A lot of focus is put on economics in many countries. Would society be better off without dollars?

Or would it be a situation with no sense?

Nathan, you forget that money is simply a form of currency that is used to trade with and currency has been traded well before BC, depending which view you take on creation V evolution. So there is in fact, and for that manner, never will be any such thing as a community without money. It just may not be in the form of dollars and cents as we know it.

Provided we have some physical means of exchange it will be OK.

The thing we must fight tooth & nail against is a move to all electronic recorded exchange.

If we allow that, 1984 is actually upon us.

Dear Nathan,

It would be great to live without money as we waste such a large chunk of our life, time and efforts around issues of money, but if other people are involved, then it requires lots of trust.

Such trust can only exist when the whole community shares strong common values and goals.

It happened in Israel's Kibbutzim, when all members shared a combination of fervent Zionism and Socialism. As this is no longer the case and their children no longer shared those values, today's Kibbutzim became almost like ordinary privatised villages.

So sadly, I can't see this happening again in any large society of say over 100 people.

Yes, if you can find enough people with strong convictions like yours and no desire for children, then forming a monastery together can be a great idea.

Coincidentally, I just finished reading a short essay reminding me of Labor Left wing lunatic and disgraceful person, Jim Cairns. That idiot had the idea of doing away with money and replacing it with bartering. He made Barnaby Joyce look like a genius. But, like Barnaby, he couldn't keep it in his pants either, as people of my generation will remember.

It would be nice if such a community could exist. (Without being a very controlling dictator like environment). The second question though is what would you be willing to give up to live in such a community. Some people live their lives homeless. It's not money free, but for such a lifestyle there is a cost. I'd assume there is something we'd need to give up to be in a community without money.

I'm not a fan of money. I wish there were other options to get by.
