Thanks Pete for keeping us in the loop.
Once again I am looking forward to a debate except that surely this time - I trust that we shall see more policies and less insults. Anyway, fingers-crossed for this one. Posted by Foxy, Tuesday, 6 October 2020 3:29:08 PM

My pleasure Foxy
Yeah, I think or hope, Pence sticks to policies - although, as ever, his strings are being pulled by his Boss. Kamala Harris is likely to pull the Trump'n'Pence rug - as a future President should. Cheers Pete Posted by plantagenet, Tuesday, 6 October 2020 3:46:12 PM

Hi Pete,
From what I've read it seems that they're going to have plexiglass separating the candidates this time round. And whether the second presidential debate is to go ahead on 15th October depends on Trump's health. There's talk of it being a "virtual" one. I wonder if Trump will agree to that? Posted by Foxy, Tuesday, 6 October 2020 4:07:33 PM

Hi Foxy
Yeah I mentioned "plexiglass" in the opening post of this thread. Plexiglass should make it easier to isolate interrupting candidates in switch off the mike scenarios for the VP debate and remaining Presidential debates. Whether a moderator would dare switch off the mike of a POTUS (serial offender Trump) remains to be seen. The Trumpit may be forced to hold a "virtual" one, from his sickbed, IF he really has Covid. But "virtual" would do the whole World a favour because it'll make it easier to switch Trump off. Pete Posted by plantagenet, Tuesday, 6 October 2020 5:31:03 PM

I don't think these debates achieve much, albeit it may influence a small minority not tied to republicans or democrats.

We should not under-estimate the Vice Presidential
debates. Millions will be watching. And I certainly would not under estimate Mike Pence. He's pretty familiar with policy and facts. I believe that he's going to deliver a solid performance over 90 minutes. Pence will keep to the issues - he's very civil. He won't be into name-calling. He's not misogynistic or racist. He doesn't see the Vice Presidential debate as an - Asian-Jamaican woman versus a white guy. He has a good chance to prevail - and win. He after all has more experience in politics than Kamala Harris. Posted by Foxy, Tuesday, 6 October 2020 6:52:41 PM

Kamala will not exactly pass the "Proud Boy Test" of OLO's white supremacist males. She's:
- a woman - half African-American, half South Asian-American - a self-made woman - highly educated, with the equivalent of a PhD in Law - she has supported some progressive causes-laws. All quite threatening, for some men. More see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamala_Harris Posted by plantagenet, Tuesday, 6 October 2020 9:24:14 PM

No doubt Harris will say the things the left love to hear; they always do.
But, in the case of Democrat supporters,I would not be confident they will do much given policy trends in recent decades. The US is a very tough political environment; much tougher than ours with immense cleavages between Democrat and Republican supporters. We simply do not have the same cleavages here. And I am thankful for that. Posted by Chris Lewis, Wednesday, 7 October 2020 5:33:43 AM

Having said that, I would be voting Democrat in 2020 pending a hope that they would continue to fight against the CCP.

Chris Lewis,
The Chinese are your Asian brothers/sisters irrespective of their political stance. You seem to be having trouble accepting your Asianess that our politicians, bureaucrats and business people have worked so hard to bring you during the Great Asianization Period (1980-2020) in Australian history. The Asianization of Australia (aka Australian Multiculturalism) aimed to integrate us into Asia and give us a population that mirrored that of the Asian continent and in the not too distant future Australia will become an extension of China. You just have to change your attitude if you want us to accept you as Asian. Have a chat with Foxy and FOULmouth. I'm sure they can steer you in the right direction. For more on the effects gained by the CCP with their virus: Other than the Brits, Australians are perhaps more irrationally fear-stricken than the citizens of any other nation. A survey prepared by CT Group in September found a staggering two-thirds of Australians believe they are going through a “second wave” of infections — the highest out of all of the surveyed countries which include the US, UK, India, Hong Kong, and the UAE.
When UK's Beefy Boris copped the China virus, he went to ICU and came out bleating and scaring the Brits even more. More lockdowns. More infections in a "second wave". Whereas, the man so hated by the ignorant, Donald Trump, turned his own experience into a positive vote-getter. Posted by ttbn, Wednesday, 7 October 2020 9:33:15 AM

