There is no question in my mind that AQ or its affiliates would use nukes if they had them. They would not wait for their leader to be captured. If they had hidden a bomb in Europe it would have been detonated by now. That’s what makes this story so absurd.

But I do not think AQ have the capability of making a bomb and getting hold of one is not that easy.

The idea of using planes as weapons is as old as the kamikaze pilots of WW2. In fact Tom Clancy wrote a novel in which a Japanese pilot crashes a 747 into the White House killing the president.

I agree that if AQ do get hold of a nuke Pakistan is the most likely source. I also assume that the Indians and Americans have some sort of joint contingency plan to seize Pakistan’s nukes if they perceive even the slightest danger of them going astray.

However I think most of this is a combination of:

--Deluded thinking on the part of some captives who may actually believe what they’re saying; and

--Other captives telling their interrogators what they think they’d like to hear

I find it hard to imagine that the stated aims of Islamic fundamentalism, a global Caliphate, will get any traction with those nations that are currently trying to get rid of dictatorships. Why would they swap one version for another? Surely they are not going to lay down their lives to rid themselves of oppression, social injustice and inequity, and then adopt the same from a different ideology.

It seems that fundamentalism is thrashing. The number of target nations is shrinking and its relevance evaporating. Whilst there is no doubt the risk of further murder and maiming, AQ and all the other Islamic fundamentalist affiliates, fully understand that they have just witnessed the departure of their train.
