I wish PTBI would inform us as to what there possibly is to be "proud of" in being Indonesian. There simply is nothing. Is it the filthy congested cities, the grotesque corruption, the farcical judicial system, the increasing fundamentalism, the suicide bombings, terrorism, the poor hygiene, the undrinkable water, the slums, the army that is a law unto itself, the swaggering hypernationalism, the environmental destruction, the inability to respond adequately to natural disasters, the endless excuse-making and scapegoating, the anti-Chinese pogroms?
This pitiable country needs to take a leaf from Japan's book and just knuckle down and fix all of these problems. Until these things change, Indonesia is not deserving of one bit of respect. Japan, South Korea and Indonesia were all starving and ravaged in 1950, and now look at them. Japan and South Korea have gone on to developed country status with leading edge technology whereas Indonesia has just circled the plughole for 56 years. Pathetic. PTBI and his bosom-heaving ultranationalism is a perfect example of why Indonesia is such a permanent basketcase - he and his ilk are under the delusion that it is already perfect, so there is no honest self-examination and therefore no impetus to improve. PTBI should change his name to ATBI - Ashamed to be Indonesian. Posted by Kvasir, Tuesday, 11 July 2006 12:32:23 AM

@plantagenet:
Apology accepted though quite unneccessary, for I am not a Javanese. As a wannabe "spy" you should know that some things are considered "secret". :-) @Kvasir: LOL, there are virtually unlimited source of pride emanating from the sacred land of Indonesia, one of them being the awesome upward trajectory the country has taken since independence in improving the lives of its mighty people. Starting from virtually zero after devastations of WWII and war of independence, Indonesia have increased literacy from 5% to awesome 95% of the population, increased life expectancy from lowly 30 to high 70, multiplied the people's wealth by more than 15 times, while today there are around 25 million "rich" Indonesians with disposible income of more than US$ 30,000. It is clear taking into account the fact that Indonesia accomplished all this by itself (unlike South Korea and Japan who received aid from USA), has 250 million extremely heteregenous population spread over 18,000 islands stretching the distance between Ireland and Iran (unlike South Korea and Japan), Indonesia is the BEST COUNTRY in the world in improving the lives of its people. No wonder, these accomplishments have brought Indonesia into the pinnacle of international respectability, with ceaseless praise coming from international agencies. Politically, every country from USA to UK to China to Russia all wants more relationship with Indonesia and our military, as proclaimed by President Bush and PM Blair during their visits. Indonesia have been elected by 165 countries into UN Human Rights Council. Australian PM Howard has visited Indonesia 15 times over the past 10 years to pay "homage" to our presidents. As-for-what-an-Ozzie-clown-thinks,-LOL-,-who-cares? As-I've-said-before,-nobody-cares-what-a-clown-thinks. "there is no honest self-examination and therefore no impetus to improve" By-contrast,-Indonesia-is-the-most-reformable-country-in-the-world,-with-six-major-period-of-improvement-bringing-reforms-dating-from-independence. It-is-clear-the-superior-Indonesian-people-and-govt-has-the-highest-sense-of-self-examination-and-possess-the-highest-eagerness-for-improvement-amongst-peoples-of-the-world. An awesome example of the gallant Indonesian people's benevolence:

LOL - But Indonesia is still a basketcase after all these so-called "achievements"!! PTBI-Clown I find your pride just fascinating; to be so proud of something that is such total garbage. As for US foreign aid, the notorious basketcases Egypt and Tanzania have soaked up greater amounts of US foreign aid and now have nothing to show for it. It's hard work and talent, South Korea and Japan have it - Indonesia, Egypt and Tanzania don't. Get over it.
The only interest Australia has in Indonesia is that it doesn't collapse and break up, disgorging millions of boat people who will wash up on our shores like rubbish after a storm. Other than that, Australia needs to totally ignore Indonesia and focus on our worthy friends in North East Asia. It is heartening that many of my friends, even those who are progressives now say behind closed doors that Indonesia is scum and the less we have to do with it the better. When I lived in Japan, I took every chance to tell people what a horrible, dangerous country Indonesia is, how the people are so aggressive, prideful, lazy and unfriendly and how it's the worst neighbour a country could have in the world. I always recommended my friends change any vacation to friendly, safe Thailand. The funny thing is Japanese don't even consider Indonesia part of their concept of Asia! Most Japanese I talked to considered "Asia" to be Mahayana Buddhist countries like themselves, and Thailand and Burma at a pinch with Theravada Buddhism. Islam is considered beyond the pale and puts a country in a different culture zone. I was heartened when a Japanese friend came back from a business trip to Jakarta saying how exhausted he was when he got back, how the shops were boring, the streets dirty, the people dangerous, the food repetitive and unsophisticated, the traffic a nightmare, the workers lazy and useless, the corruption rife.He said his company was fed up with doing business in Indonesia and going to pack up and move to China. At least they'd get some work done. Posted by Kvasir, Tuesday, 11 July 2006 7:31:13 PM

@Kvasir:
"But Indonesia is still a basketcase" LOL, it is clear that Indonesia, the world's 15th largest economy (much larger than Australia), far from being a "basketcase", is a completely self-sufficient nation depending only on its own ingenuities and the hardwork of its superior population. Not only that, benevolent Indonesia is currently aiding those less fortunate than us, such as the poor people of Scotland, the Palestinians, and the folks of Democratic Republic of the Congo. "disgorging millions of boat people" LOL, what a joke. Throughout history, not a single person of mighty Indonesian people ever has any interest in landing at the inferior wastelands of Australia. Indonesia's emigration rate is nearly zero, compared with the millions of Australians who abandoned their "country" for greener pastures. No wonder, Indonesia is the world's 23rd happiest country, while gloomy Oz stood at sad 139th place. http://www.antara.co.id/en/seenws/?id=16104 "When I lived in Japan, I took every chance to tell people what a horrible, dangerous country Indonesia is" LOL, after I annihilate all your nonsense, now you hilariously try to pit fellow Asian brothers against each other. It is useless, boy. Currently, there are over 15,000 Japanese nationals living in Indonesia, making us home to the largest Japanese community in Asia. Indonesia is also receipient of more than $ 11 billions-worth of Japanese investments which is expected to double in coming five years. http://www.bilaterals.org/article.php3?id_article=2939 And yes, Japan considers us as their Asian brothers, in fact that's why they helped liberate us from the evil Dutch during WWII, to cleanse Asia from the contamination of white parasites. "the food repetitive and unsophisticated" LOL, funny statement from a people who enjoy eating dog food such as meatpie and sausage rolls. "change any vacation to friendly, safe Thailand." LOL, indeed Thais love Aussies so much they enjoy blowing-up the head of an Aussie nurse-tourist just for fun. So funny how nobody put any value on Aussie lives. Thankyou for:
"So do Indonesia, currently China is helping us to develop long-range missiles capable of reaching Australia.

Later reports on Chinese assistance to Indonesia regarding missiles only speaks of missiles of up to 150km range (see International Institute of Strategic Studies article of August 2005 at http://www.iiss.org/publications/strategic-comments/past-issues/volume-11---2005/volume-11-issue-6 )
Either:
A - you are misinformed, or
B - you've inadvertently revealed that Indonesia has plans to develop missiles that can hit Australia and (presumably) its Southeast Asian neighbours.
Please clarify.
You are proving most useful.
