diver dan,
It's not our rights being eroded, it's our wrongs being addressed !

Hi Dan,

No. My rights are not being invaded by technology -
not in this case when technology is being used
to improve my lot by detecting the existing
problems in my surroundings and hopefully
correcting them.

Great innovative idea. Go Swinburne Uni -
great innovation! Forward thinking Council!

I don't see how videoing repairwork that needs doing could be turned into spying. But, I don't believe that this piece of expensive technology will mean that repairs will be done more often than they are now. It is clear that the people coming up with this nonsense don't have enough to do; are paid too much for doing very little, and rates should be reduced if this is the way they carry on. Ratepayers should be making their feelings known - but they will not, most of them not even bothering to vote at council elections.

Answer- I support your implied vigilance against surveillance- it seems pretty prevalent- and doesn't seem to have a mandate in many cases.

I agree we should be reducing the amount and scope of government surveillance.

It's my understanding that governments already have video footage of roads but Swinburne University appears to be refining and standardizing it into a commercial product- usually the cameras as mounted so that they are focused on the road. In this case "two" cameras are used for the stereo/ 3D vision effect. The good thing about mounting the cameras to garbage trucks means costs are kept lower as a specialized vehicle is not required- and the footage is updated weekly.

* As long as they are only surveilling assets for which they are responsible for I'm cautiously supportive.

I'm sure such technology could be used for other more nefarious purposes.

Other concerning camera technologies...
Google Map Street View is probably more invasive of privacy than this.
Other fixed public cameras that observe cars along roads.
Traffic cameras
Body cams

It's been said that London has the highest surveillance of any city in the world.

In a parochial community- every person is the surveillance system- they generally only have to worry about strangers. In a cosmopolitan community everyone is a stranger. To me the problem could be strangers in our communities.
