Pauline Hanson at her National Press Club speech demands that Australia should be a monoculteral society, and abandon any pretence of being multicultural. What does this mean for the 28 million living here now? 51.5% of Australians are either born overseas or have at least one parent born in another country (ABS). Using language spoken as a prime criteria to establish ones "Aussieness", Hanson demands that English should our only spoken language, about 22% of people speak a language other than English at home, and its certainly bad news for the 3.5% (about 850,000) of the population who can't speak English at all, or speak it so badly that the average ocker can't understand what they are saying, should this be a crime?

Taken to the extreme, and One Nation is an extreme political party in the Australian context, this kind of "policy", as well as other One Nation discriminatory policies against minorities, could have serious implications for many Australians.

Bugger that I remember the stale, drunken, violent monoculture Australia used to be.

The culture that one nation (and the lieberals for that matter) wants is the homogenous, stifling, boring culture of the 1950s. Where anyone who wasnt a white male was a second class citizen. Where men ruled over their wives, families and society in general with incompetence and authoritarianism. A crap, insular and ridiculous society perpetually 30 years behind the rest of the world. A society rejected by the baby boomers and transformed by the immigration and multicultural policies of a succession of Australian governments. Governments head and shoulders above the past few.

How many times do they have to be wrong before we wake up to Hansons lies and prejudices. How long will it take us to see her hurtful racist dogma for what it really is. A tactic to take attention away from the real issues of them and their rich mates and their constant screwing of the rest of us.

Hi Paul

I disagree with Hanson’s comments on monoculture and in the past have cheerfully identified myself as a supporter of multiculturalism. I still do, but I would qualify it somewhat. There are certain core values in our society that we must insist that immigrants (and I’m one) embrace or at least conform to – the rule of the law, non-violent resolution of conflict, equal rights and opportunities regardless of sex, gender, race or religion; freedom of speech and religion; democratic government. These are the foundations of our liberal democracy and are precisely what makes it possible for us to enjoy a diverse society that has embraced people of different backgrounds and cultures and benefitted enormously from migration.

We can also learn from Europe, where a multicultural approach of celebrating difference and not requiring that migrants integrate has produced ghettos where people live lives separate from (and often alienated from or even hostile to) mainstream society, retaining their old language, customs, values, education systems and even laws.

The key issue lies in the differences between separation, assimilation and integration. Hanson wants assimilation – that migrants adopt completely the customs, practices, culture, language and values of their host community so they become indistinguishable from it. In rejecting this, European-style multiculturalism encouraged separation - that migrants can retain the customs, practices, culture, language and values of their country of origin with little or no accommodation to their new home.

I think the best approach is integration, which has elements of both. Migrants are full participants in the economic, social, and community life of their new country and conform to its fundamental values, but keep aspects of their cultural identity and share these with the host community to the benefit of both

Well multiculturalism has caused so much strife in Australia and every Western country that has had it forced on them by low-life politicians trying to please the UN, that a return to a monoculture would be very welcome.

One Nation's apparent acceptance of 'multracialism' is, I believe, mentioned only because it is now impossible to get rid of get rid of certain immigrations who have been granted citizenship.

For mine, Australia should have stayed predominantly white, Anglo-Saxon/European. Too late to change now, I know; but at least I have enjoyed the better part of my life without stupidly imported people total unlike the host population, and I hope the lunatics responsible for wrecking Australia will eventually pay for stupidity. The worst is still to come.

Mono Culture is already practised by the Left all over the World under the guise of Multiculturalism. Islam openly tells of one Culture or else. I wonder where the proponents of Multiculturalism stand on that !
I'd support a common Law of a Nation as it would prevent the confusion & disruption as a result of many cultures fighting for relevance. Just look at Indi, Pakistan, the Middle east & much of Africa exports to Europe & what they achieve there & here too already !

Oops. Poor editing and spelling errors caused by being thoroughly pissed off with people I regard as fifth columnists and disgraces to Australia; people who don't have the intelligence to handle free speech.

I'm not referring to Rhian who, although wrong, is a reasonable and sane person.

I note that another rich person, Kyle Sandilands, has thrown his weight - and presumably his money - behind Pauline Hanson. That should have the instigator of this thread yowling like a cut cat.
