In today's Australian, page 3, it was reported that Adelaide had just had a heat-wave of ten days forty degrees in a row, 'almost a record': one more day over forty and it would have equalled the old 1906 record.

God knows where they get their information from: only the last two days, Feb 1 & 2, have been over forty degrees in the last two weeks. On Friday, the Adelaide temperature reached just under forty, 37.7 or so. On Thursday last, it reached 35 or 36. Wednesday was a nice day of 32-33. Monday and Tuesday last week were hot, around 35-36, but the Australia Day weekend was quite pleasant, around 30-32. And the previous week, all of it, was quite mild.

That eleven-day heart-wave record has stood since about 1906. And it still stands.

Who cares about facts - if you say it enough times, people will believe it to be true: this tactic is called 'global warning'.

Dear Yuyutsu,

1. It is Joe.
2. It is the Australian so unlikely to be leading the 'Global Warning' charge.
3. No links were provided, either for the article or Joe's 'rebuttal'.

Yet you quickly jump on the bandwagon. What gives? You normally tend to be slightly more circumspect.

Dear SteeleRedux,

Rebuttal? I totally agree with Joe!

My reference to those who don't care about facts was to the global warmists, not to Joe.

As for a link, here it is: http://www.weatherzone.com.au/station.jsp?lt=site&lc=23090&list=ds&of=of_a&ot=ot_a&mm=01&yyyy=2014&sub=go

Dear Yuyutsu,

I'm fully aware of your stance on Global Warming. The bandwagon was accepting the ridiculous.

So you agree that a story in today's Australian reported “Adelaide had just had a heat-wave of ten days forty degrees in a row”

Really? You didn't stop to think the story may have reported something like the number of days over 40 since the start of the year for instance?

You just decided to agree.

Even if the report read exactly as Joe stated it do you really think it is part of some sort of conspiracy? From a Murdoch paper?

Okay. Free world.

Okeydoke:

Page 5 (not page 3: ah, the memory, it's shot after thirty): headline: "City hits ten days of 40s on the run". Longest stretch of post-40 days since 1906.

B. of M. maximums from Friday, Jan 24 to Feb 2:

Fri 27.5
Sat 27.1
Sun 34
Mon 39.1
Tue 43 (yeah, waiting for the bus, that was HOT)
Wed 31.3
Thur 36.7
Fri 37.6
Sat 43.4 (bloody hot)
Sun 44.7 (sweat dripping down your neck, fecking hot, drinking anything liquid, even water, hot)

Today barely 30 - beeooooooodiful !

There was a longer stretch of post-100 days in 1940, and probably in 2009, I haven't looked it up.

1906 - yeah, there was a hell of a lot of global warming back then in SA.

Tell you what though, 43 and 44.7 are bloody hot, it's all you can think about: 'where's that fecking cool change ?' Not a breath of wind until 2 am (or maybe later, my red wine ran out about then). It didn't get below 30 last night until 6 am this morning.

Just another thought: I was driving around today, after a lousy night's sleep, and kept veering out of my lane - do hot nights of lousy sleep have similar effects to being pissed ? It certainly seemed so.

I would like to see how the climate change alarmists explain why a record set back in 1906, before the heavy infux of industry, before sealed roads, before high rise buildings, before multiple cars on the road, etc etc still sat ds fast today, when the sky is apparently falling in.

It really makes you wonder if this climate change stuff really is just a money making myth.

The warmist brigade have shot themselves in the foot on many occasions. Obviously the journo who wrote the story is a warmist.

The wheels have fallen off the little red global warming wagon because of exaggeration, corruption of data and outrageous predictions.

Take the ramblings of Flannery for example. I recall PM Rudd, shortly before he left with his entourage to Copenhagen, claiming that a few hot days in Adelaide was proof of global warming.

Most people now realize 'we was had' and quite a few made a lot of money from the scam.

I accept that the climate does change but humans have nothing to do with it, the changes are beyond our influence. Bit like earthquakes or the tides.

