The 2023 women’s World Cup shows Australia’s love of football and our maturity as a nation : Comments

By Chris Lewis, published 14/8/2023

Australia has come a long way since the 1970s when football was often described as wogball, Melbournians described the rugby codes as open air wrestling, and the northern states (NSW and Queensland) viewed Australian Rules as aerial ping pong.

How sad. That cultural marxism continues to plague sport & media.

So sad to see that some of the sheeple are being tricked into embracing our decline.

Yes, well done, but for mine there are too many thugs in the stands in too many soccer games. I say this as someone who once coached the game.

Today my main sports that I like to view as spectator sports are ruby league and cricket, men and women.

Great tournament sure, pity about the tickets and the TV coverage.

I got athletics stadium tickets for every Olympics from Sydney 2000 through to Paris 2024. Easily got finals tickets for the women's world cup Lyon 2019. Couldn't get near the Sydney 2023 tickets, apart from one game.

Winning at sport is a great panacea for the ills of any nation, the Romans had their "sports", gladiators and chariot races, half time entertainment, lions devouring Christians. Australia has it own gladiatorial contest, football, and for a society, it offers those brief moments of escapism which people crave.
