Mareeba.
I see old battalion mates in all these places. Probably for the last time.
The old plane is a bit like me now. Hard to get up into the air.
I think its time for both of us to retire.
If they try to close down “The One Day of The Year” they can expect a dying fight from me I can assure you ol’ mate.
