Depleted uranium is actually less radioactive than raw uranium ore. And uranium ore isn't all that radioactive: it's only enriched uranium which is dangerously radioactive.

I'd quite happily sleep with a chunk of uranium ore on my bedside table because I've studied enough nuclear physics to know that people who live at high altitudes or travel a lot on planes will cop a higher radiation dose (cosmic rays) from their lifestyle choices. So will people who have to undergo a lot of medical scans (not so much a lifestyle choice). I'd rather wear a brooch of yellowcake for a year and eat a steady diet of brazil nuts than have a CAT scan because the yellowcake and brazil nuts will expose me to less radiation: if the medical profession considers CAT scans to be a reasonably safe procedure I'm at a loss to understand why we should be scared of DU.

DU is nasty stuff, but only in the same way that conventional lead muntions are nasty stuff. DU is used in munitions because it is denser than Pb: the wallop it packs is all down to old-school Newtonian mechanics and has nothing to do with nuclear physics. You could probably get even more effect out of osmium munitions but the cost would be prohibitive.

Dense materials don't just make good bullets. You know those shields they give you to protect yourself during X-rays? They're made of Pb, because Pb is dense and cheap. When it comes to radiation shielding, density is important. In situations where you want really good shielding from radiation they often use DU because it is a much better shield because of its density. How much sense would it make to fashion a radiation shield from a material which is also dangerously radioactive? None at all.

I'm all for banning munitions. But DU is a fairly safe and quite useful product when it is used properly: I don't consider blowing peoples intestines through their spines to be a good application but we shouldn't let ill-use diminish the value of a material.

The fact is that a 4.5 billion half life indicates that "pure" U238, even in moderately large quantities, is not a nuclear decay hazard. U235 occurs in nature as 0.7% of the uranium in the ore as found and U235 is a hazard in concentrated form.
"Depleted" means that the shorter half life U235 (fissionable) has been removed from the concentrated natural ore.
The Linear No Threshold theory of radiation danger is a furphy. When life evolved on this planet the natural background radiation was much higher than it is now.
In one recent case of long term accidental exposure in a building in Taiwan 8,000 people were exposed to an average exposure of 400mSv over 20 years. The people were tracked and it was found that the health effects appear positive. For that number of people the predicted cancers outcome was 242, whereas, compared to an equivalent sample of citizens without the exposure the expected cancer outcome was 186. The actual cancer outcome was 5 (five). Robert Hargraves asked in his book, "Is chronic radiation an effective prophylaxis against cancer?"
