As we pass through seventy years of age, some of us may ponder what life ahead will bring us ? With medical science as it is, most of us are lucky to be still in the 'vertical' ? When in reality, if we'd been born three or four centuries in times past, few of us in fact would've made fifty let alone seventy ?

Some of us also, 'enjoy' the sporadic companionship of the 'black dog' who selflessly follows us about, as we endure our days, and our nights. All the while we should, we must, conceal his ('blackies') existence, lest he infects others, as he has us, with his peculiar presence. And inevitably, transfers his odd influence and deleterious impact to other people, people we ourselves love and wish to shield.

So when we ultimately reach this nebulous point of our lives, seventy four or five years of age, we must then resolve whether or not to jump, or wait a little longer and be summoned ? Otherwise our continued presence amongst those of whom we harbour deep affection, might well be similarly 'infected' with this dreadful affliction this cursed, black dog freely passes around ?

Citizens rise against police brutality nationwide
By: NotForSale2NWO
http://intellihub.com/citizens-rise-police-brutality-nationwide/

It appears as though people finally have had enough. Following continuous police brutality, people are taking to the streets. It’s quite possible that the upcoming march and a rally against police brutality in Sacramento, CA, planned for October 22nd [1][2] and other protests nationwide [3][4] will serve more than just placing another brick in the wall against police brutality, but will also grow into a nationwide movement against police violence.

America’s Economic Enslavement by the Psychopathic Corporate Elite
http://rinf.com/alt-news/breaking-news/part-wolves-psycho-street-americas-economic-enslavement-psychopathic-corporate-elite/

Is it only me or is there something fundamentally flawed with the people who are running our government? This includes the thousands of policymakers, opinion leaders, oligarchs, autocrats and technocrats, the hundreds of thousands of bureaucrats and their loyal underlings, including millions within the corporatocracy who facilitate the maintenance of power.

Does it bother you that the Wall Street banks and major corporations, many of our academic and religious institutions as well as our medical, military and intelligence gathering complexes, have their needs met at the expense of everyone else?

6 States Where Fracking Earthquakes are a New Feature of Reality
http://www.wakingtimes.com/2014/03/05/frackquakes-every-state/

The movement against hydraulic gas fracturing, or ‘fracking,’ is becoming mainstream as this toxic and rapidly expanding technique by the oil and gas industry affects more and more everyday people. Essentially, fracking is the process of forcefully injecting different blends of chemicals, fresh water, gasses, sands or other materials underground into geologic layers of rock or coal formations, which then causes the underground formations to fracture, crack or break up, resulting in the recoverable release of oil and gas.

Dear O Sung Wu. No one should hide the presence of the 'black dog' these days, when there is help to be had to fight it. It is not a failing or weakness on anyone's part to admit they are sad, or having negative thoughts.

Medications and/or counselling/therapy are very effective if you are willing to try them.

Speak to your GP, and maybe the age of past 70 needn't be dogged by the horrible effects of depression.
With the advances in medicine these days you may well live past 90, so why live it with the effects of depression when you may find help to decrease or get rid of the symptoms?

Speak to your mates and you may well find you are far from alone in this fight, and that talking about it with others does help.

You talk about possible suicide as a solution, rather than 'burdening' your family and friends with the constant fight with depression symptoms.
The effect on them of a suicide of a loved one will be far more upsetting than any discussions or dealing with your depression.

In fact, a family member or friends sudden demise by unexpected suicide is a major cause for depression or even post traumatic stress disorder in itself.
So, people who commit suicide are unknowingly damning those close to them to a life of misery and guilt.

Far better to try and seek treatment, don't you think ?

All the best.
Suse.

I’m 15 years shy of 70. My father is 15 years past 70. He’s is fine physical and mental form. There is no doubt that I’ve got more of a black dog than he does.

O sung wu, I sympathise all the way. But we’re all different. Some of have the black dog chewing away all our lives, while others never see the mongrel at all.

BTW, my black dog would be considerably less significant if I didn’t have the constant burden of having the most disgusting opinion of our police, due to a whole series of interactions that I’ve had with them over many years, and to all the violations of the law that I see on our roads practically every day, which just go unpoliced!! And in that respect, also due to the manner in which the police have CUT THE PUBLIC OUT of the law-regulating picture when it comes to road safety. They have effectively shut down (if it was ever really open) the public's right and responsibility to report rank drivers and expect the police to follow through on complaints! They are enormously duplicitous in their official messages regarding road safety and in their actions!

I just couldn't be more disgusted by this.

I am a strong advocate for a good rule of law, of which a good policing regime is all-important. I want to be strong supporter of our police. But by crikey, they are just… generally speaking… incredibly ‘different’ to what they should be.

That has been powerful energy food for my black dog.

o sung wu I think we are similar people, but I have never experienced your black dog. To be honest I probably don't really understand what you or others are talking about. I wonder if anyone who has not experienced or lived with it can really know what it is.

Of course I have been depressed when things don't go right, but only until I had a plan to overcome the problem. So here comes some gratuitous advice, you are welcome to ignore.

I believe I have always been too busy for depression. I always had things I wanted to do, things that anyone on my income could not have afforded to do. To do them I had to learn how to do myself, things that others paid someone to do for them.

To go motor racing I had to be able to build racing engines & other bits, that were not only powerful, but stayed together. Then I had to find the time to do all the work, as well as earn the money to pay for it all. There were lots of us doing it on a shoestring, so there were many with knowledge & even parts to share. I spent 5 nights a week for years rebuilding racing cars.

When I wanted to go sailing I had to either build a yacht, [thousands have], or rebuild an old one. At least half the effort was learning what & how to do what was required. Again not much spare time to navel gaze, & become depressed at my slow progress.

Today I have 3 aging sports cars, 12, 20 & 34 years old. They along with my kids & an old horse, are the joy of my life. However keeping them mobile keeps me quite busy, particularly at my much slower work rate today.

Like you, walking is becoming difficult. I don't yet need a frame, but I could never do the supermarket round without a trolley to lean on. Getting up off the ground/floor can be very difficult. At least when working under a car, you can use the thing to pull yourself up on.

I have taken to using the ride on mower as a mobility scooter. Not only is it easier than getting into & out of a vehicle to go down the paddocks, I can use it around the house paddock. That way it is nearby to use to get up off the ground, when the damn knees won't work.

I don't know if any of this waffle can help, but I think having things on your mind can stop you thinking about yourself. I find being really busy, like having to get a car ready for a club event, is better than Panadol at relieving pain. You forget all about it, at least until you sit down with a cup of coffee.

I don't know if it would work with that black dog, but worth a try. Buy yourself an old Triumph TR7, they are cheap, it takes lots of work to keep one running, & the people who own them an incredibly helpful lot, when you need advice.

Oh, & good luck with it old mate.

o sung wu,
With sincere hope that you are more likely sad and lonely than chronically depressed. But I stand to be corrected. Not very pleasant feelings and depression can come and go. Sad too that a large proportion of seniors report loneliness and often lack of care from their families and from society too. Maybe a move to a residential facility with community activities? Hard to find a good one I believe.

