Dear Individual

A very interesting response telling me I am 'only an academic'… This is the type of response I often get from those who have run our of ideas. Usually by those who have done little themselves.

Let's have a pissing contest since I am only an academic: I worked my way through uni as a bouncer; I then worked 8 years in banking and finance building a successful career but left to work around the working in conflict zones; I completed a PhD while working full-time in less than 4 years and I have 4 books, countless articles and am international recognised for my research and teaching.

Mostly I am a teacher - which I love and work with students who have been homeless and use my office to sleep, to those who are the first in their family to attend uni. I love it and am proud of what I do.

Here's a portrait of incongruity.

This toughie (perhaps an ex-bouncer) stands on the corner throwing mud at passersby. Six gentlemen (all on their way to an important fund raising function in aid of widows and orphans in sub-Saharan Africa) happen by and are similarly assaulted --after many many many attempts to negotiate a peaceful political solution they decide they have no other option than to disarm the culprit.

Shockadelic: tweaks the attackers fingers & takes his bowl of muck away.
Jardine: gives him a kick up the backside.
Lego:gives him a black eye.
Aristocrat:gives him a bloody nose.
Spindoc shoves him over.
Hasbeen slowly empties the last bowl of muck over him.
And in passing, Individual gives him a teasing pat on the head.

After an hour of two the toughie picks himself up, makes eye holes in his mud mask, looks around and says: "Hoy! Individual, I've got a bone pick with you"
