Now I have to make a point here. Yes there were a few incidents of men cracking under the strain if Combat & committing unauthorized actions, or atrocities. What I find strange though is the lack of the same abhorrence to the multitude of atrocities committed by the enemy. Be it Viet Cong, North Vietnamese Regulars, the Taliban, Al Qaida or ISIS or any of the other multitude of Terrorist Organizations.

I find the lack of abhorrence & calling for these Organizations to Cease & Desist & be held accountable in a Court of Law somewhat strange. It is as if they condone the Terrorists many atrocities but abhor any committed by the Western Forces.

Jayb, I can't speak for anybody else, but for my part I can't see any point in belabouring the bleedin' obvious point that atrocious acts are atrocious. Especially when they are committed by groups that do not in any way claim to hold to the same principles that are seen as fundamental to an operating Western liberal democracy.

However, there is a great deal of point in discussing why acting atrociously in response is a bad idea. There is also a great deal of point in discussing why such actions, when carried out in the name of a State that claims to be a Western liberal democracy, are not merely atrocious, but hypocritical and that they undermine the claim to superior moral/ethical grounding of the Western liberal democracy which permits such actions to be carried out in its name.

The same holds true for subversion of the rule of law in any way that undermines the fundamental commitment to just and fair process which is a fundamental aspect of Western liberal democracies. This includes the creation of statutory processes that seek to avoid the scrutiny of Courts, such as summary power vested in Ministers with appeal rights curtailed.

You commented in relation to the alleged sniper in a way that seemed intended to minimise the abhorrent actions of Calley and his men, none of whom were punished for raping, burning, bashing and shooting over 500 unarmed civilians, including women and children. German soldiers were hanged for less than that after the Nuremberg trials.

If you seek to defend Calley and his men, then you must similarly defend the men and women of the various insurgencies in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, etc, etc, etc, who have been burying their babies and their wives and rebuilding their homes after attacks by Western liberal democracies for decades.

If you were one of them, what do you reckon you might think was a reasonable response?