Chronic depression
I always thought I knew something, maybe not a lot, but something about depression. That I remained in the dark about it despite study and reading over years has been brought home to me by sad experience, that of having someone I care for deeply suffering from it. Not someone elderly, young, but the same black dog.

Chemicals, counselling and 'taking your mind off it' have limits and may not work at all in a moderate case where the victim is not sleeping - but is desperate to sleep - and/or experiences severe difficulty in even arising at all. Everything is impossibly difficult. Depression is cruel, removing any will, any joy in being alive and any hope. It is not 'negative thinking'.

I do not know any better thing we can do but empathaise as best we can and just BE THERE for them. Being there means just that, caring and being present, without offering advice and often no 'entertaining' conversation. Distractions have no positive effect whatsoever ion some, or is that many?, cases.

The very hard thing to do is to keep on being there for them: say you care, make food and living a bit easier without comment and advice (always interpreted as a judgement against the sufferer), and stick it out for the long term. It is an illness. But there is no cure and medication and so on may have only limited effect, perhaps just a dulling effect.

Isn't it a pity that depression and mental illness do not have the same political correctness clout as breast cancer, where the donations are so overwhelming and persistent as to be an embarrassment? Where are ribbons worn for the depressed and what colour would they be? Not black I hope, because many families are already wearing black in memory of depressed loved ones, departed.

Poetry by sufferers helps to develop empathy.

Dear O Sung Wu

I don't underestimate the devastation of severe depression. You must seek professional help.

However, you have taken a positive step by sharing it publically. Hidden depression is a particular issue for men who are taught never to show weakness. But admitting such problems is actually strength. The bravest person I know is a pastoralist who, by speaking publically about his own battle with depression, became a support to other farmers worn down by years of drought. Just thinking about his honesty and courage makes me feel braver.

Don't think that by hiding it from your loved ones, or 'removing your presence' you would be doing them a favour. The reverse, you would be burdening them with sadness and guilt.

You're only 74-75 years old? And 2-300 years ago you wouldn't have lived this long? Well, isn't every extra year a gift?

Do something with this gift! For yourself: what do you really wish you had done in your life? Do it now!
For your family: Ask them what they would like? Think of something they would like but would never ask for. (Don't be too pushy)
For people you don't know: join an organisation to help others. Don't like any of them? Start your own or just do something yourself. Start with one secret act of kindness to a stranger each day.

Find an older role model. Mine is an amazing woman called Sarah Musgrave. In 1926, aged 96, she wrote a book on her memoirs; at 100 she revised and republished it. That's amazing enough but why I love her is this: at 98 she had a bit part in an early BW film partly based on her reminiscences, then she climbed a tree to get a better view of the filming. Her only complaint? The tree wasn't quite high enough to see everything.

So whenever I feel down, I think: If Sarah could climb that tree at 98, I have no excuse to sit round feeling sorry for myself.

PS. You should also stop reading the negative posts by grumpy old guys on OLO.

Onthe beach, you are right about mental health problems such as depression not getting enough of the public health dollar. It is a disgrace.

Especially in country areas, depression overtakes all other medical problems as the number one reason people seek help from their GP's, so why the Government and charity organizations don't throw more money at it is a mystery, and a sadness, to me.

Oneundergod you are not helping at all with this serious subject, with your strong anti-drug and paranoid anti-medical rantings.

Men's Sheds aren't for everyone, and certainly not for people like you.
But they have and do help many men (and their families too, indirectly), so YOU have no idea what you are talking about..

I hope O Sung Wu has the common sense not you read your rubbish.

Dear on the beach

That's probably a polite criticism of my post.

I stand by it, because
(a) it's a general paraphrase of what the pastoralist I mentioned says to others, and
(b) it's how I handle my own depression.

Yes, when you're in the depths feel good jargon can be a bit hard to take. But if it's what you say to yourself? Works for some, may help others. And I recognise that medical assessment and treatment is essential.

I am researching a man who was committed for lunacy in the 1880s and 20 years later successfully took court action (against his family) to get himself declared sane. By hindsight, it is clear he was suffering from depression. There were no privacy rules in those days and the court transcripts make salutary reading. A book one day.

I should add the historic case study is about a farmer who was affected by exactly the same problems farmers face today, 150 years later, which lead to the high suicide rate. It's a very serious issue.

Thank you all for your supportive comments and remedies for discarding this bleakness that can swiftly envelop us without any sign or warning of it's impending presence. The very kind sentiments expressed often, and so voluminous from ONE UNDER GOD is truly gratifying for me ! And there's SUSEONLINE and HASBEEN, with their truly 'personal thoughts' and suggestions, both reflect the enormous fellowship and humanity of those, who regularly contribute to and support this Forum.

With the phenomenal consolation and positive concepts, expressed by ONTHEBEACH and COSSOMBY further illustrate the considerable kindness that emerges when anyone of us, seek to be fortified, or just wish for a quiet 'willing ear', will often console us when our mood feels 'dead black' and feels like it's just 'bumping along the bottom'.

I've noticed many of our more mature and older brethren, the likes of HASBEEN, SUSEONLINE and others, people who themselves, have had to battle their own demons, still spare time to extend a genuine hand to another.

Of course my old colleague and friend, ONE UNDER GOD, will ALWAYS prepare substantial and often, material advice without any thought of his own emotions, and his present mood ? His amazing access to the various 'links' he manages to source, is astonishing in itself ? And despite his various quarrels he's had with police, he has never let his antipathy or enmity towards them, colour his attitude or respect he's had towards me personally. That alone makes ONE UNDER GOD an extraordinary human being !

A piece of sound advice from COSSOMBY, that immediately prompted a furtive smile...he suggested I stop reading posts from grumpy old men on OLO ? I might remind COSSOMBY that I'm one of those 'grumpy old men' to whom he refers ?

You can see, there's some mighty nice people who frequent this Forum. And myself, I'm a distinct beneficiary of those 'mighty nice people' I believe, with the generous kindness that's been occasioned to me !

Sorry to hear of your problems, o sung wu. To reach 70 plus, you're one tough son of a bitch. Remember it's not over till the fat lady sings, so kick that black dog in the guts so hard he ends up in her gob, that'll shut her up for quite a while I'd reckon.

Chin up old buddy and think not what you've done or where you've been, but what you can still do and where you can still go. Knocking some sense into the clowns around here is a good start :~)

Hi there HASBEEN...

An old TR7 you reckon ? Mate, I can barely close my hands around the handles of my walking frame, let alone fling around a set of 'Sidies' ! Oh sure I wish I could no doubt, there's something very therapeutic working on an old car, particularly old English cars and bikes. Sure, you're probably thinking, old Sung Wu is a founding subscriber to the hitherto 'youthful excuse factory'? Moreover, he's not got the guts to even give it a try ? There'd be some real sense to that statement !

