The 2023 women’s World Cup shows Australia’s love of football and our maturity as a nation : Comments

By Chris Lewis, published 14/8/2023

Australia has come a long way since the 1970s when football was often described as wogball, Melbournians described the rugby codes as open air wrestling, and the northern states (NSW and Queensland) viewed Australian Rules as aerial ping pong.

I just saw a clip of one the Mathilda players talking with Hamish McDonald regarding the pay differences between male & female players.
Who actually pays them & where does that revenue come from ? If it's from ticket sales then who decides how much goes to the players ? Do male played matches create more revenue ?
Is Tax payer money used to pay players ? If so, why ?
Does Sport which requires spectators to pay still get subsidised ?
If Sport is Tax payer subsidised shouldn't their salary be in line with standard Public Service salaries ?
Just curious !

Who said anything about horse racing. Paul again trying to alter what someone else said. I have never been to a horse race, but people who think it is cruel just don't understand the mentality of horses. Too busy bring unpleasant to have time to think about anything.

My horses all loved interaction with us, I would consider it a major failure if a horse of mine did not come at least at the trot when called.

When I retired an old eventer I put him down the bottom riverfront paddock, with a few mates, lush grass, & a nice windbreak of shady trees. He hated it. He would spend afternoons standing at the gate calling us. I had to bring him back up to the house & ride him occasionally to keep him happy.

Paul would never understand how we love our horses, & quite a few of them return the compliment. They call when ever they see you, wanting a bit of petting, but mostly a good brushing & a ride, something some people will never understand.

There's something frighteningly wrong when people can demand that others should pay them for their chosen activity interest !
Culture, Art & Sport are activities that should be independent of daily life not impact on those who don't share that interest !

Indy,

"There's something frighteningly wrong when people can demand that others should pay them for their chosen activity interest !"

Totally agree Indy, those who frittered away all they earned during their working life, if they had one, blowing it on booze and pokies, never providing for their old age, and now expect us poor taxpayers to carry em' for the rest of their life, thanks to old age welfare, down at god's waiting room everyday, doing the same thing, disgusting. Here's a shocker! some old fella at 65 gets onto aged welfare, then he has the hide to live to a 100, that's 35 years, costing us poor taxpayers $1 million in handouts! $1 million, we're creating millionaires! Can you believe that? A 'Seniors National Service' with a bit of hard yakka and fresh air thrown in, will soon straighten em' out! Agree?

BTW, I have though up a new aged welfare package to replace the cash handout. 7 cans of beans a week, with the days of the week on each can. They eat Mondays beans on Mondays, Tuesdays beans on Tuesday etc, etc, they'll get ust to the idea in no time. In that way there is no waste, beans are an excellent source of fibre for old folks, will help keep em' regular, and working! Agree?

Paul1405,
I agree, I know many who fall into your category of hardly ever working if at all & now get more Pension than those of us who worked full time & paid Top rate Tax.
How much of your Super is contributed to by your employer & Tax money ? What is your legacy from your work ?
Women's Sport just got a $200Mill boost from this Govt. Will be interesting on how you define that handout, welfare ?

Indy,

Being sensible, I believe government funding of sport is necessary at the grass roots level, but at the 'elite' level that should be left to private sponsorship, as they are the ones profiting from it. The WWC was a success, and Australia has benefited from the international publicity, but lets not get carried away with it, and we don't want to see any more of the Noalitions $100 million Sports Rorts, now do we.