Hi ttbn, etc
Oh yee of little historical knowledge.. Have you chaps forgotten that: - a Democrat President, abbreviated FDR, fought half of World War Two against an Asian power, Japan. The Democrat, FDR, did more than any Republican to beat Japan. - His Democrat Presidential successor, Harry S. Truman, finished off Japan and then fought the latter part of the Korean War, forcing the invading CCP Chinese troops out of the Korean Peninsula. - Truman's Secretary of State, General Marshall then started a Europe wide economic Plan that held the Russians back from further gains in Europe. Truman's army and airforce also kept the Russians back. Now your TRUMP is welcoming Russian advances whenever possible, because they pay him. It takes 6 WEEKS to recover from COVID-19. Get it? He was never infected. I think what happened is that someone in the White House did get it and protocol dictated that the President be immediately hospitalised and thoroughly tested and keep under a doctor's eye for at least 3 days before allowing him to continue to work. To me that makes more sense than claiming Trump is some sort of superhero with miraculous recovery powers. Foxy I see you constantly blame Trump for the Covid-19 deaths of 200,000 Americans. Fact is without the deaths in California America moves from 10th per capita to 47th in the World for deaths per capita. Joe Biden and the Californian Mayor said Trump was China-phobic for closing the Borders to Chinese travellers. When the Mayor was saying go out to Chinese restaurants and hug a Chinese. Covid-19 was spread through the American community to California from visitors from Wuhan China. The Democrats would not have closed the Borders if they were in power. The Democrats refused proper border protection and welcomed those crossing the borders.
America will reap the results of the seeds they have sown over the last 20 years, in this coming election. America is in a spiritually sick state as they have moved away from divine principles of family and value of life. Making criminals and those taking life hero's and the law abiding evil. HARRIS WINS :)
CNN Reports http://edition.cnn.com/2020/10/07/politics/mike-pence-kamala-harris-vice-presidential-debate-poll/index.html "Post-debate CNN poll: Harris seen as winner in a contest that matched expectations" More Americans said Sen. Kamala Harris did the best job in the vice presidential debate Wednesday night, according to a CNN Instant Poll of registered voters who watched. About 6 in 10 (59%) said Harris won, while 38% said Vice President Mike Pence had the better night... Harris did improve her favorability rating among those who watched, according to the poll, while for Pence, the debate was a wash. In pre-debate interviews, 56% said they had a positive view of Harris. that rose to 63% after the debate. For Pence, his favorability stood at 41% in both pre- and post-debate interviews. Harris' numbers went up among men (from 49% favorable before to 56% afterward) and women (from 63% favorable before to 70% post-debate), and she even boosted her favorability rating among Trump supporters (from 4% favorable pre-debate to 12% after). Pence's numbers held steady among men and women (50% of men had a favorable view in both pre- and post-debate interviews, among women it was 33% pre-debate and 32% after). As after the first presidential debate, though, most voters who watched said Wednesday's event hasn't changed their minds about whom to support. Overall, 55% say it had no effect on how they are likely to vote, while those who did choose a side tilted narrowly toward Joe Biden. Both vice presidential candidates are broadly seen as qualified to be president... Most debate watchers said Harris did the better job defending her running mate (64% Harris to 34% Pence), that she seemed more focused on uniting the country (62% to 34%), was more in touch with the needs and problems of people like you (61% to 38%) and that she expressed her views more clearly (57% to 39%). Most said Pence spent more time attacking his opponent (56%) than thought the same of Harris (36%)..." Posted by plantagenet, Thursday, 8 October 2020 4:57:20 PM

