Political correctness : Comments

By David Leyonhjelm, published 13/6/2016

When I released a video containing my National Apology to Taxpayers this week, the indignation it caused in some quarters was entirely predictable.

  1. Pages:
  2. 1
  3. 2
  4. 3
  5. 4
  6. 5
  7. All
We all know that pollies, who are masters of unpalatable preference sharing even where that defies the patently expressed wishes of the electorate; live for publicity even where that creates a storm of controversy?

Perhaps next time Dave, you could release a video of you apparently masturbating from a (nudity and profanity free) convenient trouser pocket, and not entirely unacceptable in some extreme conservative circles, it would seem, announce a name change synonymous with the activity you were performing? Something like the wonky party?

Perhaps musically back-grounded by an orchestral version of Rhapsody in blue?

The burlp could be kick started with this message, and authorized by none other than the now legendary Chinese gold miner of ghostly fame, Willie Cum?

And goes as follows, Willie Cum Can't come, Willie Cum will come when Willie Come can come. Signed, Willie Cum.

Which as some folk will know, is the now framed telegram of nefarious repute that hangs on the wall of the Westland hotel in Hokotiki, sent when flooding prevented Willie from returning via the only then available link, Arthur's Pass, from the funeral he'd been obliged to attend.

I hope this can be presented as an example of the politically correct? The apparent topic of the thread?

Alan B.:

And what about his arguments or do you just get your sexual satisfaction from 'talking dirty' on a public forum?

His arguments have as much cogent veracity as the referenced and actual literal telegram! I've tried to be fair and with the best will in the world all I could find to do justice to this comic clown's job application was Willie's telegram.

How can you tell what a lemon tastes like? Suck it and see!

"all I could find to do justice to this comic clown's job application was Willie's telegram."

Well it tells us a lot about you and where you hang out. But of course there is no need to explain yourself if you haven't done anything wrong.

Political correctness may indeed be an idiotic modern phenomena, but correctness itself, right vs. wrong, has been there all through the ages, regardless whether and how it was socially enforced.

It all comes down to Hillel's golden rule: "That which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow".

It is wrong to hurt others and while it is obviously wrong to hurt others physically, it is also wrong to hurt them emotionally through words.

Yuyutsu, that's a very nice sentiment but unfortunately it's not possible to state facts without offending or hurting some people.
Even discussing topics crucial to social cohesion, like crime, will offend some people.
For example, something needs to be done about the massively high offending rate of indigenous youths but even to quote statistics during the process will offend some people, who say it is racist to point out the discrepancies between races in the area of crime.
So, in a perfect world, we wouldn't hurt anyone. Unfortunately perfect worlds don't exist.

We now have a class of people referred to as the 'offenderati'; if they are not offended themselves, they manufacture offence on behalf of others whom they think should be offended. We should strive to offend these people at every opportunity.

Hillel's golden rule: "That which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow". Yuyutsu what absolute rubbish. I offend you so go to the big girl's toilets and have a sook.
What a cheek you might be offended so I cannot speak?
Say what you like matey and I will give it right back to you.
Hillel was another of you twats who think you are the only ones allowed an opinion, you know like Hitler Stalin et al.

Dear Nana,

When a fact needs to be said because it is beneficial, there always is a way to say it in a kind manner. It may however take time and practice.

Firstly, many facts, though true, provide no beneficial information. In that case, it is best not to state them.

Other facts could be beneficial for some people, but if hearing them can hurt others, then one should be careful to state them only to an appropriate audience.

Even when you need to state something unpleasant because it would help your audience, you should take the time to reflect on your words, turn and shape them around, reword the concept so it becomes kind rather than harsh, then wait as long as necessary for an appropriate time when your listeners are ready to receive and absorb it without being hurt.

In the example you provided, are you sure that quoting statistics is helpful or the only way to do something to reduce the massively high offending rate of indigenous youths? Even if it is, should everyone know about it, or perhaps it should only be circulated among judges and law-enforcement personnel?