Dear Yuyutsu,

Here is the link to the actual story.
http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/health-science/city-hits-10-days-of-40s-on-a-run/story-e6frg8y6-1226816202393#

I probably could have worn “City hits 10 days of 40s on a run” if they were talking about the number of 40 plus degree days over the summer. But then they go on to say “Adelaide, which had its 10th consecutive day over 40C”. Fail!

As an attack on sloppy journalism Joe's post stands, but then again this has been pretty standard fare from the one of the most biased, inaccurate rags in the country. What does not stand is using it to attack those who know Global Warming is a scientific fact and who seek to highlight the implications it presents for our future.

The two journalists do not mention climate change in the article. Theirs was a story about a bunch of scorchers this summer, nothing more. No debate on why we might be seeing such high temperatures, just reporting on the hot weather. Both work for a newspaper who has taken an almost fervent stance against the notion of global warming. But you lot are up in arms about it. How dare they you chant in unison! So any reporting about a hot summer is warmist claptrap? Just think about that for a moment. Are you guys so defensive about your stance that it is a hanging offence for even the Australian to mention exceptionally hot weather? You really do have it bad don't you.

Actually I need to concede Joe didn't raise GW in his post though perhaps more by accident than design. This could well have just been about sloppy reporting but you have chosen to tie it into the GW debate, with little justification.

So sloppy reporting aside let's get down to brass tacks.

In the summer of 1905-6 there were 10 days of plus 40 degree days in Adelaide.
http://tinyurl.com/k8fthlu

6 in January and 4 in February.

This summer 2013-14 there have also been 10 days of 40 plus temperatures.
http://tinyurl.com/l4htu25 (Click year at top of table to get 2013 data).

2 in December, 6 in January and thus far 2 in February.

The average of the plus 40 days for the summer of 1905-6? 41.7 degrees.

The average of the plus 40 days for the summer of 2013-14? 43.3 degrees.

Averages aside, anyone going to bet their house that Adelaide doesn't post another 40+ day this month to break the absolute record?

Tell you what, I'm happy to put a hundred bucks up, to a charity of the others choice, for a bet that Adelaide will experience another 40 plus day to to set a new record this summer, any takers? First come first served.

Finally can we at least now agree that anything coming from The Australian has to be taken with a rather large grain of salt. I know that for ages this has been the go to source for many of you deniers, but you really must face facts, its a shocker.

There is more to global warming than a few hot days. You should be more concerned about the rising sea levels. You have to be in a bad way to read the Australian.

Hi there Joe (LOUDMOUTH)...

You know Joe we, here on our (Graham's) modest little forum, are tremendously fortunate to have our very own 'Media Watch' arbiter ? Under no lesser personage than that great protagonist for truth, justice, and the Islamic way...STEELEREDUX, a legend in his own lunch time ! But wait, there's more...? This same fellow, considered an anathema by some conservative free thinking individuals, is a staunch adherent even a custodian of our very own and manifestly un-biased, National Broadcaster, the ABC. So Joe, we should all pause momentarily, lest this misanthropic antagonist chooses to deal with us with the asperity, for which he's pre-eminent ? For it has been said far stronger men, have been seen to 'wither' merely within his incensed presence ?

Dear SteeleRedux,

<<Even if the report read exactly as Joe stated it do you really think it is part of some sort of conspiracy? From a Murdoch paper?>>

Sorry - how I am supposed to know about this Murdoch guy and who owns what papers? I haven't read Australian newspapers for many years, and even then it was only for the "Classified" section, before it was available on the internet: perhaps the only time I glimpse one (which isn't the "Australian") nowadays is while I wait for a haircut , but even then I tend to bring my own book.

My information about "global warming" comes not from newspapers, but from watching a DVD with friends, featuring scientists whose names are on AGW-supporting scientific papers, explaining in detail how they were told to massage the statistics so it fits the global-warming idea, then when they either refused or later felt remorseful, they still had their names as the "authors" of those papers, often without their knowledge, and since they found out about it (and how many other scientists never did!) they are struggling unsuccessfully to have their names removed.

