Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) believed there are eight conditions a person should satisfy to be considered CIVILISED. In summery they are;

1. A civilised person shows respect for the individual and is therefore always indulgent, gentle, polite and compliant. They do not throw tantrums.

2. A civilised person has compassion which extends beyond their immediate surrounds. They are hurt by things their naked eye can't see.

3. A civilised person respects the property of others, and therefore pay their debts.

4. A civilised person is always candid and fears the lies of others. They never lie themselves.

5. A civilised person does not belittle oneself to arouse sympathy. They do not play on others emotions to get what they want.

6. A civilised person is not preoccupied with their own vanity. They are not taken in by false friendships.

7. A civilised person realises their abilities and are proud of them. They use those abilities to exert an uplifting influence on others.

8. A civilised person concerns themselves with beauty, appreciates it in all its forms, and holds it dear.

According to Chekhov a person must work at being civilised constantly. They must never stop reading, studying, listening, constantly exercising their mind and will.

If Chekhov is correct how do we apply that in the world today?

Anton Chekhov's beliefs would make a strong foundation for an opinion and discussion site.

Compliant (1),
Hurt (2),
Fearful (4),
Suspicious (6),
Proud (7),
Obsessive (8),
Stressed (conclusion).

"Civilised" is derived from "city".
Survival in cities demands certain traits.

Is it really so wonderful to be a civilised city person?

Dear Indyvidual,

«Civilised means to maintain order & harmony»

Well if you have harmony, then what do you need order for?

In cities, due to population density, you need order to avoid stepping on each other's feet, otherwise you won't even have a semblance of harmony.

But in the country, in the uncivilised land where plenty of space is available, harmony is possible even without order!

As rosy as Philosophy can sound to those fortunate enough to take notice of it, it does not have much pull in everyday life.
Law & Order are what's keeping us reasonably safe in reasonable harmony. The only shifter in the cogs of that reasonable existence is Democracy. Whilst a good thing philosophically, in real life Democracy is literally a fast-track to dictatorship conditions for minority groups. Democracy has a lot of shortcomings & one of them is the ease of exploiting & manipulating democratic ideals.
Just look at Australia's Voice mess. The majority (democratic) vote did not ensure for the matter to be settled. Non-wealth contributing Minority groups are not giving up & goes against all democratic ideals of harmony & order. Australia really needs a referendum on migration & the future of the Nation once & for all. Do most Australians want this to be a Christian-based society in accordance with the founding basics or do Australians want it to become a less cohesive Demographic society. If Albanese & Labor are not forced to hold a referendum before the next federal election, the opportunity to remain a reasonably civilised Nation will be missed.
