I continue to be surprised at how unsurprising are the WikiLeaks cables.

Latest “revelations” in today’s Australian.

The US Government thinks Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) supports terrorism. Gadzooks! they’re not as naïve as they sometimes appear. I think most informed observers were pretty certain the ISI was a terrorist supporting organisation long before anyone was ever incarcerated in Gitmo.

The Finsbury Park Mosque and other English Mosques act as terrorist recruiting stations. Wow! Who’d a thunk it?

The BBC has a hotline for terrorists. Of course they do. As would any news gathering organisation worth its salt.

The BBC is slanted? No surprise. They’re every bit as slanted as the Murdoch media. They merely cater for a different audience. All news outlets have a point of view. All of them slant the news, often quite subconsciously. “Objective” reporting is a myth.

I remain completely underwhelmed.

Maybe.

I suspect less has changed in the M-E than most people think. Time will tell

Dear Steven,

When considering the possibility of nuclear war, we are apt to regard it as unthinkable. But "unthinkable" merely means we choose not to think about it - and in turning to the illusion that all will surely be well, we may ignore the reality of our danger and so increase the chances of war. Naturally, people have great resistance to the idea that they may one day destroy themselves. They therefore tend to think of reasons why a nuclear war cannot happen ("Nobody would be crazy enough to start one",) rather than to acknowledge the curcumstances in which it could happen. We already know, for more than decades of experience with the bomb, that nuclear war can be avoided: but there are factors that have made and continue to make such a war a distinct possibility. The mere fact that several nations have armed themselves for such a conflict is in itself evidence of that. The proliferation of nuclear weapons adds to the danger.
Clearly, the more weapons there are and the more countries that have them, the greater is the peril that they will eventually be used especially by areas that are considered as "hot spot" countries -
such as Israel, Libya, Iran, North Korea, India and Pakistan. Countries which have a long tradition of hostility. Nobody knows if nuclear war is probable or not - but it is certainly very possible.

I agree with your analysis.

I not only thing a nuclear war is possible, I think it is LIKELY. It might be Israel destroying the Middle-Eastern oil and gas fields but I think a nuclear exchange between India and Pakistan is more likely. A war with North Korea involving nukes is also possible.

It is also possible that a terrorist organisation like AQ or its affiliates could get their hands on a nuke. Pakistan is the most likely source. The government there could disintegrate and who knows what could happen to the nukes. Or elements within the Pakistani intelligence, the ISI, might hand over some nukes out of Islamic passion, for cash, or perhaps a combination of the two.

Once Iran acquires nukes who knows what could happen. The regime there is at least as shaky as that in Pakistan. What happens to its nukes if the regime disintegrates?

I have NO doubt that if AQ or one of its affiliates ever acquire nukes they will use them. I do not need Guantanamo detainees to tell me that.

Anyone except the determinedly ignorant knows what AQ and its affiliates would like to do.

That was not the point of my original post.

My point was that if the desire to acquire nukes plus a cock and bull story about AQ having hidden a nuke in Europe is representative of the kind of intelligence gathered for the Gitmo detainees then it’s not worth the effort.

My comments were solely directed at the so-called "revelations" from Guantanamo.

Steven,Iran has no need to acquire nukes. The US weapons inspectors have been there and not one nuke has been planned or discovered.Israel has all the nukes in the Middle East. They have a minimum of 200 and the means to deliver them.Last yr 300 USA Congressmen signed a letter of allegiance not to criticise Israel no matter what they do to the people of Palistine. It is the Zionists who are out of control, threatening nuke wars, not the Muslims. There is only one Muslim country that has nukes is Pakistan.Who has the track record for nukes and their use? That's right, white skinned westerners and white skinned Israelis, who have an ideology of being god's chosen people.

The real Israelis of ancient Egypt and Rome by virtue of the Sun's grace, had olive skin and intelligence. In reality, modern Israel is just a reflection of Western Imperialism using tenuous connections with religion, to steal land, which they have little or no genetic connection. So free Palistine and treat them as equals.
