Anna Bligh has been lobbying strongly for more women on boards. She could follow in the footsteps of ex-Lord Mayor of Brisbane Sallyanne (Salaryanne) Atkinson, who was the 'Chair' of the ill-fated ABC Learning.

Hasbeen
Could you possibly tell us what it is you think the Bligh Government is so incompetent about? What are her major failings? Thanks Posted by Ludwig, Wednesday, 29 September 2010 9:37:07 PM

OK Ludwig, as you asked.
First of all, everyone knows the only thing we have too much/many of in Qld is public servants. Old Joe had 6 staff in the premiers dept, Anna has over 206. [mostly journalist spin doctors] 1/ Last week an injured bloke did 140 Km in the back of an ambulance looking for a hospital NOT on bypass. 2/ They ripped a quarter of a billion a year out of the state power system, then had to flog it off when it became so unreliable the only way to keep food in your freezer was to own a generator to run it. 3/ They used water from the Joh built dams as a cash cow for years, until they suddenly ran out. Then they ripped the council owned water assets off the ratepayer to save their stinking skins. 4/ The vindictive bast4rds did that stupid council amalgamation to get back at the councils, when they objected to loosing water infrastructure councils had paid for. 4/ Spent billions, in panic, on a water grid that my grand kids will still be paying off. 5/ They built a desalination plant that has yet to produce anything except rusty PIPES. 6/ I heard they plan to pay hospital staff some time next year. 7/ They change the "urban foot print" plan biannually, [kickbacks anyone]. One area near us was announced 4 years ago as a future 2500 homes satellite city in 8 years. Reduced to 750 home city in 20 years last year. Now back to 2500 immediately a few months back. 8/ Anna opened the new Gateway, [or some damn fool name] bridge months back. I got lost 3 times in 2 days trying to find my way off & on the expressway at the southern end, as the signs aren't up even yet, let alone the roads done. One sign was behind a tree. Talk about right/left hand. We have to laugh or we'd cry. Word allowance says I must stop. I could fit everything they have done right, in a single sentence. Ludwig,
I think the worst stunt was council amalgamation followed by perpetuating Beattie's abysmal health system followed by insane hikes in registration fees followed by over-hiring of insanely useless consultants followed by perpetuating the utterly useless education strategies etc .... how long do you want the list to be ? Is any state labour Gov any different? It would seem all they want to do is bring in new ways to rob you of your hard earned cash, either by cutting services and making you pay more for them or putting in speed cameras. I think everyone is feeling the pinch when it comes to their power bills. I recall reading 1.5 million people in NSW alone aren't keeping up, Christ knows what that number is in Vic? Anyway, in Vic if you get ill or have an accident, better to literally drag yourself to hospital, you'll save hours in getting there!

I'll put NSW Government incompetence up against Qld Government incompetence any day of the week.
You're a bunch of rank amateurs, compared to our bunch of demolition experts. Sad thing is, the opposition is monumentally unappealing too - they just sit on their backsides, waiting for the incumbents to self-destruct. The Bard knew how it feels: "I am hurt. A plague a' both your houses! I am sped." Posted by Pericles, Thursday, 30 September 2010 8:40:39 AM

Anna Bligh still cannot say 'asked'.
She still says 'arkst'.... you'd think she'd try to 'speak proper' as the Premier...after all, she did a non-performing stint as education minister before this gig. She does not support secular public schooling, and she does support evangelical Christianity being promoted in public schools. She is surrounded by sycophants. Now, that said, if Hasbeen's favoured crew won tomorrow, while they might all be able to 'speak proper', every complaint raised about Bligh's incompetence, would apply equally to that mob. Our politicians pander to the dumb and disempowered in society, as well as the greedy and self-serving. So, when we hear many complaints about health and education being underfunded, about the lack of public housing and transport.... we also hear a deafening roar from all sectors of the community who insist we need lower taxes, lower wages, and lower social conditions. There is a fundamental disconnect between the moaning about 'poor services' and 'high taxes'. Posted by The Blue Cross, Thursday, 30 September 2010 8:58:47 AM

Where are you Fletcher Christian (played by Clark Gable) to depose Captain Bligh (played by Edna May Oliver) in our hour of need. Langbroek is inadequate for the part.