I've heard of Men's Sheds and the terrific impact they've had on men of all ages and backgrounds. Since my illness, I've tended to shy away from social/vocational activities when those attending I don't know ? *You see HASBEEN, still more excuses*. Our kids are all grown, become successful, and moved on. Our grandkids give us immense joy, but none of them have any knowledge of my intimate relationship with, the 'black mongrel'. As our grandchildren were growing, and paid us numerous visit, that implore me by saying '...go grandpa can we see your gun...'? Of course those simple pleasures have now gone, and grandpa merely sits silently in his chair watching quietly all the eager activity take place around him, without seemingly to take part.

Dear o sung wu,

On September 30, 1859 Abraham Lincon related this in a speech;

“It is said an Eastern monarch once charged his wise men to invent him a sentence, to be ever in view, and which should be true and appropriate in all times and situations. They presented him the words: "And this, too, shall pass away." How much it expresses! How chastening in the hour of pride! How consoling in the depths of affliction!”

I thought this was a biblical expression however it seems its from a Sufi poet named Attar of Nishapur. “Attar records the fable of a powerful king who asks assembled wise men to create a ring that will make him happy when he is sad, and vice versa. After deliberation the sages hand him a simple ring with the words "This too will pass" etched on it, which has the desired effect."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/This_too_shall_pass

Whatever the origin the sentiment has comforted me on more than one occasion.

Interesting to hear you are staring down 75 years of age. I'm a bit off that myself but had always felt this was the age to start experimenting with drugs. I mean the body is pretty well shot and the mind is chocker full of life's experiences so trips of a different kind seem to be on the cards.

I recently had a discussion with a couple of old hippie types who say their relationship with LSD is totally life affirming. Using it in their 20's was not always pleasant in fact on occasion it was terrifying but now they say they are having extraordinarily profound experiences. Just the looks on their faces when they describe how it transports them to places of deep understanding tells me there is something worth exploring here.

From my reading LSD in non-toxic, non-addictive, and shown to be beneficial to metal health.

However it will be quite a few years before I embark on that journey as 75 is the age I have set myself. But what about you, would you ever contemplate kicking the traces in that direction a little?

...Sorry HASBEEN, I hit the wrong button, I'd not checked anything I'd written, therefore there'll be an abundant number of mistakes, for which I apologise ?

Actually, what I was trying to say, you said yourself; your children and grandchildren (and horse), were your life ! I couldn't agree with you more. I too am similarly blessed in this regard. As I look beyond seventy five though, I wonder if there's any point in planning any further ? What does the good book ordain, something to the effect...that men shall live but, 'three score and ten'...? If this edict is correct, then my life's now in deficit ?

I'm at that point now, where I should perhaps dwell on what has past. Rather than, what is there to plan for the future ?

Good on you HASBEEN, for all your sage advice. I appreciate it.

G'day there ONTHEBEACH...

Thank you for your thoughtful comments and insight, and I agree totally with what you've said. Depression, is a disorder that generally can't be seen, like most other illnesses, therefore it's least understood, notwithstanding there are millions of sufferers around the world who are afflicted with it.

Myself, I used to attend weekly group counselling sessions at the VVCS (Vietnam Veterans Counselling Services) and I found this pretty good. Though it was Veteran specific, we all had different worries, different problems, some with family difficulties, some vocationally, but we're all quite different. There was eight of us sitting in a little circle, talking about how the previous week had been for us, and what expectations we had, for the following week ?

Most, found this process pretty good, without the need to see a bunch of Doctors and take tablets. I went along for over eighteen months, and only ceased, because some of the group wanted to talk about the damn war all the time, and that became quite tedious to be honest with you, therefore I gave it away, about two years ago now.

Many thanks ONTHEBEACH, I appreciate your willing 'ear' and your excellent, kindly advice.

Dear o sung wu,

You mentioned thinking on the past, and that's quite a reasonable idea, as one of the key things we have going for us is the 'grey matter', and sharing our past experiences can help to keep us 'young'.
An old friend of mine (now 81), with whom I have shared a love of target rifle shooting for many years, has embarked on recording his 'memoirs' and on expressing his thoughts about global warming, farming and food security (as we are also cattle graziers, or past cattle graziers) and even on the possible long term prospects for humanity.
His 'musings' make for very interesting reading, and I look forward to receiving his emails; and we often have chats about global affairs when we meet at the local rifle club. It all makes for keeping life interesting, and keeping the blood flowing.

I'm sure your experiences and thoughts would also make interesting reading for your family and friends, and particularly for the grand-kids, just as your writings on this forum are always interesting and informative.
Any mobility limitations may hinder prospects for some 'new ventures' (like restoring a vintage vehicle, or building furniture for needy families at a Men's Shed), but, as long as you can keep the brain active, your recollections and your imagination can 'give you wings'.

More power to you, and keep up the good work.

Documenting an oral history is a possibility. The right software helps when the fingers are not always cooperative. The National Library is interested.

It is a talking point too and can bring others into your life.

Hi there - Much of what you've all said makes good sense, COSSOMBY, SALTPETRE and RAW MUSTARD all of you bring considerable experience of life issues, together with immense wisdom to 'the table', so to speak. My dear wife says, 'pull yourself together' and look at the brighter side...of course she's correct and I should pull myself together, I suppose ?

A piece written by the Welsh poet, Dylan THOMAS has always struck me as a rhyme or verse which kicks, dying, or the prospect of impending death, squarely in the face. The first verse goes thus...

'Do not go gentle into that good night',
'Old age should burn and rave at close of day',
'Rage, Rage against the dying of the light'...

There's another five or six verses to it ?

It's thought young Dylan THOMAS wrote this poem for his dying father, at the age of only sixteen years ? To me though, it evokes great resistance to the prospect of dying before your time ? Of course I'm probably quite wrong, still it's a poem that's been around for some years and it's been venerated and revered by many men within the veteran community. To me personally, I should at the very least...'Rage, Rage against the dying of the light'...?
But why ?

o sung wu,

"But why?"

Two words which speak volumes.

Here's something Ivan Illich wrote about our disconnected "modern" society, which might hold a clue to why you feel the need to ask that question.

"Traditional society was more like a set of concentric circles of meaningful structures, while modern man must learn how to find meaning in many structures to which he is only marginally related. In the village, language and architecture and work and religion and family customs were consistent with one one another, mutually explanatory and reinforcing. To grow into one implied a growth into others..."

So when you ask "why", it seems that life is devoid of meaning - and when life appears devoid of meaning, it appears empty...always a tragedy, for there is nothing more important to life than to perceive "meaning".

Hope you find your meaning, o sung wu.

Hi STEELEREDUX...

That's a side of you that I wasn't aware existed ? The proposition of 'trialling' or experimenting with some of these hallucinogenic substances in my advanced dotage, is something I've never actually considered ? '...and this too shall pass away...' The notion of manic happiness, as opposed to that of the deepest depression ? 'And this too shall pass away' ? STEELEREDUX I can see clearly why such a line can bring extraordinary solace or comfort ! Thank you very much indeed, for sharing this line of infinite wisdom.

Hi (again) RAW MUSTARD, SALTPETRE and ONTHEBEACH...

Your combined wisdom, further encourages me to look more carefully into much of what you've said; all three of you !