I have seen for myself time and again how commonly "scientists" will *prove*, using selective data and doubtful methods, whatever is asked of them by those who feed them. They too have families and a mortgage...

Dear o sung wu,

Nice of you to drop in friend.

Kinda reminds me of my favourite Tom Waites song, $29.

“Now, for the sirens it's just an epilogue
The cops always get there too late!
They always stop for coffee
On the way to the scene of the crime!
They always try so hard to look like movie stars,
They couldn't catch a cold!
Baby: don't waste your dime”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zus00TIPUJg

This would have to be the coolest songs known to man and Lord knows I have played it to death.

You wrote; ”For it has been said far stronger men, have been seen to 'wither' merely within his incensed presence”

It must be the cedarwood, you should try some.

http://robjo.wordpress.com/2010/03/22/16-common-incenses-and-their-uses/

Well this is a good old ramble. I suppose though we really can’t totally ignore the topic Joe has graciously furnished us with since that would indeed be ill-mannered.

Care to contribute?

Well it doesn't look like I'm am going to get any takers for my wager and I have just realised why. Saturday's forecast for Adelaide is 42C. I will not take the Murdoch press' word for it so I will have to go back through the data to make sure, but if that eventuates it looks like the 'City of Churches' may have experienced a summer with a record number of days over 40 degrees in over 125 years of record taking.

Just keeps adding up.

Well as we speak Adelaide is again sweltering with a 40 degree plus day. That now makes it 11 this Summer and a record in 125 years of data.

If I had of made a bet with anyone I would have won and my favorite charity would have been $100 better off, though perhaps I might have steered it toward an environmental NGO in keeping with the nature of the wager.

However it would have been on a technicality.

I did go back and check the veracity of The Australian's claims. 1906 was not the 'go to year' rather 1897-8, which experienced ten 40+ days over the Summer season, but they also had 1 day over 40 on November the 10th, not strictly summer yet should be included in the count I would have thought.

There is another 40 degree day predicted for Adelaide later in the week. That for me will be the definite record if it eventuates.

Sorry, OG, I can't understand what you are trying not to say.

Hi SteeleRuddex,

You might be onto something: If Adelaide's temperature goes over 40 on Wednesday, that will break the old 1896 record. Back to 30-odd for the days afterwards but.

Cheers,

Dear Joe,

Only if both today and tomorrow manages to reach 40 degrees. I had actually miscalculated. From my data scanning (admittedly a little rushed) it is the 1897-98 record we are chasing since it had 12 days including the November one reading over 40C.

10/11/97 40.3
16/12/97 42.1
28/12/97 42.3
29/12/97 42.6
30/12/97 41.0
11/01/98 43.1
29/01/98 40.6
31/01/98 40.3
01/02/98 41.6
04/02/98 40.4
08/02/98 40.7
23/02/98 40.1

Average 41.3

This summer we have had 11 days thus far.
18/12/2013 41.0
19/12/2013 43.4
13/01/2014 42.1
14/01/2014 45.1
15/01/2014 43.7
16/01/2014 44.2
17/01/2014 44.7
28/01/2014 43.0
01/02/2014 43.4
02/02/2014 44.7
08/02/2014 42.7

Average 43.2

To me the concerning thing is to have a nearly 2 degree greater average in temperatures over 40C over this summer compared to 1897-98. I gather you live in Adelaide so my sympathies. Must have kicked you guys around a bit this year.

Watts Up With That?
February 10, 2014

Well not exactly #37, but it sure seems like it with all the handwaving we’ve seen lately.

So far, we’ve heard from Climate Science that ‘the pause’ was caused by:

Too much aerosols from volcanoes, ENSO patterns, missing heat that went to the deep ocean, ocean cooling, low solar activity, inappropriately dealt with weather stations in the Arctic, and stadium waves, to name a few. So much for consensus.

Now, it’s trade winds going too fast that are causing abnormal cooling in the Pacific. A new paper from theUniversity of New South Wales says that once the winds return to normal speed, well, look out, the heat is on.