The lesson so far with these debates is that the moderator needs a shut-off button, with contestants ideally each enclosed in plastic bubbles. I was a bit appalled at how Pence tried to stand over Harris by speaking over both her and the moderator. As Trumpf's lap-dog, he did a loyal job.
Harris seeme3d to wander off-script at times, but I expect she'll do far better in future contests. 27 days to go. Oh, how slowly they go :( Posted by loudmouth2, Thursday, 8 October 2020 5:36:57 PM

"The vice-presidential debate was a reminder of what politics was like before Donald Trump was elected. It was calm, focused, policy-driven and, at times, even polite.
...In short, it was an actual debate between two adults who presented themselves as what used to be regarded as presidential. Mike Pence did a sterling job with the cards he was dealt. If he wasn't defending what the editors of the New England Journal of Medicine have today described as the "dangerously incompetent" US response to the coronavirus, he might have emerged the clear winner. As things currently stand though, he lost. Firstly, because there was no big moment that would change the course of a Republican campaign that increasingly appears to be going completely off the rails. Secondly, because many people watching were reminded of the relative serenity of politics without Donald Trump in charge. The day after the debate, Trump did a phone interview with Fox Business in which he called the first black woman with a shot at the vice-presidency a "monster"... The question is whether Americans, who firmly rejected "politics as usual" by electing him in the first place, are ready to return to something resembling life before Trump. With less than four weeks until polling day, the answer seems to be a resounding "yes". The political fallout of Trump's diagnosis continues To many observers, Donald Trump looks like a president spiralling out of control and headed for an historic election thumping. During his stint in hospital with COVID-19, he claimed he had learned a lot about coronavirus. Minutes later, he effectively ordered his security detail into a hermetically sealed car so he could do a drive-by for the 100 or so enthusiastic supporters gathered outside the hospital. Since being discharged from hospital, [Trump] claimed that being infected with COVID-19 was a "blessing from God". He claimed the experimental, but promising, treatment he received was as good as a "cure", perhaps not realising the antibody cocktail was developed with cells originally derived from fetal tissue, a practice considered abhorrent to much of his base...." >Her Energy proposal will create massive unemployment in the fossil fuel industries which has built America. Technology will do that anyway, and most people agree that disruption like this is good for the economy overall. Her policies would speed up the process, which is no bad thing economically, and would bring even greater benefit environmentally. Unfortunately that is unlikely to be of any consequence, as she's now running on Biden's policies rather than her own. Posted by Aidan, Friday, 9 October 2020 5:10:07 PM

Dear Josephus,
I could not agree more that governments built on policy create a great nation. Governments built on showmanship and personality might be entertaining for a while, but they do not build a great nation especially when division and derision is thrown into the mix. BTW - President Trump has had a deregulatory agenda which has extended into the laws that protect the United States Nation's air and water. And according to the Brookings Institute there have been 74 actions that the Trump administration has taken to weaken environmental protection. In addition to deregulatory actions by the Trump administration to support the fossil fuel industry, the US nation's core environmental laws that ensure clean air and water and protect sensitive lands are also a focus of regulatory tollback. Joe Biden proposes a different course for environmental protection with addressing climate change as a central part of his platform. He has established an ambigious goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Achieving this goal would require reversing the current course of rolling back regulation, along with new legislation. I guess it all depends on what's important more important and the kind of country and society one wants to live in. Posted by Foxy, Friday, 9 October 2020 5:18:51 PM