Your timely suggestion RAW MUSTARD, of giving this 'black mongrel' a decent kicking, has spurred me on with great vigour ! The thought of exacting such violence upon a mere canine is somewhat repulsive, nevertheless, it's either me or him ?

And SALTPETRE kindly suggests the smell of 'black powder' can clear one's mind ? You know, I've never actually shot a black powder programme. Friends of mine who have, reckon you'd never get 'em back to high velocity smokeless stuff ! Apparently, many of the European gunsmiths, construct some magnificent Black Powder weapons, both shoulder and hand guns. Very similar to that which has been used, a century and a half, ago ? An exciting shooting discipline for sure.

ONTHEBEACH has thoughtfully suggested, a process run by the National Library where one can transcribe your life history so others may have a deeper more substantial understanding of your life ? The only guarantees I can give there ONTHEBEACH, is my life story would have an amazing analgesic or narcotic effect, on all who had the misfortune of reading it, I should think ? A great idea, if my life was a little less banal, I should think. An interesting suggestion nevertheless, and I thank you very much indeed.

o sung wu,

That poet is not on about denying or opposing or fighting death or denying the Dark Reaper. He says enjoy life. Live. Wring everything out of life.

He would say drink you tea slowly and savour it. Look again at what is around you. Measure the works of Nature. See the sun rise and actually look. Hear again as though you never have before what those around you are saying. The sun rise is never far away.

We do what we can do and what we have done so far in life is enough for what has passed.

Anyhow, keep on truckin'. I have had a call and need to give a relative a hand. Funny to say that because he has a badly inflamed elbow. We men do tend to soldier on. Still, that should be what you do in your circumstance.

Dear o sung wu,

I'm not sure I have pointed to 'infinite wisdom' (though if infinity means something without end then I suppose a ring is just that) but if it was of value then I am glad. It has been for me.

The Black Dog has taken the odd chunk out of my hide but not as painful as the literal chunk removed by an Alsatian at a drug dealer's house a few years back. That is a story for another time and I mention it purely as a segue to our other discussion. Though it must be said I personally have not ingested anything illegal since my early twenties when some weed laced with horse tranquilliser sent me places that were not pleasant.

It is just that LSD seems to be a gateway for some forms of wisdom.

“Francis Crick, the Nobel Prize-winning father of modern genetics, was under the influence of LSD when he first deduced the double-helix structure of DNA nearly 50 years ago.”
http://www.hallucinogens.com/lsd/francis-crick.html

Even Moses;

“Professor Shanon says the acacia tree, frequently mentioned in the Bible, contains one of the most psychedelic substances known to man. The professor, who came up with his theory after experiencing firsthand the effects of a hallucinogenic brew used in religious rituals in Brazil, said the story of Moses and the burning bush also had the hallmarks of a psychedelic experience.”
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-525993/Moses-high-hallucinogenic-drug-received-Ten-Commandments-claims-academic.html#ixzz2vNhRf6T3

I'd imagine the street smarts you would have gained as an officer would possibly allow you to source some of this interesting chemical.

It is said the broader your life experiences the more expansive your reaction to the drug. I have little doubt yours would furnish a very broad canvas indeed.

Well hello there POIROT...

What a nice surprise to hear from you, as I've always believed you to be one of the most astute and truly sagacious contributors we have in this Forum of ours (and Graham's).

Thank you so much to take the time to write, I appreciate it very much indeed.

'Meaning', when I was still at work, I think the concept or quality of 'meaning' was somewhat more apparent. Without engendering some hackneyed simplification like; '...looking after, and protecting the community at large...' without beating our collective chests, I occasionally thought we did do a good job, or we stopped that from happening ? But in reality, that's what we're paid for ? So those thoughts are very quickly nullified I'm afraid ?

Probably a somewhat positive 'meaning' might be our family ? Where there's been some substantial successes with our family I would say ? So that in itself gives some definite 'meaning' I would say POIROT ? You've provided me with some absorbing and provoking notions and aspirations, upon which to ponder ? Therefore, I must again thank you with all the 'meaning' I can muster POIROT ? It is sincerely meant, please believe me ?

G'day there ONTHEBEACH...

I'd have to substantiate, you'd be one of the most 'positive' or optimistic individuals I've had the pleasure to encounter, either on OLO or the Forum, ONTHEBEACH !

Having just read you latest thread, and while suppressing a brief chuckle, I've got to tell you, I went to the orthopaedic bloke last Tuesday week about my right knee which is stuffed, needs a 'knee replacement' but he reckons I'm considered to be a poor anaesthetic risk ? He's a pretty bright, jovial sort of a fella, and he said, besides having regular physio, I should try and lose a little weight, and other than that, 'just soldier on' ! As you quite succinctly put it '...we men do tend to soldier on...'! Brilliant ! Truly, laughter is certainly the best medicine !

Thank a lot ONTHEBEACH, you're a beauty !

Dear o sung wu,

What I take from the line "Rage, Rage against the dying of the light", is to do what we can to maintain mental acuity, to be aware that our life, however banal or menial, HAS HAD meaning - and continues to have meaning, particularly to those closest to us.
Physically, we can only do that which is within our capability, and, even in this, small acts can give us both pleasure and meaning - and keep the neurons 'exercised', and by so doing, keep the creep of Alzheimers or dementia at bay.
(If my fingers become incapable of operating a keyboard, I will seek software enabling me to create text from the vocalization of my thoughts. To me, communication is the key to overcoming, to contributing, to maintaining 'meaning'.)
How I wish I had listened much more to my mother and father, to gain a deeper understanding of their life stories - before it was too late. A much-regretted missed opportunity.

One can also take heart from the life of Stephen Hawking, who, although severely disabled, continues to make a contribution to science, to knowledge, and, through his revelations, to our rather more quiet and unspectacular lives.

On rifle shooting, I have never worked with black powder, but don't feel I have missed out. For me, the challenge has been to select a rifle capable of fine (but not necessarily extraordinary) performance, and to craft ammunition which could achieve the most accurate performance of which the firearm and myself would be capable. It is then up to me to coax out that performance, from the 'rig' and the 'nut behind the butt'.

As for drugs, a nice wine shared with friends is my elixir of youth. I have no need of any other, and prefer to get my 'buzz' out of life itself, good music, good movies, good conversation, and an abiding interest in the wonders of nature (and concern for its preservation).

All the best to you, o sung wu; your thoughts are just as important as any others, and we appreciate your sharing.

o sung wu,
In the job mate you went to work every day with a sense of expectation and a view to achievement.
You never knew what to expect but you expected it anyway and at the end of the day you went home knowing you had achieved something positive.
That sense of achievement remains with us every day and we still wake up with expectations.
The Black Dog is just like Satan who was told the "Get thee behind me"
So be it.

'evening to you SALTPETRE...

Firearms are rather curious 'tools' for me. Hunting is out of the question, as I tend to view hunting as the only sport where your competition doesn't know they're playing ? What I do like (should read admire) about firearms is the exacting engineering associated with quality guns. Generally speaking, that is something which falls within the sole purview of the European gun makers ? The Germans, Austrians, Belgians, the Finns, together with some others over there.

