Deaths at sea: from the Titan to the Mediterranean : Comments

By Binoy Kampmark, published 27/6/2023

Mortality at sea is becoming a theme of late. The nature of how that mortality has been represented, however, has varied.

I suppose we could explain it thusly.

Our friend Joe says:
'It is exciting to live on the edge.
I am going to do something which is dangerous.
It will give me a feeling of extreme exhilaration that I need.
If I am seriously injured, you will look after me for the rest of my life won't you?'

We really need to stop and think about this.
Are we going to go on rewarding stupidity such as his?

It must be dreadful to go through life not game to go out in the sun, because you are frightened you might get sunburned, or your shadow might follow you.

When one proceeds thoughtfully and carefully in life, there is ample opportunity for experience and expression.
I don't know about others, but I go out in the summer sun daily, with suitable clothing and hat.
Sometimes my 'shadow' goes ahead of me.
It is more adventurous than I?
But only the shadow knows.
I also go out in the winter rains, once again with suitable clothing, and umbrella.
Each year, I trim trees, more than 6 metres above the ground.
And I do so carefully, with proper preparation.
But if someone wants me to swim in shark infested waters, I will say no.
I will leave that up to brave spirits who have no sense of danger?
And a final comment.
I would rather those adventurous men in the 'Titan' had shown a greater awareness of the hazardous nature of their undertaking.
Previous 'cracking' noises in the shell material at depth should have alerted someone.

Enjoying the benefits of the risks taken by others ? As foolish as many adventurers are, their antics do lead largely to inventions/improvements for the many who sit back & let others take all the risks.
We now know that a carbon fibre vessel can go to 3800m 10 times so, either they'll make the material thicker or don't use it any more.
Planes constructed of carbon fibre have been flying for years & let's hope they realise the limits of the material before disaster strikes.
What is the alternative ? Well, people could go back to living more within the means of less technology i.e. less pollution, less MONEY !!

I am sure there have always been people like Christopher Columbus and his ilk.
Those who want to travel and explore beyond the horizon.
And 'nothing ventured, nothing gained' might seem to be a wise approach to life.
But it can also be dangerous and wasteful.
So we need to think hard, and plan carefully when we make NECESSARY excursions in to the unknown?
And those who engage with high risk, just because they can, are less than savvy?
A casual voyage can end in disaster.
It only takes 40 milliseconds or so.

In a sense I agree with Ipso Fatso's "user pays" philosophy. Perhaps we should get rid of council based child care too so that those that don't use the service don't have to pay for it, etc, etc. As Reagan said "big government is bad". Doesn't mean that you can't cooperate with others to create a service for the common interest as auto clubs do with road side service.