Consider your intention, why you want the statistics to be known. If it will not do any good, then drop the idea. Otherwise, I encourage you to work on saying it in a kind, sweet and helpful way, in the right place and time where it will help the most.

Couldn't we play the same card? We find name calling offensive. When you call me Islamophobic or racist I am deeply offended and I just ask of you the same thing you ask of me. We find it offensive that free speech can be crippled. We think that laws against 'hate speech' are themselves hate speech. The words of those laws constitute speech which is offensive to many people. You should not be allowed to even say those things let alone encapsulate them into legislation.

It is time that people rose up against this oppression and fought back against a new type of discrimination. Many are saying that the rise of Donald Trump is a sign of the anger and frustration of people who feel like they are being controlled by a new self-proclaimed totalitarianism. It is unfortunate that the only way they can express this anger is to support someone like Trump but the day may not be far away when a genuine political force emerges to fight back against this insidious tide.

Yuyutsu, why should I avoid offending people with facts? Sometimes action will only happen because people are offended, or embarrassed or ashamed.
Tiptoeing gently around major social issues will never effect any change. People need motivation to change, and getting them angry or upset is a good method of motivation.

Dear Nana,

"offended", "embarrassed", "ashamed".

These are three different conditions.

It is a great art to help bringing someone to the point of remorse, where rather than being angry at external factors they are angry and upset at their own behaviour. When you master this art, which often requires considerable self-sacrifice, and are able to achieve this aim without offending, then by all means, go ahead.

An offended person does not feel remorse. More likely they would be seeking revenge and bolster the cycle of violence.

An embarrassed person would temporarily avoid doing bad things because they prefer to look good, rather than because they are.

A person who is healthily ashamed may genuinely try to improve their character.

---

Dear Phanto,

<<When you call me Islamophobic or racist I am deeply offended>>

When you call me Islamophobic or racist, rather than being offended I look inside and thank you for exposing those traits in me. I know that I am an Islamophobic and racist, even while I don't act on those.

<<It is time that people rose up against this oppression>>

I feel oppressed by many unjust laws, but surprisingly not as much by 18C. I find it legitimate and reasonable to create a safe space in the public arena, where people can walk about without fear of being offended, even verbally.

Regrettably, 18C wrongly extends the definition of "public space" way beyond what is legitimately public, therein: {"public place" includes any place to which the public have access as of right or by invitation, whether express or implied and whether or not a charge is made for admission to the place}. I am indeed upset by this oppressive definition (even while it doesn't oppress me personally since I have no wish to hurt anyone even in private).

Here's a suggestion for the Labor apology that Shadow Minister calls for:

"Dear Australians, we apologise most humbly for the measures we took to protect you from mass poverty brought on by the world banksters' Global Financial Heist. We know in retrospect that we shouldn't have spent the money and should have done what the rest of the OECD did, saved the money and let you suffer devastating hardship which continues to this day. We should have followed the advice of the LNP which was [what?]. Our bad."

Julian the labour party used all the surplus built up by LNP and then borrowed billions more to spend on a pointless exercise. That did what? We are now extremely indebted and at some stage we will be expected to pay it back. as Margaret Thatcher said Socialism is OK until you run out of other people's money.
I agree with your point about bankers but Obama printed money to buy their shoddy over valued assets off them. The US now have worthless assets and the bankers are back on bonus.
We do not need a Royal Commission into banking just put in rules that lock the "Banker" with his actions. This is to say be a bad boy and there is only BIG gaol time and bankruptcy. The US showed the way with Bernie Maddox.
Banks should have strict rules with deviation resulting in the directors suffering gaol and bankruptcy.
Labour are pussies, if they get in the will get straight back onto the bank's gravy trains.

Re J. Bowyer: Howard and Costello plundered public assets by privatising them or otherwise flogging them off (even Australia's gold bullion reserves) and relabelling the proceeds as budget bottom line. This is the source of the pretend-surplus.

