Dear Hasbeen,

Coastal areas kept pristine are not only for our bushwalkers and uni researchers. They are for our food supply. Pristine areas serve as nursery for young sea creatures. They grow amid mangrove leaf litter and other detritus and later become deep sea creatures. There has been a precipitous decline in ocean species that humans use for food. The decline is not just due to overfishing and pollution. It is also due to the destruction of the coastal nurseries in which young sea creatures breed.

We also build houses and factories on good farmland because the land is more suitable for building.

We not only have to control population growth, but we also have to try to preserve the capacity to produce food for the population that we have.

david f,
You make a good point about 'young sea creachers', however, my theory here is that they do breed, get to a certain size/age, then die.

Why? Because of our insistence to eradicate mosquitoes, as mosquito lava is the first line in the food chain and it has been almost eradicated.

As for development, I would like to see laws put in place to protect our 'prime land' from development.

There is ample arid land available, not to far from cities, that could be developed at a fraction of the price of prime farming land.

Now to do this the authorities need to implement a 'PH' level for the soil and, if the 'PH' fall within a good range, then that land can't be developed.

What would be better in my view is a series of high speed rail links connecting these regional towns and they could be powered by LNG as many of these town have plenty of this.

<< Ludwig, I think all the problems I mentioned are caused by over rapid growth. >>

YES Hasbeen!

Looking again at your list of gripes, all of them except perhaps for number 6 are connected to continuous rapid growth and the problems it creates with ever-increasing pressure on our resource base, environment, infrastructure and services.

It is surely one of the most fundamental purposes of government to prevent this crazy sort of crap from happening and to make sure that we can live within our basic means!

Ok, so successive Queensland governments have been just as hopeless as Bligh at doing this. Even the green Goss government of the early nineties just allowed population growth to continue totally unmitigated.

And you could argue that every state government has been just as bad, even the Carr government in NSW, despite Bob Carr’s very strong stance against continuous high population growth in Sydney.

But hey, when we’ve got such profound problems in SEQ, with water, congestion, and all manner of services and infrastructure not keeping up with population growth, what can you say about a government that just allows the main causal factor to continue on unchallenged?

Paradoxically, the factors that are most likely to reduce the rate of growth in SEQ are the various negative quality-of-life factors that this and previous governments have allowed to become so bad.

If only Langbroek and his mob would realise this and concentrate on policies that strongly address the continuous population growth factor, he’d be on a winner for sure with the Qld voter. But nooooooooooo, that won’t happen in a million years, will it!!
