<< My main point of this thread, is why do we need rego for a ride on, but not a push bike? >>

Rehctub, I think that’s rather obvious.

We don’t want unregistered powered vehicles using our roads, or footpaths, do we? But we do want to encourage people to get out of their cars on their bikes.

Why should bicycles be treated in the same way as ride-on lawnmowers, or golf buggies or mopeds or hovercrafts….. ?

Ok, it becomes a little less clear when we have bicycles with little electric or two-stroke motors on them.

But as for ride-on mowers; it is clear-cut to me – they much be registered if they are going to be driven down the street.

As for offloading one from trailer onto the road or footpath out the front of your house and then driving it three metres along the road or footpath and down your driveway; it might technically be illegal, but in reality are you ever likely to run up against the law for doing that? I doubt it very much.

"The art of taxation consists in so plucking the goose as to obtain the largest possible amount of feathers with the smallest possible amount of hissing" (J B Colbert)

Never fear, where there are incompetent, big-spending government governments as Anna Bligh's Labor government was in Queensland, more revenue raisers like the registration of bicycles are on the cards. Among other tax initiatives and sale of assets Anna Bligh did bring in registration of pussies. Cyclists can be similarly demonised and reasons found for State control with new taxes to apply of course. -Just saying that where there is a need for more money government will find an excuse.

Luddy how are people going to mow the road verge, or in more extreme cases, like some of my neighbors slash the things, if we are not allowed to ride the mower on them.

Mine is 340 yards long, & 15ft wide in some places. I can't walk 100 yards these days, let alone push a fool mower, even if I had one.

On the other hand push bikes are a dam sight worse than mowers, & cause more death & injury than guns ever did. They are nothing but a hindrance on the roads.

Come the revolution we will crush the lot of them, just like Howard did with those lovely guns.

But Haz, road verge is different to footpath. Of course we are allowed to mow our road verge, even though it is council property.

Everyone in my area does it, ‘cept my fool next-door neighbour who reckons it’s the council’s job. Consequently every wet season it becomes rank with tall grass and weeds. Then eventually the council comes along and slashes it!! ( :> /

If you get knocked down and injured by somebody in a motorised wheelchair in a shopping centre, who is responsible?

The Shopping Centre owner? Probably not - it wasn't their negligence that caused it. Their duty of care and public liabililty probably wouldn't go that far. Some even provide motorised scooters for their customers.

The wheelchair driver? Probably, but they wouldn't have any accident insurance because their vehicle is not registered.

That's why ride-on mowers are supposed to be registered.
