Foxy,

A whole jumble of words does not alter the fact that pacifism and reliance on the UN will not serve Australia well.

To be practical: West Papua, a case example of the UN's effectiveness (sic),

otb,

If you want your opinion to be respected you
need to respect the opinions of others even
if you don't happen to agree with them and referring
to someone's posts as you did with mine as a "jumble of words," is
insulting to say the least.

However, I shall let it pass this time.

Back to the topic.

Many factors may influence the decision to go to war - the
personalities of the leaders, the influence of nationalist,
religious, or other ideologies, the extent of popular support
for war, the anticipated economic gains or losses, the
ambitions or advice of the military, perceptions or
mispercpetions of the other side's motives and intentions, the
expected reaction of the international community, and, of course,
expectations about the likely outcome of the conflict.

But one factor that seems particularly likely to encourage
war is preparations for it.

A military build up by country X may make country Y feel
threatened, leading Y to begin a defensive build-up.
Country X perceives the new build-up as a hostile move and
increases its armaments, proving to Y that its suspicions
about X were right all along and that more arms are needed -
and so on.

In general, militarized nations tend to fight with other
militarized nations, and countries that prepare for war
tend to become engaged in war.

What is being questioned here is the modern world's obsession
with preparations for "defense" (it's never called "offense").
Many countries spend more of their budgets for military
purposes than they do for education or medical care.
Over the past quarter century, global spending for military
purposes has consumed budgets in the trillions.

This represents a colossal diversion of funds from socially
useful goals, for example, a single hour's worth of these
expenditures would suffice to save, through immunization, the
120,000 children around the world who die each day from
preventable infectious diseases. I am not advocating
pacifism. What I am advocating is a balance in our priorities.

They are about to remove 1300 rods from Reactor 4 at Fukushima and have not a clue about the dangers. Prof Michio Kaku, David Suzuki Dr Helen Caldicott ,Dr Arnie Gunderson and many others say if reator 4 goes up,they should evacuate all of Japan and the West coast of the USA.

Michio Kaku says that 3 reactors are in total melt down and the radiation released so far is thousands of times Hiroshima. This is a global catastrophe that is being covered up.http://fairewinds.org/ Arnie Gunderson of Fairewinds is a nuclear engineer with 40 years experience in decommissioning Nuclear reactors.

Arjay, and we have the lunatic conservative right supporting this madness throughout the world. What hope is there for us people of good will of ever preventing this, and other craziness, when the imbecilic fools cannot see the folly of their foolishness. What do they ever hope to gain from this, can you tell me?

Foxy,

I gave the example of West Papua as just one example why Australia should never rely on the UN. There are many more and not restricted to military invasions. The UN is highly political in what it does and not interested at all it would appear in Australia preserving its cultural identity and traditions, for instance. But then you might agree with the UN there.

Australia would do well to emulate Switzerland in its pacifism, be so defensive of its sovereignty and well prepared that any likely aggressor would think first of the cost.

Australia could spend much more on health and other concerns if it curtailed the victim industries that were unanticipated negative outcomes of Gough Whitlam's social 'initiatives'.
