To back both favourites in what was effectively a two horse race, you need to obtain odds that total less than 100%, bookmakers frame their market to over 100% eg the two have equal chance then say $1.90 each of two. If the weight of money is equal on the two then regardless of which one wins the bookmaker makes 5% profit. You will say, but what if I get better than even money both runners or their total odds is less than 100% I win, true! But you have to lay one at some price, then lay the other at some other time at a good price (total less than 100%) at some other time. All this is very difficult, you have to be a fortune teller, anticipating in advance the minimum odds needed for the second runner! In a very tight market, one close to 100% you have to outlay a large amount of money to win a little. Say to win $5000 in a 90% market you have to outlay $50,000. So how much did you outlay to win your old car? Don't tell me you got odds of $3 or $4 for Biden or Trump bookmakers are not that stupid. Why would a bookmaker lay a runner at $3 and $4 when he knows he can do plenty of profitable business at $1.80 and $2.10 respectably.