Yes David, you may be right, but then they would be a 600% improvement, so not great, but much better.
Besides, it would be fun again reading the paper, or watching the TV news. We would get another announcement, every day for half a year or more, of each new con/rip off they had found Posted by Hasbeen, Thursday, 30 September 2010 1:05:27 PM

Let's re-name this topic "Bring back Joh". Gee, maybe one under god can raise him from the dead and we'll install him as premier again. After all, everyone knows Queensland was 'perfect' under the National party, and everyone in Queensland was happy with then. Oh, the good old days when everything was 'perfect'.

Hasbeen, you forgot what is most likely her best/worst decision, that being to go out and buy up hundreds of millions worth of prime farmland, in order to build a dam, only to find out that she neede permission first.
This lady has simply followed in the footsteps of her predecesor, back flip beaty, who by the way wasted millions, if not billions on several projects. BTW, for all his failings he has not been financially accountable for one red cent. Yes, she sure had a great teacher. Posted by rehctub, Thursday, 30 September 2010 7:25:15 PM

Yes Transki, I did not like the old bu**er, I was glad to see him gone.
However it was only 6 months before I [with millions of others] was singing that Joni Mitchel song. You know the one about parking lots. Something like "don't it always seem to go, that you don't know what you've got 'till it's gone" In 12 months most of us were calling to say all is forgiven, come back Joh. It would be great spectator sport, much better than that never ending AFL grand final, watching Joh get rid of the useless 50% of the public service, & stick the rest with a cattle prod. You know I even remember the 7,30 report was worth watching back then, & that's saying something, Joh could stir anything up. Now there's an idea, if we could bring him back, don't bother with Qld give him the ABC to run, that would really be fun. Posted by Hasbeen, Thursday, 30 September 2010 7:49:43 PM

Hasbeen, I’ve got to agree with your list of ‘incompetences’ of the Blight government.
But my main concerns are quite different. They are centred on the massive population growth of SEQ, which is something that Bligh has acknowledged as being a major issue. But her solution, of decentralisation with higher rates of population growth in regional centres, just stinks! I live in Townsville. We’ve had a very high rate of growth here, and in Cairns, Mackay, etc for many years. We don’t need it to be boosted for goodness sake, we need the rate of growth to be reduced so that we can approach a stable population, just the same as for SEQ. Now if she could encourage a bit of pop growth in Charters Towers, Hughenden, Longreach and a host of other small towns, then that would be good. But her absurd idea of making Townsville the second capital of Queensland with a population size to match is just hopeless. Currently we have about 150 000 people. Bligh would thrilled if this was to double or quadruple or increase ten-fold! Meanwhile, despite the quite critical problems with population pressure in SEQ, she has absolutely no intention of doing anything whatsoever about trying to slow the population influx into Queensland! One way to cut down the rate of growth is to allow absolutely no more building on the seashore. This has been done in the state of Oregon in the USA. In fact some existing structures were removed. I have enjoyed walking along that beautiful seashore.

No seashore building?
Blimey! That cuts out all but regional Oz. What would the 'developers' do? And squillionaires? Could this be the making of Woomera, and The Alice? Wittenoom rehabilitated? Mary Kathleen the new Caloundra? Mt Isa ends mining to become the new Melbourne? I like it. Posted by The Blue Cross, Thursday, 30 September 2010 10:10:48 PM