There's certainly nothing wrong with anything the Americans manufacture, but for fine engineering, and tight tolerances, it's the Europeans for me.

For police, you need a sidearm which is basically 'copper' proof or more correctly constable proof. That's why S & W have been a favourite for Oz coppers for years. Namely the Mod 10-3 loaded with 125gr or 115gr Hollow points to be precise for NSW. Now of course, NSW have gone across to Herr Glock's Austrian product (Mod's 17, 19, & 26) but I believe the Victorians went for a S & W in a 9mm Self Loader.

The essential difference between a six shot revolver, and a Glock 17 semi-automatic pistol, with a magazine holding 17 rounds ?

With a revolver, you can only miss your target six times ?
With a Glock 17, you can miss your target, 17 times ?

I'm very sorry SALTPETRE, 'I'm running off at the mouth' and quite off Topic ? Though, I do enjoy discussing this subject...Ironically titled 'ballistic masturbation'?

Thank you for your very kind words of support, I do appreciate it very much.

ONTHEBEACH...

No more Chinese tucker, that's OK. But a 'comely' physio ? At my age, do you wish me a heart attack ! Thanks mate, I do appreciate it.

Hi there CHRISGAFF1000...

In my early days of service I'd quite agree with you. You did your shift with no particular expectation of what that shift would bring, but depending on the hour of the day, the day itself, and your patrol sector, there was ALWAYS this negative expectation 'the mud would hit the fan' sooner rather than later !

An eventful shift did bring some measure of compliments, usually from the patrol sergeant even the duty regional inspector, if he had a mind to stick his head up ? Did those positive accolades ever hit your personal file...rarely if ever ! I will admit as a detective, positive remarks did end-up on the super's desk, more regularly than when you're in uniform.

I don't know Chris after doing 32 + years, I have no enduring memory of any one event where I was pleased to be in the job ? Sure, locking up crooks did have a pleasing side to it, though having been described on one occasion, as a 'management problem', I do wonder if it was worth it all at the time ? Sure it put bread and butter on the table, paid the rent, a reasonable pension and then what ...?

Tell me honestly, would you ever sit down with a good mate, who was never in the job, look him straight in the eye, and tell him honestly, you were proud to wear the uniform ?

Thanks for taking an interest Chris.

Wow o sung wu, that is something to be really proud of.

I never ever made it to anything like the status of "management problem", I envy you.

'evening to you STEELEREDUX...

I've no doubt that lysergic acid has produced some stunning trips, trips so 'out of this world' the recipient might think he could fly ?
I've read the US Army have tried testing some of their specialised intelligence people back in 1944, with LSD and found alarmingly, they couldn't control them ?

Sorry STEELEREDUX, I'm just not adventurous enough to take that big step and start experimenting with the likes of lysergic acid or their kind ? In fact I recently heard a programme on Radio National about some men living in New York State, all quite academically gifted, and they've managed to successfully, take several quite astounding trips, with the aid of LSD, in order to become much, much, closer to Jesus Christ, and even God ?

One of the group, who sounded quite elderly and very intelligent, said their experience was greatly improved and enhanced by the taking of the drug, giving them tremendous insight into the spiritual aspects of Christianity. Well, good for them. Personally, I'd much rather remain simple, banal, and awfully dull. Then to take a well known drug that will artificially enhance my personality and insight by chemical means.

There again, to each his own I suppose ? Thanks again STEELREDUX for your perspective insight into this Depression business, as always I do appreciate and value your thoughtful input.

I don't 'do' illegal drugs, not my speed, pardon the pun. The odd alcoholic drink, but I wouldn't go through the equivalent of twenty standard drinks a year. Not opposed to alcohol, just too busy doing things.

However, I believe that seniors 60+ should be allowed to consume marijuana, and that means growing up to six plants and holding 30grams for private use. Age has its pains and pharmaceuticals are drugs anyhow, have side-effects, and are expensive. Home grown 'grass' would be cheap and convenient.

Again, 'MJ' is not my thing but I meet many elderly through voluntary work for whom I am sure a reefer or two a day would be a blessed relief. Their families don't care about them and nor does government generally, so get out of their independent lives and give them some peace. Of course if the interfering Nanny State ever did allow them to use it (highly unlikely), it would have to be dispensed as 'medical marijuana'. What a complete crock that is!

< I believe that seniors 60+ should be allowed to consume marijuana, and that means growing up to six plants and holding 30grams for private use. >

I suffered from debilitating Arthritis. It was a real pain in the everywhere, until I smoked my first joint. One choof a night is enough to kick "my black dog" out of sight and give me the peace I need to do all the things I love. Why is it banned? <Shakes Head>

Worth considering o sung wu, it's not as evil as many would have you believe! You'd be breaking the law, but I figured my sanity was more important to me than following some rule morons in .gov think is for my own good and who probably use it themselves!

I am very anti drugs, legal & illegal, if you can possibly avoid them. My doctor has convinced me I have to take a couple because of my heart attacks, but I'm not too sure they aren't causing my other problems. Guess I'm too gutless to stop them to find out.

As for hallucinogens, I am very much against them. I don't have all that much experience of them, but I have seen a couple of very competent, capable people reduced to giggling idiots by them.

I have watched a couple of mates gaze vacantly into space, seeing I have no idea what, as their whole life collapsed around them.

As for highs, I have never had any trouble finding them in a dozen activities. I can't believe any chemical can be as high inducing as chasing a steer on a good horse, or thundering across the top of Bathurst's Mount Panorama in a quick car.

However if you are already beyond being able to do these things for yourself, I guess they may help. If they do, I can see no reason for the choice to use them to be anyone else's business but the users.

Hasbeen,

Ordinarily I might agree with you. See this though:

Perhaps the elderly deserve some choice.

To add.

Not keen on chemicals myself is what I was trying to say. I recognise you would give them choice too, rather than have some interfering bureaucrat decide for them. There are far too many bureaucrats interfering in private lives. An inheritance of years of Labor.

Hi there RAWMUSTARD...

Without resorting to being the 'goody two shoes' ol' copper, I personally can't see any problem at all, with allowing adults afflicted with chronic pain, to partake in Marijuana ? Further, I believe it should be grown, harvested and refined, by government licenced farmers, similar to that of the controlled growing of the opium poppy, in Tasmania. The essential ingredient for the manufacture of Morphine Sulphate, or Morphine Hydrochloride.

It's my understanding, Australia supplies a fifth of the world's Morphine requirements in any one year.

However, back to Marijuana. By the carefully regulated cultivation of the genus, Cannabis sativa plant (the plant from which comes 'hemp' for the mfg.of rope), strict quality control can be achieved. Thus the user can have every confidence in the actual strength and quality of what he's using. Surely this has to be the way to go ?

As you are also aware RAWMUSTARD, Marijuana is just a single component to it all - Indian Hemp, cannabis oil, hash oil, the extra strong cannabis resin (hashish), all come from the cannabis sativa plant. All of which can be smoked sniffed or ingested.

