What's In Cigarette Smoke?

Cigarette smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals, including 43 known cancer-causing (carcinogenic) compounds and 400 other toxins. These include nicotine, tar, and carbon monoxide, as well as formaldehyde, ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, arsenic, and DDT.

For the first time, an American tobacco company has begun listing long-secret ingredients contained in its cigarettes directly on the label. Yesterday, Liggett Group Inc. introduced cartons that the company plans to begin using that list the ingredients in its L&M cigarettes, including molasses, phenylacetic acid and the oil of the East Indian mint called patchouli. The move comes as the state of Massachusetts is trying to compel disclosure of all ingredients by all cigarette makers, an effort that other major tobacco companies are fighting.

Liggett, which broke with the industry by signing the first settlements ever with states and private attorneys suing it, supports the Massachusetts effort as well. "Liggett believes that its adult consumers have a right to full disclosure," Liggett head Bennett S. LeBow said in a statement. Along with blended tobacco and water, the 26-item L&M list includes high fructose corn syrup, sugar, natural and artificial licorice flavor, menthol, artificial milk chocolate and natural chocolate flavor, valerian root extract, molasses and vanilla extracts, and cedarwood oil. Less familiar additives include glycerol, propylene glycol, isovaleric acid, hexanoic acid and 3-methylpentanoic acid.

Some 600 ingredients are used in American cigarettes, but a Liggett spokesman said the L&M statement was a "quite exhaustive list" of every ingredient used in that brand.

The companies have provided lists of ingredients to the federal Department of Health and Human Services for more than a decade, but government officials are legally not allowed to release the information. The industry also presented a composite list of 599 additives to congressional investigators in 1994, but that was never officially made public.

David Remes, an attorney who represents the four other tobacco companies challenging the state of Massachusetts, said the case comes down to the industry's right to protect its trade secrets.

Yes Pepper, people are so dumb, paying for cigarettes.

When all you have to do is follow one of those badly tuned Brisbane buses for a kilometer or two, to pick up all the things in a cigarette, & a few more, why do people pay for them.

You've got to feel sorry for those who live so far from public transport they can't get a daily fix, perhaps we could bottle those exhaust gasses, & ship them around the state, but only to the underprivileged of course.

Hasbeen, buses obviously have other uses, although they could certainly be cleaner, whereas cigarettes are only used as methods to create addiction and make money for tobacco companies.

...and to cause cancer, heart disease and lung diseases, just to name a few.

It is time to ban cigarettes altogether, because there is NO safe smoking level.

Pepper I looked in this morning.
A well informed and put together thread.
I had an anti smoking thread here not long ago.
So put together a contribution then my server dropped out.
Came back around lunch.
Saw Hasbeens in put, shook my head and went away to think.
What was that about?
Are you Hasbeen expressing dislike for the subject/support for big tobacco?
Not even close to understanding.
My thread saw both well informed support for banning/stopping smoking.
Accusations of Nanny State laws and denial, smoking kills no one.
Well as near as I can judge its been thirty years.
But I was a walking Ashe tray.
I smoked cigarettes roll your own, in an attempt to cut down on both took up pipe smoking and fine quality Cigars.
A consort I went for the best finest imported pipe tobaccos cost much and swam in things like rum wine and, obviously the products you highlight.
I say thank to you for the information.
And this too, every food we eat has to have it contents available to us why not this ?
And even if my mate OUG does not like it this product kills and we should tax it out of existence.

its ok to hate smokers
any sex anmy race ..any faith
yep hate smokers..lie to em...make them feel guilt blame shame

its ok..its all for their own good right?

we put up with biased bile like this threat
'''because there is NO safe smoking level.""'

so former smokers die at the same rateas smopkers
non smokers die of the same ratio's

in short the numbers for smoking and non smoking are the same

yet by clever statistical lies...all lung cancers are smokers
all costs..taxes..income etc is included in the SOCIAL COST
when the medical REAL cost is 800 million..[not 30 billion]

one smoke can kill?
think on that lie..!

one bottle of booze sure
or 7 bottles of water sure
taking all ya perscribed drugs sure

but one smoke..!
comeon even racists arnt that blind

bah...its about a nanny state..telling you stink
we dont work for you..we can tax you to death

then say the streess didnt kill ya
our bile lies didnt kill ya
your guilt dint kill ya

one smoke did
i laugh at your ignorance

get a life
worry about ya boozers
and banker bailouts..and the 2020 solution[maybe]