One thing for certain, even though the media is going predictably berserkers over this paper, the paper clearly illustrates that natural variation has been in control, not CO2. So much for control knobs.

Pacific trade winds stall global surface warming — for now

The strongest trade winds have driven more of the heat from global warming into the oceans; but when those winds slow, that heat will rapidly return to the atmosphere causing an abrupt rise in global average temperatures.

Steele Redux,

Well, there you go, we've just had the thirteenth day this summer over 40 degrees, beating the 11-day summer record of 1896-7. And there's still three weeks to go.

On the other hand, SA has some of the best and cheapest red wines in the world, and heat is what the grapes like. So it's not all bad news :)

Cheers,

Joe

Dear Joe,

So it has. And thankfully it seems to have hit only 41.6 Max rather than the predicted 43C. This still keeps the average temperature over the 12 days above 43C. Quite astounding really.

And quite true about the cheap, very pleasant wines, however a bit expensive to put fires out with.

A slight correction though, we are judging it against the 1897-8 summer season not the 1896-7 since there were only 3 days over 40 for that particular period.

I do have to ask mate whether, as a person physically experiencing the sustained heat over the last couple of months, an occurrence like this gives you pause to doubt your position on global warming? If it doesn't I'm wondering what might it take? 15 days, 20 days? To be fair I would need to measure that against what it would take me to reassess my own position.

I mean it is probably an argument to say that Adelaide's location on the underbelly of the centre exposes it to nasty heat waves and the impact of a small amount of warming, whilst not registering with other capitals, makes its presence felt in your city. Perhaps in a way Adelaide might turn out to be our 'canary in the coal mine'.

Hi Steele Ruddex,

Well, it certainly is persuasive: I had a singing gig today and standing high up at the back of a hall for an hour, in shirt and tie, dripping wet, focusses the mind wonderfully.

Okay, I'm open to argument. After all, if there was some sort of 'global cooling' starting to happen, we wouldn't be breaking these records. And not just breaking them, but with an average of 43 as well. An outlier ? Feh !

One more day and I'll be a firm believer :)

Cheers,

Joe

Dear Joe,

Please bear in mind that even if global warming is occurring and EVEN if it is man-made, to reduce it by just one degree would require a reduction of about 80% of economic activity, which would bring the existing [over-]population to the bronze-age level or thereabouts (or the stone-age if you want to reduce 2 degrees Celsius). Your cave may be 1-2 degrees cooler, but with no air-conditioning.

WRONG SEARCH TERM..TRY
http://www.google.com.au/search?q=infowars+solar+fLARE&

Space.com calls it a monster:

“The massive sunspot AR 1967 is now wider than the planet Jupiter and is very active,” Chumack told Space.com in an email on Feb. 4. “Yesterday no less than seven M-class solar flares have erupted from this region.”

The sunspot group AR 1967 has continued to unleash several solar flares as it makes its two-week trek across the face of the sun, as seen from Earth.

And while AR1967 is not earth-facing as of right now, it will be in a couple weeks. Last week the sunspot unleashed seven M-class flares in a single day. And though earth was spared from getting hit by a higher-level X-class flare, the potential for such an event certainly exists and is estimated to be around 50% because of the region’s high level of activity.

According to conventional thinking, the five-minute oscillations can be thought of as the sound you would get from a bell sitting in the middle of the desert and constantly being touched by random sand grains, blown on the wind. But what Christoffer Karoff and Hans Kjeldsen, both at the University of Aarhus, Denmark, saw in the data, was very different.

"The signal we saw was like someone occasionally walking up to the bell and striking it, which told us that there was something missing from our understanding of how the sun works," Karoff says.

So they began looking for the culprit and discovered an unexpected correlation with solar flares. It seemed that when the number of solar flares went up, so did the strength of the five-minute oscillations. "The strength of the correlation was so strong that there can be no doubt about it," says Karoff.

A similar phenomenon is known on Earth in the aftermath of large earthquakes. For example, after the 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake, the whole Earth rang with seismic waves like a vibrating bell for several weeks.

The correlation is not the end of the story.