Sorry old mate, I'm boring you with this superfluous stuff ? In any event, the above position is my opinion, and if the process was followed carefully, the drug could then become decriminalised once and for all, and become economically attractive for everybody, keeping the filthy crooks right out of the equation !

I might also add, most detectives that I've known, would agree with me, in relation to Cannabis sativa, I feel quite sure of that ?

G'day there HASBEEN...

In my previous area of work, to be described by a boss as a 'management problem' is being likened to a real pain in the arse ? No accolades there at all I'm afraid.

Your hard and fast resistance to any sort of drug therapy is likely to be a throw back to your initial days in Naval Aviation ? Once out of the Navy, your obvious progression into motor sports, rallying and racing, further usurped any notion or desire to engage in any drug taking, lest it impaired your reflexes. Same with your dedicated equestrian activities, you couldn't permit yourself to be under any sort of drug induced euphoria, with sports that required lightening reflexes, or sound, split-second judgements ? Particular, with the care of a horse, squarely within your purview.

You yourself, just a moment ago, railed against taking your 'necessary' heart medication, but sheepishly admitted you were too scared to stop ? That's not an admission to fear or cowardice my friend, that speaks loudly and clearly of your devotion to your family (and 1 x horse), together with an assemblage of TR7's in varying degrees of completion !

I reckon HASBEEN, you love life far too much to risk mucking it up in some needless way. Further, I also reckon life loves you, equally !

o sung wu,
There was nothing more disheartening, though you couldn't show it, than writing up a PRU that was about to destroy the career prospects of some cadet bank clerk or junior manager in a small business just because he had a couple of joints in his possession in a random club search or index pullover.
All you could do was tell the beak he cooperated to the fullness and hope he walked.
The present system stinks.
If they want to cut the drug trade out they can by simply introducing a "Star Chamber" solution.
You pick up the user and the "Chamber" asks him where he got it. If he refuses to talk that then becomes contempt and he sits in the cell until he talks.
When he does talk you pick up that person and go through the same routine...All the way to the top.
Otherwise legalize the stuff.

Good evening to you CHRISGAFF1000...

You speak with some considerable experience of your appearances before the beaks ? You employ the word 'disheartening' ? Indeed it's disheartening alright, when you put in hours on a pretty good brief, and the Magistrate finds all offences proven but cuts him loose on a 356a, because he lacked toys when he was young ? Yup that's sure disheartening alright.

Indeed a simple process, that may well work ? Still and all you've failed to recognise the relative egos of the Chris Murphy's of the world, as they laboriously ply their trade around the musty corridors and cellular area of the hitherto, 'Court of Petty Sessions'. How on earth can you expect the august legal profession to cede away, their considerable influence, to such an imaginative proposal ? Without first, seeking their imprimatur ?

Justice must be seen to be done, not simply done ? Police cannot be trusted to dispense justice without the academic guidance of those who practice at the bar ? Your last sentence had some real resonance for me '...just legalize the stuff...' perhaps that may be the only real resolution, to this inscrutable problem Chris ?

Thank you for your contribution, I do appreciate it.

Don't chuck Chris Murphy my way brother.
I remember him when he had a little crap box for an office right opposite Redfern police station.
He used to hang out in the magistrate courts for the crims that might have proceeds of crime money and then he'd front for them.
He used to drink with the court royals and pander to them at the race track.
Him in Sydney, Tony Bellanto in Melbourne and Chris Nyst in Brisbane all cut from the same dirty cloth all swimming in crim money.
They invented the cash roller coaster and called it "Straw Bail" and if it went wrong threw the ball back in the local Jacks" court.
Legalization is not all that hard after all they virtually decriminalized IV drug usage by making syringes freely available under the guise of anti aids campaigning.

Hi CHRISGAFF1000...

You would've seen your share of the filth practicing and plying their corrupt trade in your former employ ? I watched the great man perform when he took 'buckets' Rex Jackson under his jurisprudence cloak, before the poor ol' bastard got 5 with a 2 years NP, for 'Perverting the Course of Justice' amongst other things, when he was the Minister for Corrective Services.

You wouldn't believe it, they actually put the poor ol' coot on 'four wheels' with the rest of the ne'er do wells, for his initial trip out to the Bay ? Usually, anyone of notoriety, was generally transported 'one out' particular those on 'protection' and in police custody ?

In my previous response to you Chris, I quoted a section S.356A Crimes Act 1900 - 'Offence proven, not proceed to convict' ? I dunno mate, my memory is so poor...I think it's 556A of the same Act ?

Hillman Imp ah ? A 'Rootes' vehicle, terrific little car, so you raced it at Bathurst, would've been great hurtling around such a fantastic circuit in such a great little car ? In those times, you would've raced at Katoomba too, another very demanding circuit ? I can't for the life of me recall the name of the track at Katoomba ?

The only time 'EVER' I attended Bathurst, was with the TRG, when the Bike races were held there and they rioted, helluva lot of damage occasioned, both to 'the Mountain' and it's environs, at that little do !

o sung wu,
556A is the one ol' mate.
We used to sort out the sentences in the pub with Murray Farquhar OBE before court.
Neville Wran should have been the one that got locked up.
I got his bag man, a debarred solicitor named Malcolm Johns on a conspiracy to murder and finished up with the chief witness against him, his ex girlfriend, as a concubine.
He used to ponce around in a white Rolls Royce collecting Wran's paper bags full of cash.
I busted Wran's daughter Jules for a kilo of hash but the evidence disappeared from the property room over night at North Sydney. She beat it.
It was a good form of justice only the damn prison used to send wish lists of professions to the courts also and some poor stiff who would have walked wound up getting three months because they needed a cook at Silverwater for the toffs cont..

o sung wu,
You know mate the only thing Rex did wrong was be an everybodies man. He was the member for the South Coast and every morning in the train up to Sydney he had an impromptu office in the carriage where anyone with a problem could talk to him. We bused to get him out of the nick on weekend leave and have a great time over a beer and discussions about corruption in government. They hounded him to the grave.
Catalina Park and what a bugger of a track. Locals knew it well.
I can remember hooting down Parramatta Road at 100MPH in a hotted up Vauxhall Vagabond with the coppers trying to catch me in a Holden.
And I still managed to get into 'the job'
Next time, take it easy

Yep Catalina. I absolutely loved it, even when it rained, which was more often than not.

I actually took second in the 67 NSW road racing championship, in the pouring rain, in my little 1100cc pushrod Brabham, against 1500cc twin cam Cosworth Brabhams & Lotus.

Even had to coast from Craven A, at the top of the circuit to the finishing line on the last lap, when second gear stripped teeth in the transaxle.

Like Bathurst, it was a very unforgiving place that bit very hard if you made a mistake. It was easy to beat a lot of drivers there, who were quite quick on the forgiving wide open spaces of Oran Park.

Yes o sung wu, the Imp was a great little car, but they didn't actually hurtle in stock "Bathurst" trim. 750cc or was it 775, was not very much to pull the thing up that hill, in fact it was not that much to get them around a corner, even though they did handle beautifully.

