I never said that Australia should rely on the UN.
However, in a world where all nations face a common
threat of direct or indirect involvement in
nuclear warfare, some reliable method is needed to
limit conflict among sovereign states. Firstly, the United
Nations does provide a forum for world opinion and a
mechanism for conflict resolution. Secondly there is a
growing body of international law that specifies
the rights and obligations that nations have toward one
another - particularly with respect to aggression.

But, as has already been stated a major difficulty with
international peace-making, of course, is that compliance
with the resolutions of the United Nations and the rulings
of its World Court are voluntary because no country is
willing to surrender its sovereignty to an international
body. The United Nations is most efective, in fact, when
superpowers are able to agree on a course of action and
mobilize their blocs to support it.

Even so, the organisation provides an influential forum
for world opinion, and, while it does not always prevent
war, it surely helps make it less likely.

We have to remember that an important element in any peace
process is the international community and its mechanisms
for restraining conflict among its members. Trade,
travel, and telecommunications have made the nations of
the modern world more interdependent than ever before.

Funny how - to some dedicated apologists - anything that challenges the morality of the sacred and holy work of the conservative forces of politics is seen as a conspiratorial ranting yet the feeblest of arguments against the alternative is leapt upon like "buzzards on a gut-wagon".

No amount of evidence will ever be enough to change their view of the world.

However there is always the slimmest of possibilities that both sides do some things right and also some things wrong.

It's more likely than one side always being wrong and the other always being perfectly right.

By the way, Depleted Uranium also does some very nasty things when it gets in contact with water, even in it's inert state - especially groundwater. Abandoned military bases leave behind incredible amounts of environmental pollution.

You would think the UN would know something about the world's nations. After all, it's sort of the reason for its existence. It may seem to bear the curse of Sisyphus, trying to create a better place in an imperfect world, but it is the planetary forum of civilisation.

And then along comes this: a few days ago, the UN General Assembly voted 14 new members on to its Human Rights Council. Among the 14 were China, Russia and Saudi Arabia. Let me repeat those names: China, Russia and Saudi Arabia.

I understand your point. As these member states of the UN were elected to the Human Rights Council by the 193 members of the General Assembly, few if any of them can claim never to have violated human rights, how would YOU prevent their election in the first place. If membership of this council was restricted to only the "sinless" it could prove to be a very lonely council to be on, with the bloke from Tuvalu sitting there all alone, writing a very strongly worded proclamation on human rights violations in China, Russia and Saudi Arabia.
