Foxy,
The Aboriginal Australians that I have hunted and lived with have eaten witchety grubs as a delicacy but never as substantial food; they have much preferred red meat be it ‘roo of wallaby, steak or mutton and with a preference for duck rather than chook.
What I have observed over many years is not any preference for insects.
The rarer pink witcherty grub from submerged logs in coastal lagoons are a particular favourite, though not one of mine; the only insects that I’e ingested have been unfortunate accidents.

Hi Issy,

"The Aboriginal Australians that I have hunted" how many did you bag in a day?

As a kid, I once ate a witcherty grub (partly) fresh from a rotten log. Not that nice, bloody awful in fact, I spat it out.

Did you see the cockroach farm in China? In a huge shed they keep millions of cockroaches, fed on scraps from restaurants. Around the shed is a moat (keeps the cockroaches in), and in the moat are fish, big fat fish fed on the cockroaches. Great sustainability.

I love seafood, the wife particularly loves 'kina' (sea urchin) which have internals much like a witcherty grub. What's the difference? I love fresh oysters. Remember 'Soylent Green' with your man Charlton Heston.

When I was a teenager I went hunting with Aboriginal teenagers on an uninhabited island off the coast of northern Queensland. (They played 'tree chasies', which is the same as chasies, only in the forest canopy.)

The best soup I have every tasted - world class - was the fresh turtle and shark-fin soup they cooked up in the billy on the beach, the only other flavouring a dash of sea-water. Absolutely delicious.

The left would be in paroxysms of agony over this - whether to exult in black privilege or hate them for eating meat.

We all have different tastes in many things, including
food. I remember when sour-cream was considered yuck
by some. As were gherkins. And don't get me started on
yogurt. Now look how far our country has come. How
popular is sushi, herrings, and bratwurst and kranski,
pickled cabbage.
not to mention what we drink - and their exotic combinations.
Did you know that the most expensive cheese comes from a
donkey?

Morning all.
Quite a while since I have posted on OLO. Ref de topic. An old Trade Commissioner I met on my wanders years ago told me one can eat most anything with impunity if one downs a couple of good slugs of, Rum, Whiskey or similar prior to dining, preferably at sundown. It will keep Montezumas Revenge, Delhi Belly and other nameless Bowel Bugs at bay he said. His advice appeared to have value as I did indulge in meals and snacks with very dubious origins along the way with no ill effects.
Take it easy.

Foxy,
The change in the Australian diet whilst being most palatable also had another good spin off, the almost complete disappearance of the all to common boils.
