I think there has been a shift away from centralist bipartisan policies in Australia, driven by the grievance politics of the far right, in the Australian context. One Nation with a drive to divide Australians into a "them" and "us" society is working well for the likes of Hanson and Joyce, as they use shallow popularism to create a new social class of people who believe the system is working against them, preventing them for achieving their goals in life to their satisfaction, and they are now pessimistic about the future. There have been mistakes made by both the centre right and centre left, but generally Australia's political leadership has clearly promoted an aspirational outlook within society, post war.

The War on Terror caused the largest wave of human displacement since World War II, forcing at least 37 million to 59 million people from their homes.

And you supported the wars that caused the immigration you complain about, blindly supporting the U.S. and Israel.
As for Australia and 'our democracy' regarding immigration, well the left simply enabled it, but the right was in on the increased immigration too.
