By Binoy Kampmark, published 27/6/2023

Mortality at sea is becoming a theme of late. The nature of how that mortality has been represented, however, has varied.

You couldn't be more wrong Ipso Fatso. It may suit you & some people to sit around wrapped in cotton wool is some soulless city, but some of us want to live experiences & see the world for ourselves.

I quite enjoyed flying off aircraft carriers, doing my bit to protect Oz from enemies. Pity our politicians decided to destroy us from with in with excessive migration.

I enjoyed my time driving Formula one racing cars, nothing like living life at 9/10ths.

I also enjoyed sailing my 40 footer around the Pacific islands. I met people, & experienced things & life that people like you could never understand. Live your life in a safe little cocoon, if you wish, but don't demand others restrict themselves to such a meaningless existence.

I do believe that those who chose to do something out of the ordinary have no right to call for help if their activities lead to disaster, but provided they cost no one anything, everyone should chase their dream.

The mass tourists who take no risks whatsoever end up costing the rest of us more than the handful who take risks which lead to useful inventions of use to many !
The former just make a mess of everything that is prohibitive in cost to rectify !

Quote: ...but provided they cost no one anything...
But that doesn't happen does it!
There are consequences to living life on the edge, and it is always the rest of us who pick up the pieces.
The consequences include waste and destruction and contamination.
And these add up to cost us dearly.

Imagine we are sailing in an overcrowded boat.
That approximates the life most people live these days.
If a few fools persist in rollicking around doing anything they please, assuredly the boat's progress will suffer.
It will probably turn over and sink?
If you are part of a team, you must behave as such.
When in Rome do as Rome does.

When it is necessary to do something dangerous for the benefit of the many, it must be planned carefully.
Preparation should include extended investigation, so there is almost no likelihood of error.
Then the benefit can be seen to outweigh any chance of error.
Look at the first man on the moon.
That wasn't thought up on friday, mocked up on saturday, with blast off on sunday?
And fingers crossed as far as the eye could see.

The world is overcrowded, and there are sensible limits to any individual's behaviour.
We need to stretch and extend ourselves mentally rather than physically.
There are plenty of activities which can be undertaken without causing a wasteful disturbance.
'I am going to do what I like, and bugger the rest' is NOT the way to live.

You obviously don't understand Ipso Fatso that what is dangerous to you is just a stroll in the park to many of us.

Ipso Fatso said- The world is overcrowded

Answer- Yes but the solution is not to "enslave" everyone. Maybe the solution is to "enslave" the ones doing the overcrowding. India and China have the same population as the next 18 most populated nations.

At least Ipso Fatso recognises that population is a problem.

What I do understand is the waste caused by those who insist on exercising their 'rights'.
They use up resources excessively, to experience what they see as real life.
Then when things go wrong, they clutter up the hospital system with their broken limbs and broken necks.
We really need to start being far more efficient in how we use our support systems?
As someone said, if they are injured whilst doing something stupid, leave them to sort themselves out.
Don't waste time or effort, or valuable resources, on them.
All surfers and skateboarders take note.
