Now if those countries were run by Margaret Thatcher, Brian Mulroney (or Stephen Harper), John Howard and, well NZ is a problem, then it would be a good deal, but with the current crop of leaders?

Yes Graham. The quality of leadership would need to be addressed.

Dr. Bruce Mabley of the Australian Institute of International Affairs, in 2020, considered that a CANZUK economic bloc might be powerful enough to rival the EU, China, and the U.S. He also said that for some it would be a “nostalgic return” to Empire and Commonwealth leadership by the UK. And a damn good thing that would be. After changes of government in Australia and the UK.
It's all very well for “progressives” to sneer at it, but what a mess they have made of the Anglosphere compared with the ‘good old days’ that they didn't experience personally or by reading the history of them. Australia, as one of the CANZUK partners, could reduce its trade with China by creating new markets with our common language/values partners. China's growing militarism and trade monopoly could be “finally tempered” by a powerful and liberal democratic bloc capable of achieving consensus on matters such as support for a free Hong Kong, for Uyghurs, and for Tibet. It's not just the leaders, it's the people advising them as well.
I just went over to the AIIA website, and listened to a few minutes of this. http://youtu.be/rsN2233_oCQ Seriously, these people are living in their own echo chambers blowing hot air up each others rear ends. (and ours) Didn't I tell you U.S. air defence was overpriced junk? U.S. embassies and their 27 M/E military bases unable to prevent attacks from $5000 drones? Trumps already begging for a second ceasefire, do you know why? Because he's been told the wars unwinnable, and the U.S. has been shown to be a toothless tiger, just as I told you all years ago. Trumps trying to find a way out whilst pretending he achieved something, but there's no way out. This is the end of the U.S. empire. U.S. lies again, to hide it's incompetence.
One killed, others injured in Iranian attack in Bahrain http://www.timesofisrael.com/liveblog_entry/one-killed-others-injured-in-iranian-attack-in-bahrain/ CENTCOM denies Patriot misfire claim, says Iranian drone hit Bahrain neighborhood http://www.iranintl.com/en/202603091509 >>US Central Command rejected claims by Russian and Iranian state media that a US Patriot missile accidentally struck a neighborhood in Bahrain while attempting to intercept an incoming threat. “Russian and Iranian media claimed earlier today that a US Patriot missile missed … and inadvertently hit a neighborhood in Bahrain. LIE,” CENTCOM said in a post on X.<< ... Meanwhile, on X http://x.com/MintPressNews/status/2031080658676674804 >>A video circulating from Bahrain appears to contradict claims from U.S. Central Command, which denied that a Patriot interceptor malfunctioned during an attempted interception earlier today. CENTCOM says reports from Russian and Iranian media suggesting a U.S. Patriot missile fell into a residential neighborhood are false, insisting that an Iranian drone strike hit the area instead — injuring 32 civilians, including children, according to Bahraini authorities. However, footage shared online shows what appears to be failed interceptor debris falling into a residential district, raising questions about what exactly happened during the attempted interception.<< Just think about how many lies the U.S. has been able to tell over the years... You know why people these days are so clueless? Because they don't bother looking or checking into to anything, preferring to believe whatever crap they hear that reinforces their existing biases. CANZUK was founded in 2015, with the idea of maintaining a close affinity of cultural, diplomatic and military ties, and a common language. A pragmatic alliance of trusted, democratic partners with shared values.
At this time, March 2026, CANZUK is supported by 72% of Canadians; 68% of Australians; 75% of New Zealanders, and 70% of Britons.
John Humphreys writes that, rather than arguing about “more/less trade and more/less immigration”, we should concentrate on the “makeup” of our trade and immigration partners. Boost productivity, geopolitical power, and connect with people who share a similar culture.
On immigration, culture is important. The same relatively free movement between Australia and New Zealand could easily extend to Canada and Britain; common language, history, Monarchy, legal system, parliamentary system, and many aspects of culture are the same or very similar. Multiculturalism has been a failure. Cultural compatibility is a must.
Trade should be with reliable allies.
With regards to geopolitical power, which Humphreys admits is probably of little interest to Australians, Australia ranks 11th, only above South Korea, and below Brazil and Mexico. The CANZUK combination would rank 4th., a position the author says would give us “an unparalleled network of safe harbours and strategic bases around the world”.
Plenty of wrinkles to be ironed out but, as John Humphreys says, it's an idea “worth considering”.
