Everywhere one goes there are Black Friday sales; is this a fine old Aussie tradition that I've missed in the past or is it an imported sales ploy that we will have to endure for the foreseeable future?

It doesn't have to be black, or any other colour Friday for them to have a sale.
I use a particular joint pain treatment supplied by a vitamin company. At least twice a week, & mostly more often, I get an email announcing yet another sale with huge discounts. I think they had a Black Friday sale too, but the prices remain the same, only the rhetoric changes. One of my remote control aircraft suppliers site had so many things, [3000 was quoted], that their search function totally collapsed, & I could not find any of the few things I wanted. Another had increased last months prices by about 20% before offering a 25% discount for Black Friday. They also have a Cibber Monday sale. Is that something new? Ever heard of Christmas, Easter, mothers day, fathers day, black friday is one of them
And it works, like mad days at every town prices drop, probably after being raised, and shoppers shop Posted by Belly, Monday, 26 November 2018 11:47:22 AM

Is Mise,
I don't care what they call it or why. I've just done most of my Christmas gift-buying and it's been great. Quite a bit of savings - especially with LEGO sets for the grand kids. I've also found competition in book-shops. If you look around - you can find some amazing discounts on the same titles depending where you shop. $35.00 in one shop - $25.00 in another for the same item. As for LEGO? Over $150.00 dollars in one outlet, and $75 in another. It pays to hunt around. Posted by Foxy, Monday, 26 November 2018 12:01:57 PM

Is Mise,
It's an American thing that, thanks to the internet, has gone global. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Belly, No it's not like the other events. People buy stuff FOR those. Whereas Black Friday is merely a day to buy stuff ON. Posted by Aidan, Monday, 26 November 2018 1:46:15 PM

It's "black" for profit , not in the red and smart retailers double their prices . Like oil , buy from Saudi princes for $3.40 barrel , add freight , sell for anything you like , Australians are stupid beggars and pay for Thanksgiving for Massachusetts and Virginia , NSW.

It's a shopping day 'the day after Thanksgiving' in the US, similar to our Boxing Day sales the day after Christmas.
The first recorded use of the term 'Black Friday' however, was applied not to holiday shopping but to financial crisis: specifically, the crash of the U.S. gold market on September 24, 1869. Two notoriously ruthless Wall Street financiers, Jay Gould and Jim Fisk, worked together to buy up as much as they could of the nation’s gold, hoping to drive the price sky-high and sell it for astonishing profits. On that Friday in September, the conspiracy finally unraveled, sending the stock market into free-fall and bankrupting everyone from Wall Street barons to farmers. Yes black Friday exists, it harms no one other than those who pay too much or spend too much
Changing it is as likely as American Turkeys calling for an earlier thanksgiving day Posted by Belly, Monday, 26 November 2018 5:30:29 PM

Change is not likely , there's Hallow'een , Thanksgiving and next is Independence Day which gives us the date for the Republic. And a song about rockets and stars.

I've been saving hard all year so I could splurge big time at the Purple Tuesday Sale, but unfortunately to my horror the wife has raided my little green Piggy Bank and blown all my dosh at the Yellow Monday Sale. Well there is always the Pre-Xmas Sale, the Xmas Sale, the After Xmas Sale, the Boxing Day Sale, The New Years Sale, the Sale between the Boxing Day Sale and the New Years Sale, and of course the Sale you have when you're not having a Sale. Has anybody got anything for sale, I'm desperate, haven't spent in hours, thank god Ebay is still open!

Go to Google Images & type in Aboriginal doctors & count how many are truly indigenous.
I don't mean those who claim to be indigenous only those who are. Posted by individual, Wednesday, 28 November 2018 6:44:45 AM

And now look for those who are part indigenous.

And look for those on Friday.

