Going Home "The soldier above all others prays for peace, for it is the soldier who must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war." Douglas MacArthur "It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance." Robert F. Kennedy "We sleep safely at night because rough men stand ready to visit violence on those who would harm us" Winston Churchill Posted by onthebeach, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 6:44:22 PM

Just what can an individual do?

Peace is the absence of war, to which end I will play my part.

The focus cannot be on peace. That becomes mealy-mouthed and peace at any cost. Cowardice and concessions that encourage tyrants and forget their victims.
We don't need the UN's self-pampering knobs having their soirees pay for by others and lecturing us on peace. There is always ANZAC Day and other days as sobering reminders that peace has to be fought for by good men and women every day and by the best means they can. While that requires vigilance and action, it does not always mean arms, but it always requires courage. Anyhow, some music to listen to and remember a time when our family members and community volunteered to take up arms for peace. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSMuTm649Hk Posted by onthebeach, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 10:05:18 PM

//Just what can an individual do?//
He can be peaceful. Given that the more warlike people around these parts tend to be geriatrics who prefer to sit around getting aroused by the sight of younger men marching off to get shot rather than joining the fray themselves, it's hardly an onerous task. If everybody did it - and kept doing it - we'd all be much better off. Given that war is more effort, more expense, and more likely to result in death/injury than the alternative, I fail to see why some people prefer it in the first place. Just barking mad, I guess. The cost/benefit analysis certainly doesn't stack up. Posted by Toni Lavis, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 10:08:13 PM

That's just it Toni, we can't all be peaceful, not while we have a religio-political system such as Islam in our midst.
The "Religion of Peace" won't allow peace except on its terms. Posted by Is Mise, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 8:34:04 AM

Well my first thought was sarcasm.
I'll stop murdering and kidnapping people, stop bombing people and public places, stop abusing friends and family on facebook etc. I'll stop cold calling people just for the fun of harassing them in their own homes, I'll stop my involvement in domestic violence and victimisation of women and children, mistreating pets and victimising minorities and the elderly on the streets and my support for violent religious extremism. I'm prepared to do all of these things for you NathanJ, but only for today ok, because tomorrow I'm going to have to go back to my evil compulsive ways... Congratulations, you've changed the world. Of course I don't actually do any of those damn things in the first place... UN blah, blah, blah. Sorry Nathan it just smells like BS to me; but trust me to be suspicious of everything. It seems like its a 'token gesture' to proclaim 'We're good people', when in truth, war is the norm the other 364 days a year. If you want a peace movement, start one and support it the whole damn year. Why do you think they were so scared of John Lennon? This is just a controlled narrative that claims 'we're good people'. - At a time when we just bombed and killed 80 foreign Syrian Repulican Guard troops with white phosphorous. Sorry for ruining the party, I know you all mean well. I don't cause the world problems in the first place but I'll try to do something nice ok, something 'positive to create peace on the planet', as you so kindly indicated you'd like me to do. There - you really did change the world. Happy now? Posted by Armchair Critic, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 9:21:37 AM

"Let's set the record straight. There is no argument over the choice between peace and war, but there is only one guaranteed way you can have peace--and you can have it in the next second--surrender."
R. Reagan during the great "Time for Choosing" Speech 1964. We all want peace. The issue is what we are prepared to give up to get it. The next paragraph in that speech: "Admittedly, there's a risk in any course we follow other than this, but every lesson of history tells us that the greater risk lies in appeasement, and this is the specter our well-meaning liberal friends refuse to face—that their policy of accommodation is appeasement, and it gives no choice between peace and war, only between fight or surrender. If we continue to accommodate, continue to back and retreat, eventually we have to face the final demand—the ultimatum. And what then—when Nikita Khrushchev has told his people he knows what our answer will be? He has told them that we're retreating under the pressure of the Cold War, and someday when the time comes to deliver the final ultimatum, our surrender will be voluntary, because by that time we will have been weakened from within spiritually, morally, and economically. He believes this because from our side he's heard voices pleading for "peace at any price" or "better Red than dead," or as one commentator put it, he'd rather "live on his knees than die on his feet." And therein lies the road to war, because those voices don't speak for the rest of us." I suspect the China politburo has made the same estimation of the democracies. Swedish example of peacefully capitulating to a 'peaceful'(sic) invasion,
<‘Swedes Must Integrate With Migrants’ Says Government-Backed Multicultural Propaganda 19 Sep 2016 A charity backed by the Swedish government has launched a campaign denouncing the assimilation of migrants and telling natives to “integrate” with foreign “cultures and languages”. [Video of campaign] “It’s time to realise the new Swedes will claim their space” an ad insists, describing the Nordic nation as a “safe space” for migrants and concluding: “There is no way back. Sweden will never be like it was.” The campaign is called “The New Country” with a website appearing alongside the film, arguing that residents should adopt foreign “cultures” and “languages”, rather than expect new arrivals to become Swedish. The charity behind it is Individuell Människohjälp (IM), which translates as Individual Relief. However, they go by the English name ‘Swedish Development Partner’ and say they are dedicated to “fighting and exposing poverty and exclusion”. IM is an official member of the government-backed Swedish Fundraising Council (SFC) and Swedish news source Fria Tider claims that it is a recipient of taxpayer’s money.> http://tinyurl.com/gmud6mu Swedish feminists, they refer to themselves as 'Hens', their gender neutral choice, are furiously adopting Hijabs in solidarity. Maybe not such a bad idea to hide the squirrel armpits and leg re-growth that would put Blackberry weed thickets to shame. Posted by onthebeach, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 12:46:04 PM

Re, Swedish feminists adopting Hijabs in solidarity.
Leftists wouldn't see that as non-PC and therefore despised, cultural (mis)appropriation now would they? It must be getting very complicated for the Leftist 'Progressives'(regressives) - who wouldn't recognise real Left if there was a large DMR road sign, neon-lit, showing them the way. Hi there ONTHEBEACH...
What evocative words you've quoted from; Messrs MACARTHUR, KENNEDY and CHURCHILL. All of whom were great leaders in their day. Posted by o sung wu, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 1:21:40 PM

Dear Nathan,
The question was raised: "Just what can an individual do?". You may be interested to find the answer to this age-old question in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, verse 2.35: "In the presence of one firmly established in non-violence, all hostilities cease." - http://yogasutrastudy.info/2014/01/03/ysp-study-group-sutra-2-35 "Ahimsa brings peace from others: For one who increasingly experiences the natural inner peace of a non-harming attitude, others give up their hostilities or aggression in return. It is an automatic process, which we have all felt when in the presence of a truly non-violent person." - http://www.swamij.com/yoga-sutras-23545.htm#2.35 Posted by Yuyutsu, Thursday, 22 September 2016 12:08:07 AM

Jude Law - Peace One Day Ambassador
This magnificent day held on the 21st of September each year and recognised by the United Nations, is something we as humans should all be proud of and take action upon.
What will you be doing? Lazily sitting on the lounge, watching more terrorism and targeted killings and violence on your TV set, or doing something positive to create peace on the planet?
