The point is that Humanity is the first Species that has the ability to end not only its own existence but life on this planet. Just in case you're not up with you stella time lines there isn't enough time left for earth to evolve anything with about 3 billion (declining) useful years left.....it took 3.5 approx of improving environment to evolve any cellular life.
In short this could be the end game. Run away greenhouse would sterilize earth....dead planet, a lump of rock.
