Julian I agree with some of what you have said about the GFC but! Rudd was hopeless and like all labour spends but never, never saves or even tries to balance the books. This augers badly for when things go wrong very soon. Labour will look after the banks as quickly as the LNP, do not worry about that.
Like you my cash is in the bank but I have been told the Government Guarantee is only for $250k each. When things go pear shaped rest assured it will only be walk around mugs like me who lose.
Big money will be tucked up in assets protected by family trusts. Oh by the way there is probably as much "Big money" in your labour ranks as my LNP maybe even more.

Julian, what you have said is just a pumpted up version of the greens and labour lines.
They do not have a clue either of what is actually going on.

JBowyer yes the guarantee is $250k if the government has the money.
So move into different banks but make sure those banks are not
part of the same group, eg Westpac & St George, otherwise they are
treated as one deposit.
However, if the Financial Stability Board has been activated then
they will take as much as they like to save the bank that is under threat.
They could take the government guarantee after it is paid.
I have not seen anything that would rule that out.
