By Peter West, published 10/12/2015

Many discussions of masculinity, my own included, have pointed out that masculinity has its paradoxes.

Surely a person can be progressive without subscribing to feminist doctrine? Does one demand the other?

regressives obtain degrees in perverting language. eg gay use to mean happy, they now want to redefine the word marriage and they call a baby a foetus (a baby) in order to ease ones conscience.

Well runner mate: gay means homosexual. That battle has been won, or lost.

Once in our lunch-room c. 1976, some old person said

"Oh look at all the men in their coloured shirts! Don't they look GAY !"

Nobody wore a coloured shirt for months afterwards.

Did anyone think to check the dictionary on what macho means? And what the Village People did to it? There's a PhD thesis for some enterprising spark !

Waverley,

The common usage of 'gay' for Generation Y and later (and probably taught to their parents) is anything but gay, as in the previous meaning of gay, as in carefree etc, or the later liberal redefined meaning, ie homosexual, usually male.

To a GenY or later, who must have suffered dreadfully at the hands of the liberal (a misnomer if there ever was one) thought police, reacted as young people do and should.

If your post was described as gay, what do you take that as meaning? -Just trying to make a point..

I agree with you that leftists here have aped the Marxist tactics of their liberal counterparts in the US (mainly) and have been busy redefining terms. George Orwell would be rolling in his grave at the redefining of 'discrimination' for instance.

I presume you are saying that the Cultural War criticised by Peter Hitchens and others has been fought and won? Perhaps not, the young are reacting to the tyranny of political correctness.

OTB

Reports that feminism was always a left-wing movement are greatly exaggerated. Sure, Betty Friedan was left-leaning, but one swallow does not make a summer.

Trust me. As a feminist, I've run the gauntlet of EXTREME!! anti-feminist hostility from left-wing men over the years. In fact, I have had to face the very unpalatable conclusion that a lot of left-wing men are far MORE sexist than right-wing men.

At least, right-wing men (and anti-feminist right-wing women) are honest about their steadfast belief that men are infinitely superior to women in every way, shape and form and that women were put on this earth to serve men's every emotional, physical and sexual need. Left-wing men are totally DITTO on this, but don't ever expect them to admit it. Their ever so sensitive social-justice intellects are too much up their anti-oppression arses to friggin well realise that they actually might form part of an oppressive class, i.e. men. To lefty males, oppression is only something that the rich and powerful do, not working (but, really, middle) class heroes like themselves ... no, never.

So, where was I before I started ranting? Oh, yes. Reports about feminism being left-wing are greatly exaggerated. So too, this BS about feminists all being white and middle class. The basic fundamentals of feminism transplant fairly efficiently into all cultures, classes, religions, minorities and majorities. For example, Saudi Arabian feminists have now achieved a victory that Western feminists achieved 100 years ago. The fact that it came 100 years late to the party makes it no less of a victory.

Killarney- I think you make some good points. Good for you

Why should men and women always agree?

Better a right wing ranter than some insincere guy "oh I'm a feminist, um, what are you doing tonight, love?"

enjoy your week...