I could produce a domestic surplus by selling my house and waving the proceeds in the air, but nobody would then be fool enough to grant me a loan.

Julian note the Queensland Treasurer has plundered the Public Service superannuation fund to spend spend and spend.
You blokes keep going but the day is fast approaching when debt is finished. Go to History the big deflation in the 1700's that lasted 80 years. At the end goods were cheaper than at the start.
Never mind all part of life's rich tapestry.
I hope I see it starting as I know I will not see the finish of it.

Julian, the GFC had nothing to do with the bankers.
They were victims themselves as their bomb of subprime mortgages went
off in their face.
They had intended to get out with a nice big profit but the timing was wrong.
It was the oil prices that set it off.

I am an Islamaphobe, and do not take offence if someone calls me that.
I am surprised at how many people I speak to turn out to have the same
belief as I do in the risk we are running with Islamic immigration.

Afterall if you are not concerned then you do not understand what is going on.

Baz I have to take you to task on your description of yourself as an"Islamaphobe".
Phobia is an unreasonable fear. There is every reason to fear Islam. Just a look at the Koran, the history and whats going on in the islamic world gives you countless reasons to fear them.
Look at the Lebanon. It used to be fifty fifty muslim and christian. Now it is eighty twenty with oppression and killing of christians and non stop war and destruction. A rich successful society reduced to a third world crap hole.
I just hope it happens to Europe before us and then we can ram this down the throats of our resident Quislings!

Ahhh well JBpwer, maybe you are right, but at least it lumps me
together with people who do not understand the reasons for their concern.

I have never been to Lebanon but I remember the civil war they had there.
It thought it was total madness at the time but I did not know about
the damage to their genome which of course explains why they do such
things as they are incapable of reaching accommodation with other cultures.
We see it all happening again in Syria and Lakemba.

"Julian, the GFC had nothing to do with the bankers.

It went off in the world's face as well after they spread subprime mortgages in the hope of profiting at the expense of subprime mortgagors. But not the whole world. We had elected a government that governed for the people not for Mr Greed. An Abbott-Santamaria-Turnbull government would have governed for Mr Greed as its proposed $50 billion gift to corporate business shows. We would have been where Greece and Ireland and Spain and Portugal and the USA are now, with crushing mass poverty while their governments put banksters' demands above retention of public welfare. The cracks are showing in Britain also, with NHS in crisis and public housing, once sustainable, becoming unsustainable..

When the Global Financial Heist struck I withdrew everything I had from the bank. When the Rudd response became apparent I could safely put it back in the bank, relieved that nobody of the likes of Howard or Costello or Abbott or Turnbull was at the helm to throw Australia into mass chaos and poverty at Mr Greed's behest. Others I know responded the same way.

Julian I agree with some of what you have said about the GFC but! Rudd was hopeless and like all labour spends but never, never saves or even tries to balance the books. This augers badly for when things go wrong very soon. Labour will look after the banks as quickly as the LNP, do not worry about that.
Like you my cash is in the bank but I have been told the Government Guarantee is only for $250k each. When things go pear shaped rest assured it will only be walk around mugs like me who lose.
Big money will be tucked up in assets protected by family trusts. Oh by the way there is probably as much "Big money" in your labour ranks as my LNP maybe even more.

Julian, what you have said is just a pumpted up version of the greens and labour lines.
They do not have a clue either of what is actually going on.

JBowyer yes the guarantee is $250k if the government has the money.
So move into different banks but make sure those banks are not
part of the same group, eg Westpac & St George, otherwise they are
treated as one deposit.
However, if the Financial Stability Board has been activated then
they will take as much as they like to save the bank that is under threat.
They could take the government guarantee after it is paid.
I have not seen anything that would rule that out.

There's a very good article on this at http://evonomics.com/trump-phenomenon-is-a-sign-of-oligarchy/

We're behind the eight ball here in Australia, but when America gets a cold Australia is bound, sooner or later, to sneeze. And bland slogans without analytical content won't stop the tide.
