Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem has never been
recognized international. Only a handful of countries
including Kosovo and Guatemala joined the US in
recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital. Australia
has now gone back to its original position with the
hope that this will encourage peace talks between
the Israelis and the Palestinians.
The status of Jerusalem remains one of the thorniest
issues in the decades long conflict and has caused
numerous rounds of violence. The problem has always
been that Israel has asserted that the entire city
is exclusively theirs - denying any Palestinian connection
to their ancient, spiritual, cultural, and economic capital.
It will be interesting to see if any presidential
candidate in the US will have
the guts to take up the gauntlet that the Australian
government has bravely tossed back down regarding Jerusalem.
It could possibly help encourage the Israelis and Palestinians to
get further peace talks under way