For example, Hell corner, from Pit straight into Mountain straight was a bit up hill. The Imp would get up to 60 MPH along Pit straight, & could turn in still at full throttle, & hold full throttle right through the corner. However the drag of the tyres turning the car was so great that the cars speed was reduced to 40 MPH by the exit.

In fact we only used the brakes 3 times in the lap, into the Dipper, Forrest Elbow & Murrays corner, at the bottom of Conrod. Otherwise it was foot to the floor all the way.

Unlike you Chris, I was a very law abiding citizen. I only got booked for things like failure to indicate intentions. I did not need to speed in town, when it was still legal to cruise across Liverpool Heathcote road, or down the Wallacia road at 100 MPH, if your car could do it. Of course motor racing was much more fun when you didn't need a multimillion dollar budget, just to drive around in a sedan.

I am well aware of the criticism..that will follow this article and truthfully,.I could care less. S..ince beginning broadcasting seven years ago,..I have heard allegations wondering where I came from and am I government troll and why did I just suddenly appear from nowhere?

Annie DeRiso tells me that people..ask her that question a lot. I have been awake for a very long time and I grow weary of the satanic evil that inhabits this planet..along with the lack of intelligence and courage..displayed by the masses.

What I do know is that this coming war..is not needed and many of our kids are going to die. I am damn sure..that the intelligence agencies knows how those 239 airline passengers died...You see, it is all a game that works..because we choose to remain ignorant of the truth.

It was time..to get mad about the state of the world..a long time ago.[1995][A good time would have been..when Jesus drove the money changers from the Temple.]

Hi there ONE UNDER GOD...

Johan, I really don't understand what it is you're warning us about ? I've read the link you've kindly provided us, and I still don't appreciate exactly what it is, that it attempts to convey, other than much 'doom and gloom' ?

Sure the world is stuffed, Australia will be stuffed if we don't do something about our burgeoning debt, law and order, and the rising unemployment that is badly hurting our younger people. But there's still a flicker of hope here and there, that may give us all the necessary strength to do something positive, in which we can all hold on too and remain positive ?

Sure, there's much that needs to be done, all around this ol' planet. Still, we need to start somewhere otherwise if we just sit and worry, without ever lifting a finger in an attempt to change for the better...well, we'll never have a positive future in which we should attempt to 'energise' sufficiently, for the benefit of our kids and grandkids ?

Gee Johan, I don't have any answers. In fact you have infinitely more remedies and solutions available to you ? Answers that will probably correct and overcome the deleterious effects of the protracted apathy, that currently exists in this country ?

I don't know what else I can say or offer you my friend, as some kind of affirmative response that conceivably may inspire in you, some form of enthusiasm. Hopefully for a much brighter more satisfying destiny for us all ?

Dear o sung wu,

Much of UOG's last post was a cut and paste from the link he provided.

Both David Hodges and OUG should take note of the following;

“There is, of course, something deeply troubling about cognitive dissonance, since it suggests that we double-down on our beliefs in light of conflicting evidence. While neuroscientists have begun to decipher the anatomy of this mental flaw – you can blame your anterior cingulate cortex – I sometimes worry that the internet is making things worse. Although we’re all vulnerable to cognitive dissonance (and the paranoid style has always been a loud presence in American politics) we seem to squander ever more oxygen on worthless conversations about Obama’s birth certificate and the North American Union. After all, thanks to Google we can find “evidence” in support of practically any belief. If you can imagine the conspiracy theory, there is a website out there ardently promoting it, and a clan of fellow believers who share your peculiar obsession with fluoridated drinking water and the New World Order. The end result is that we never have to recant. We can always find another link to “prove” that the government is trying to “zombify” us, or that aliens are going to destroy the earth at midnight.”
http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2010/08/the-psychology-of-conspiracy-theories/

In truth who is normal? It sure as hell ain't me, but if excessive unfounded fears are impacting heavily on a person's life then a gesture like yours toward OUG is timely.

However one has to be careful compounding those fears. The world isn't really stuffed at all. The number of people who have been pulled out of dire poverty and starvation over the last 25 years is absolutely astounding and we have managed to curb wholesale slaughter for the last 50 years which may well be a record for the human race. These are damn blessed times and we should be celebrating them even if sometimes we feel the opposite.

As a little aside I came across this little clip in my travels and thought you might find it interesting;

o sung wu,

Australia is not too stuffed that you can't take some cooked chook, a crust of bread and a thermos of coffee to a park to enjoy the Autumn sun and maybe some conversation too.

Leave there before 3.00 pm on weekdays when the mothers with their Maccas-fed kids arrive. For there are attention-seeking hysterics among them who would believe that any man and particularly a senior gent who is in a public place without a 'wonderful' woman to control him should be regarded with the utmost suspicion.

Hmmm, maybe Oz is partly-stuffed after all.

However the great majority of people are positive, caring and optimistic. So by all means do that that black dog for a walk some days.

i would try..to make this..its OWN TOPIC
BUT*..

The main claims of stabilization theory,..which distinguish it from neo-Darwinian theory, can be summarized as follows:

1. The typical form treated as a species comes into being via certain well-known, well-documented genetic processes ("stabilization processes")..that produce new stable forms in an extremely rapid manner; http://www.macroevolution.net/stabilization-processes.html
2. These processes produce new forms that are, for genetic reasons, inherently stable from the time of their inception right up to the time of their extinction. A corollary of this claim is the theory's assertion that any given type of organism produced by such a process has a negligible tendency to change over time in response to environmental constraints.

Darwin's picture of evolution
http://www.macroevolution.net/images/darwins-picture-of-evolution-250.jpg
(From The Origin of Species)

These primary tenets of stabilization theory can be contrasted with the following salient claims of neo-Darwinian theory:

1. The typical new form treated as a distinct species comes into being gradually through the accumulation of certain characteristic traits within an evolving population over time;
2. The accumulation and spread of these traits is due to environmental influences favoring the survival and reproduction of individuals having such traits (natural selection).

Only a few words of difference, but the implications are huge. Consider how extensively Darwinian theory has influenced not only biology, but also society at large and you will see that the stakes here are incredibly high — what if the axioms of Darwin's theory actually are erroneous? — and subsequent discussion will provide excellent reasons for believing they actually are — Then the theory itself is wrong and the entire Weltanschauung based upon it is mistaken. For example, under stabilization theory we select and shape our environment. The neo-Darwinian outlook, of course, is just the opposite: Under that view, the environment selects and shapes us.

As we shall see, the relative merits of these two hypotheses can in fact be evaluated by considering which of the two is more consistent with available data. But first, let's look at some examples of stabilization processes.

G'day there ONTHEBEACH...

My wife and I go for a walk (a short walk) occasionally in the park, avoiding where possible those ladies with children stuffing themselves with Maccas products ? Often without ever seeing a football or a cricket bat, or any other instrument necessary for the active participation in a sport ?

I suppose any reference I've made, apropos the world and this country being 'stuffed', should've been viewed, figuratively or allegorically, rather then that of substantive fact !

