The consequences of FAM for Australia are indeed dire.

I would include mandatory jail and deportation for non-citizens. Also black listed for travel to Aus forever. Citizens with duel citizenship would have their citizenship removed.

Should stop playing the 'nice guy' in relation to this offence and get really tough. It is not accidental but a deliberate action, there is no excuse.

HenryL,
All the Govt authorities need to do is to treat shifty foreigners & shifty Australians with the same contempt as they treat their own pensioners & victims of crime !

HenryL.,

Parliament has passed measures to make food imports
to Australia safer, with authorities to get new powers
to stop unsafe items at the border.

Legislation cleared Parliament last year - more than
a year after being introduced to Parliament - prompted
by a 2015 hepatitis A outbreak which infected more than 30
people.

According to the link given below the measures will
allow authorities to hold food at the borders and
importers will have to ensure the food they bring in is
safe or face hefty penalties including 10 years in jail
for some offences.

One of the requirements will be that they have international
recognised food safety controls in place throughout supply.

Foxy,
The information I used came from an ABC news article currently shown. A link to this article did not work, so I will try again.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/rural/2019-02-15/foot-and-mouth-disease-detected/10812602

Basically it refers to findings of FAM in meat samples. It does not say if the samples tested were from legal imports or attempts to illegally import by travelers.

However the resultant FAM would be devistating what ever the means of entry.

Given the importance to us, I believe that our laws should be the harshest in the world. I see on border control TV programs that the travelers usaully claim ignorance which is not good enough

People smuggling fruit and veg get a fine and warning, you and I would be treated harsher for using a phone while driving
Not as openly hostile as you seem to be to other races but these folk need big fines some prison