Ludwig, I think all the problems I mentioned are caused by over rapid growth. You will be pleased to hear, [I was], a snippet I heard in passing on the ABC radio today.
A simple statement that more people has moved from Queensland to Victoria, than from Victoria to Queensland, recently. Perhaps the Queensland welcome mat is getting dirty. An example of problems caused by uncontrolled growth is our use of airports. My son often flies in for a few days. He would fly into Brisbane, catch the train to Beenleigh where I would pick him up. After too many train problems, I would pick him up from the airport. After numerous expressway holdups, he now flies into Coolangatta, & I pick him up from there. Uncontrolled growth is destroying the livability of the south east. David I can't agree with you on coastal usage. I could take you to at least 100 places between Morton Bay & the Whitsundays, where it is quite pristine. So pristine in fact that if I were to drop you there with food & water for a couple of days, you would be die before you could find any your way out, or any human help. I find there is too much reserved for bush walkers & the like. A couple of people a week enjoying somewhere is OK, but when developed lightly, hundreds can live there & enjoy it daily. There is more than enough for those who like it native. AS a bloke who can no longer walk more than a couple of hundred yards, I find locking areas away for a few bush walkers, & the odd university researcher quite objectionable. Dear Hasbeen, Coastal areas kept pristine are not only for our bushwalkers and uni researchers. They are for our food supply. Pristine areas serve as nursery for young sea creatures. They grow amid mangrove leaf litter and other detritus and later become deep sea creatures. There has been a precipitous decline in ocean species that humans use for food. The decline is not just due to overfishing and pollution. It is also due to the destruction of the coastal nurseries in which young sea creatures breed. We also build houses and factories on good farmland because the land is more suitable for building. We not only have to control population growth, but we also have to try to preserve the capacity to produce food for the population that we have. Posted by david f, Friday, 1 October 2010 4:49:20 AM

david f,
You make a good point about 'young sea creachers', however, my theory here is that they do breed, get to a certain size/age, then die. Why? Because of our insistence to eradicate mosquitoes, as mosquito lava is the first line in the food chain and it has been almost eradicated. As for development, I would like to see laws put in place to protect our 'prime land' from development. There is ample arid land available, not to far from cities, that could be developed at a fraction of the price of prime farming land. Now to do this the authorities need to implement a 'PH' level for the soil and, if the 'PH' fall within a good range, then that land can't be developed. What would be better in my view is a series of high speed rail links connecting these regional towns and they could be powered by LNG as many of these town have plenty of this. << Ludwig, I think all the problems I mentioned are caused by over rapid growth. >>
YES Hasbeen! Looking again at your list of gripes, all of them except perhaps for number 6 are connected to continuous rapid growth and the problems it creates with ever-increasing pressure on our resource base, environment, infrastructure and services. It is surely one of the most fundamental purposes of government to prevent this crazy sort of crap from happening and to make sure that we can live within our basic means! Ok, so successive Queensland governments have been just as hopeless as Bligh at doing this. Even the green Goss government of the early nineties just allowed population growth to continue totally unmitigated. And you could argue that every state government has been just as bad, even the Carr government in NSW, despite Bob Carr’s very strong stance against continuous high population growth in Sydney. But hey, when we’ve got such profound problems in SEQ, with water, congestion, and all manner of services and infrastructure not keeping up with population growth, what can you say about a government that just allows the main causal factor to continue on unchallenged? Paradoxically, the factors that are most likely to reduce the rate of growth in SEQ are the various negative quality-of-life factors that this and previous governments have allowed to become so bad. If only Langbroek and his mob would realise this and concentrate on policies that strongly address the continuous population growth factor, he’d be on a winner for sure with the Qld voter. But nooooooooooo, that won’t happen in a million years, will it!! Posted by Ludwig, Friday, 1 October 2010 8:10:06 AM

Still I suppose that it is nice to know, that after some work experience as a checkout chick, the premier is probably likely to have some chance of obtaining a job in an area more suited to her skills, & natural abilities, after she is chucked out of her present one.
It is a good thing I suppose. It would not be nice, if she fails to be able to survive on her small pension, to see her living on the street.