TRUMP MAY WIN, IF HIS SWING STATE CAMPAIGHNING IS SUCCESSFUL
Trump is risking his Covid-ridden health as America's leader by speaking, without a mask, at crowded meetings in Swing States in the next few days. Although Trump is well behind overall, HE MAY STILL WIN, if he wins over the Swing States: See http://www.thecourier.com.au/story/6958830/has-covid-19-transformed-the-us-election/ of October 10, 2020: [Although] "The most respected poll-trackers [ AT http://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/president-general/national/ ] put Mr Biden on 52 per cent support from likely voters against Mr Trump's 42 per cent, the biggest lead by the Democrat since July." ...Under the American system, the winner needs to succeed in a few states which swing one way or the other. ..."After a couple of strong polls for Joe Biden in Pennsylvania - the state that's currently most likely to decide the election - Trump now trails there by five or six points. "He's down by about seven points in Michigan and Wisconsin, meanwhile. "Those states, along with Minnesota, Maine and New Hampshire - where Biden has also polled strongly lately - suggest that Biden is winning back some of the Obama-Trump white working-class voters who flocked to Trump four years ago." plantagenet,
So what are you telling me? That I've done my dough? Posted by Mr Opinion, Sunday, 11 October 2020 3:22:55 PM

No. Biden will probably win based on current polls.
But the US's unpredictable Swing State dynamic (written about above) doesn't totally exclude the chances of a Trump win. Posted by plantagenet, Sunday, 11 October 2020 3:59:47 PM

Californian Democrats have passed a Bill to make paedophilia legal to accommodate the LGBT community. California's controversial Senate Bill 145, which would reduce penalties for sexual relations with minors, passed both legislative houses last week and now sits on the desk of Gov. Gavin Newsom (D).
According to State Sen. Scott Wiener, who authored the bill, the current law discriminates against the LGBT community. The left say PEDOPHILIA is a sexual orientation, that should be protected under LGBT laws. Posted by Josephus, Monday, 12 October 2020 10:38:32 AM

During CNN's town hall on climate change Wednesday evening, Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) said she wants to ban fracking and reduce the amount of red meat that Americans eat, as part of her $10 trillion plan to save the planet.
"There's no question I'm in favor of banning fracking," Harris said, adding that, if elected, she would take executive action on "day one" to prohibit fracking on public lands. "We have to just acknowledge that the residual impact of fracking is enormous in terms of the impact of the health and safety of communities." Posted by Josephus, Monday, 12 October 2020 11:29:22 AM

Josephus,
And what age limit are they suggesting in this proposed legislation? Or, as you imply, open slather pedophilia ? Joe Posted by loudmouth2, Monday, 12 October 2020 2:49:09 PM

Above post is my opinion.
For cases involving a young adult and a minor where vaginal intercourse took place, a judge has discretion whether to place the person convicted of statutory rape on the sex offender registry. The judge does not have any discretion when the case involves anal or oral sex. SB 145 would eliminate automatic sex offender registration for young adults who have anal or oral sex with a minor. Instead, a judge would make the decision, just as they do now in cases involving vaginal intercourse. SB 145 would apply only to cases involving minors between the ages of 14-17, and an offender within a 10-year range. Posted by Josephus, Monday, 12 October 2020 6:57:30 PM

J osephus,
Sorry, my English is only ordinary, I don't understand some of what you are writing. In fact, I'm still in the dark over what you're complaining about. I think I get it: it would be still illegal in California for sexual relations between people, one at least of whom is not old enough to care for a family ? Around sixteen or seventeen ? Is that it ? Hi Joe(lm2)
Agent "Josephus" from ARIZONA's main objective for "writing" and "complaining about" this California legislation is to try and connect it with Kamala Harris, a Senator for California. This is another veiled piece of propaganda/fake news in the Campaign to make Trump Great Again. Posted by plantagenet, Tuesday, 13 October 2020 3:23:27 PM

It will pit Pence’s years of mature Vice Presidential experience against Kamala Harris’ skills as a prosecuting lawyer and State politician.
The debate will be 90 minutes long, divided into 9 segments of 10 minutes, chosen by the moderator, Susan Page (of "USA Today").
Due to rising Debate Covid worries the candidates will be separated by plexiglass.
If it runs similar to the 2016 VP Debate http://youtu.be/LZpHW4DYcu4 Pence will be comparatively considerate.
Based on this 2019 Democrat Debate segment http://youtu.be/J1OvDB_wavI Harris will be incisive, on the attack.
The debate will be followed on SBS by a quick analysis of debate performance.
