Dear Hasbeen,
Coastal areas kept pristine are not only for our bushwalkers and uni researchers. They are for our food supply. Pristine areas serve as nursery for young sea creatures. They grow amid mangrove leaf litter and other detritus and later become deep sea creatures. There has been a precipitous decline in ocean species that humans use for food. The decline is not just due to overfishing and pollution. It is also due to the destruction of the coastal nurseries in which young sea creatures breed.
We also build houses and factories on good farmland because the land is more suitable for building.
We not only have to control population growth, but we also have to try to preserve the capacity to produce food for the population that we have.