There is one more reason Aussies should remember Black Friday.
We should never forget Black Friday, or those Aussies who lost their lives. The Black Friday bushfires of 13 January 1939, in Victoria, Australia, were among the worst natural bushfires (wildfires) in the world. Almost 20,000 km² (4,942,000 acres, 2,000,000 ha) of land was burned, 71 people died, several towns were entirely obliterated and the Royal Commission that resulted from it led to major changes in forest management. Over 1,300 homes and 69 sawmills were burned, and 3,700 buildings were destroyed. It was calculated that three-quarters of the State of Victoria was directly or indirectly affected by the disaster. The Royal Commission noted that "it appeared the whole State was alight on Friday, 13 January 1939" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Friday_bushfires It's curious how none of you Aussies clued onto this one. They've turned a day of national tragedy into a shopping holiday. Silly semantics, changing and adopting words. If none of us know or remember this tragic part of Australian history; - If it's not in our collective memory then it's no longer part of our history, right? Our culture is PC now, just like all Western nations; And as a part of that culture 'Black Friday' is a day for spending and for corporations to count their riches. As a side note: Try doing a Google search for 'Black Friday'. They state it is on 'Friday, 23 November 2018' They also state that "The earliest evidence of the phrase Black Friday applied to the day after Thanksgiving in a shopping context suggests that the term originated in Philadelphia, where it was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic that would occur on the day after Thanksgiving." Did our naming of Black Friday come first and is Google incorrect? Does the name belong to us and our national tragedy and should it not be used as a shopping holiday? Finally what happens if Google commandeers our holidays? - Could they not hypothetically also turn 'ANZAC Day' into a US retail sales holiday as well? Hey Belly,
"yesterday was red Monday! we comrades celebrated the take over of Victoria". I'm going to pretend you didn't say that; - Lest I subconsciously start hoping for another Black Friday to cleanse your state and purge it of all foreign and progressive influence. The ANZAC holiday is taken by Yanks and Google as a US Victory.
"In a letter to her mother dated November 28, 1942, a young unnamed Australian woman married to an American described the “frightful” riot that became known as “The Battle Of Brisbane”. ... At the time, thousands of American soldiers were stationed across Australia,." Posted by nicknamenick, Wednesday, 28 November 2018 8:28:50 AM

Hi Comrade Belly,
No I didn't miss out, I picked up a personally autographed photo of our fearless leader Uncle Joe for only 10 million rubles, which is worth about 2 cents Aussie. It reads; "Having, great time on holidays in Stalingrad, dated Xmas 1942!" P/S "Not sending Adolf a Chrissy present this year, the dirty stinker!" Better late than never. Also got an Email from the gang down at the Kremlin, it reads: "Congrats comrades on glorious Communists victory in Australia on Saturday! Australia Saturday, the rest of the world next week. Love and kisses on both cheeks from Vlad, Leon, Joe and all the Lads at party HQ in Moscow. P/S "How is Comrade Bill doing in Aussie Capital? Next year we rename Aussie Capital, Shortengrad in honour of Comrade Bill, after big victory in Aussie Revolution. Posted by Paul1405, Wednesday, 28 November 2018 8:53:31 AM

//Did our naming of Black Friday come first and is Google incorrect?//
No. //Does the name belong to us and our national tragedy// No, it belongs to the Scots and one of their (many) national tragedies. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eyemouth_disaster Or the Yanks, and their stock market crash. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wall_Street_Crash_of_1929 Or indeed, to any nation that has ever had some tragedy befall it on a Friday. //Finally what happens if Google commandeers our holidays?// It will make a nice change from Hallmark doing it? I dunno, mate, you're the one who likes playing with your crystal balls. Why don't you tell us, because we're all dying to know. No, really. //Could they not hypothetically also turn 'ANZAC Day' into a US retail sales holiday as well?// I very much doubt it; it would be about as effective as trying to convince Australians to go shopping to celebrate the Boston Tea Party or Guy Fawke's Day or Bastille Day or something.... it's their history, not ours, so nobody cares. Toni Lavis It is blatantly obvious you are avoiding replying to a lie you made before. So here it is again.
Your credibility has just been reduced to ZERO, this will be of interest to others when they become involved in a debate with you as he has already proven to be wrong. Toni Lavis On Friday November 16th you posted Quote. "Why does the Daily Mail bother printing this crap? And why do people accept it as gospel when it's obvious bollocks?" In response to a media report that said "Nauru's President Baron Waqa told The Australian that life on Nauru is much cheaper, allowing refugees holidays to Fiji, healthcare, free housing and jobs." I replied to you with this response. "If it is a lie I guarantee it will quickly be called out in the media, or by the refugee advocates if they do you are right, if they do not it is you who is talking crap. To be reviewed in a few days to determine who is right." It has now been 12 days and not one article or media release calling out the article as being false or misleading, so it is evident it is you who are wrong. While we are on the subject, you conveniently missed this one as well.
Take responsibility for your comments don't just run away, as stated before your credibility now is ZERO, who can believe what you say. Toni Lavis Quote "Bail is a ridiculous and offensive notion" When it comes to making stupid comments without first thinking about all the implications you get first prize. 1st You don't seem to take into account the notion of innocent until proven guilty. 2nd The prisons and police watch houses would be full in one day if every shoplifter, petty thief etc was locked up till their appointed court date. Any crime where a penalty notice could not be issued. So how about thinking about it for a while and come back with a more reasoned comment. Posted by Philip S, Wednesday, 28 November 2018 9:16:15 PM

" it's their history, not ours, so nobody cares." But the tide is flowing towards Oz Thanksgiving , with a bit less religion thrown in.
However it's not with Indigenous gratitude, there are US websites on Amerindian Thanksgiving which include raised finger and vocabulary like "Hitler . terrorist". The US has 7 million wild turkey who are very grateful and out-number Amerindians. Posted by nicknamenick, Thursday, 29 November 2018 5:04:40 AM