The appearance of the ol' black canine, comes and goes without any forewarning or announcement. Still, we all have a our crosses to bare, and I shall continue to bare mine, in silence !

Thanks for your response ONTHEBEACH, I very much appreciate it.

And afternoon to you to STEELEREDUX...

Regrettably, I'm neither skilled nor sufficiently adroit, in matters of counselling. Therefore it's with good luck that any dialogue I was attempting with Johan, was merely an exchange of differing insights, rather then any unsolicited advice. Most of the ideas and suggestions that Johan 'bounces' off me, are so esoteric in nature, I can rarely grasp the full import of what he's saying, nor understand the data he's attempting to convey.

As I'm sure you'd agree STEELEREDUX, ONE UNDER GOD is an extremely intelligent bloke, with a curious turn of phrase. It's my understanding that he's got so much information that he wishes to impart, he muddies the waters a bit, by not slowing down enough, to ensure he types his material in a much clearer and simpler manner.

Also, thank you for the link your provided, of the 1950's LSD experiment, conducted in the United States. Again, my mind still retains a firm NO, negative, zilch ! Thank you anyway.

o sung wu,

No need to suffer in silence. Absolutely not where so many people care, but do not know how to help someone with depression. Speak up.

If you enjoy sport, become a supporter of one of the local sporting teams. You don't have to sign up, just turn up, no cost. Watching junior sports, for example the AFL juniors, is a most enjoyable weekend pastime. Many have a website and fixtures at other clubs offer excursions if you have a car. Sport as it should be enjoyed.

Hi there ONTHEBEACH...

Thank you so much for your very supportive words, indeed I really appreciate them ! Actually, I'm travelling reasonably OK at the moment, with the process of keeping busy with my hobby (Numismatics), and undertaking chores my lovely wife 'kindly' allocates, for me to do ?

I guess by ensuring you have plenty to occupy your mind, the ol' black dog can barely get a look in - that's the theory of it anyway ? Actually ONTHEBEACH I do enjoy sport, particularly Cricket and Rugby League, I was a former player about a 'hundred years' ago ? Shamefully I'm a dedicated fully paid-up 'couch potato' now, therefore I can get very excited from the comfort and safety of my recliner ?

Another of my peculiar interests is firearms ? Purely from an engineering perspective. Yet I no longer possess any type of weapon, though I still have a current licence, and that would enable me to acquire one if I so wished, go figure ?

The age old conundrum, why men love their guns, and appear to be almost inseparable from them ? Yet I was required to carry one of the damn things for almost 32 years ? Why is it then, I and many other like minded individuals, still maintain an unmistakable enthusiasm, for analysing and exploring different firearms ? By evaluating and surveying their merits and comparing them with similar makes, as well as distinguishing any apparent deficiencies, either in manufacturing or performance in the field ? An engaging enigma for far greater minds then mine, to try and figure out ?

I really appreciate your kindness, with your several suggestions of how to neutralize this wretched depression. Once it grabs you, it's jolly hard to shake it off ? But shake it off I shall, in fact I must, if for no other reason, then for my dear wife and our family.

Goodnight ONTHEBEACH, and thank you again !

o sung wu,

Some of our most competitive shooters internationally are women.

Just two exampples, Laetisha Scanlan (Berwick, VIC) and Catherine Skinner (Mansfield, VIC) won gold and silver in the women’s trap shooting at the World Cup event in Al-Ain, UAE.

o sung wu,

Sorry for a second post, however I realised I could have posted a video of the final where the two young women won the prestigious gold and silver medals respectively.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCO_X7eOU7A

The entire video is worth watching and the final between the two Australian women is at the end. Both were a little nervous which was to be expected. True champions, but media political correctness and PC self-censorship decree that the sporting achievement and good citizenship they model are not publicised to other young people. In most countries they would be feted on their return for their magnificent feat of gold and silver.

Hi there ONTHEBEACH...

Many women are superb shots with most weapons, including handguns. Occasionally they may have some initial nervousness about recoil, even the sound of the blast, if ear protectors aren't worn. Mostly though, they're just as competent as their male counterparts, which tends to annoy some of the blokes !

I recall a situation, where there was a group of female police officers selected for an on going task force, which necessitated they be trained and designated competent on three weapons. Naturally the S & W Mod.10.3 .38 spec (using both 125gr & 115gr hollow points) their standard issued F/A. Next was the Browning 9mm Hi-Power Pistol (as carried by the Oz Army in those days). And finally, the Remington 870P Shotgun (using, 00 Buck, and 'Breneke' rifled slugs).

Except for some initial trepidation with the 870, they all qualified, and qualified very well ! A lot of the guys were very surprised indeed.

Thank you for your two threads with the interesting links to the Olympic shooters, as you say, they're absolutely amazing.

Thanks again ONTHEBEACH, and take it easy ol' fellow !

o sung wu,

Sorry, our posts crossed earlier. Thank you too. It is good to chat.

Before the Howard inspired gun laws that did SFA to deter offenders (and probably encouraged more to take advantage of disarmed civilians), the Rem 870 was common on farms to take game and cull. Thousands of farm vehicles carried one along with a Ruger 10/22. The Ruger .22 was the merciful quick end for severely ill and injured animals. Now the farmer is supposed to drive back to the homestead, unlock two safes (firearm and ammunition) and return where he was previously. Tough luck for the cows with ripped out udders and leg ligaments from the packs of wild dogs that have become increasingly common. As for the humane termination an animal critically injured on a public road, forget it. A 'public-spirited' member of the public could intervene to prevent or report the 'cruelty'. Our local (to our family farm) bush cop was reported for refusing to detour over 80km to collect a wallaby bleeding from every orifice after being struck by a vehicle. The person who reported him said she had already sent the driver of the offending vehicle packing for 'threatening' to end the poor animal's life with a large tyre lever. The brute! (sic)

Returning to women, the firearm was (is) a simple farm tool common to all women in the bush and all were damned good freestanding shots, as a fox or crow destroying lambs would find. As you know, it is all in the concentration, calmness (heart beat) and breathing.

The shooting clubs in towns offer a welcoming social environment without hang-ups.

Hi ONTHEBEACH...

As usual, you're 'spot on' ! With the gun laws as they exist now, before you could humanely destroy an injured animal, as you said, you'd need to drive back to the homestead, unlock your gun safe and return to do the job. The only difficulty with that, the poor injured animal, would more than likely die of old age ? Laws made 'on the run' and inclined purely for political expediency ?

Goodnight ONTHEBEACH, and thank you.

o sung wu, "Laws made 'on the run' and inclined purely for political expediency?"

LOL, you could be right, John Howard romped home in that election and has lived off his mistake for years.

However some say that on the wasteful gun buy-back, the white elephant gun registries and so on, 'Man of Steel' John Howard did what Janet told him to do on that subject, much to the dismay of his colleagues. A woman might be small in stature but that 'monkey's grip' and ear scorching wind have brought many a 'Man of Steel' to his knees.

Ah, what is a wasted few billion dollars of someone else's money anyhow?

Take it easy.
