Onthe beach, you are right about mental health problems such as depression not getting enough of the public health dollar. It is a disgrace.

Especially in country areas, depression overtakes all other medical problems as the number one reason people seek help from their GP's, so why the Government and charity organizations don't throw more money at it is a mystery, and a sadness, to me.

Oneundergod you are not helping at all with this serious subject, with your strong anti-drug and paranoid anti-medical rantings.

Men's Sheds aren't for everyone, and certainly not for people like you.
But they have and do help many men (and their families too, indirectly), so YOU have no idea what you are talking about..

I hope O Sung Wu has the common sense not you read your rubbish.

Dear on the beach

That's probably a polite criticism of my post.

I stand by it, because
(a) it's a general paraphrase of what the pastoralist I mentioned says to others, and
(b) it's how I handle my own depression.

Yes, when you're in the depths feel good jargon can be a bit hard to take. But if it's what you say to yourself? Works for some, may help others. And I recognise that medical assessment and treatment is essential.

I am researching a man who was committed for lunacy in the 1880s and 20 years later successfully took court action (against his family) to get himself declared sane. By hindsight, it is clear he was suffering from depression. There were no privacy rules in those days and the court transcripts make salutary reading. A book one day.

I should add the historic case study is about a farmer who was affected by exactly the same problems farmers face today, 150 years later, which lead to the high suicide rate. It's a very serious issue.

Hi there Folks...

Thank you all for your supportive comments and remedies for discarding this bleakness that can swiftly envelop us without any sign or warning of it's impending presence. The very kind sentiments expressed often, and so voluminous from ONE UNDER GOD is truly gratifying for me ! And there's SUSEONLINE and HASBEEN, with their truly 'personal thoughts' and suggestions, both reflect the enormous fellowship and humanity of those, who regularly contribute to and support this Forum.

With the phenomenal consolation and positive concepts, expressed by ONTHEBEACH and COSSOMBY further illustrate the considerable kindness that emerges when anyone of us, seek to be fortified, or just wish for a quiet 'willing ear', will often console us when our mood feels 'dead black' and feels like it's just 'bumping along the bottom'.

I've noticed many of our more mature and older brethren, the likes of HASBEEN, SUSEONLINE and others, people who themselves, have had to battle their own demons, still spare time to extend a genuine hand to another.

Of course my old colleague and friend, ONE UNDER GOD, will ALWAYS prepare substantial and often, material advice without any thought of his own emotions, and his present mood ? His amazing access to the various 'links' he manages to source, is astonishing in itself ? And despite his various quarrels he's had with police, he has never let his antipathy or enmity towards them, colour his attitude or respect he's had towards me personally. That alone makes ONE UNDER GOD an extraordinary human being !

A piece of sound advice from COSSOMBY, that immediately prompted a furtive smile...he suggested I stop reading posts from grumpy old men on OLO ? I might remind COSSOMBY that I'm one of those 'grumpy old men' to whom he refers ?

You can see, there's some mighty nice people who frequent this Forum. And myself, I'm a distinct beneficiary of those 'mighty nice people' I believe, with the generous kindness that's been occasioned to me !
