Yes, small reactors exist and may well be a big part of the future.

BUT....AlanB is talking about "MSR thorium". That is 'Molten-Salt Reactors' using thorium. They don't exist and although a demonstration plant was built in the 1960s it never generated a watt of usable power but did create a massive environmental issue. AlanB has been rabbiting on about this for a decade and remains as wrong now as he was then. The Chinese claim that they'll have a demonstration MSR Thorium plant ready by 2024-5, but they also promised one for 2022 which obviously didn't happen. Even if the new is built and works, the Chinese say it'll take a decade to go from demonstration plant to having the first usable plant.

So when Paul says "MSR nuclear reactors don't appear to be the panacea of the worlds future energy needs," he's right.

Only if you say so. This left right nonsense, I blame the French for that. There are various political attitudes in Australia, from the moderate majority, to the extreme minority. I don't like to categorise people too much as their beliefs tend to vary depending on the issue. You and I would agree on some things, but not on others.
