Dear Hassie,
Don't be disheartened. In politics you never really know what's going to happen next. Same as betting on The Melbourne Cup is tricky at the best of times. The link listed below tells us that: "Malcolm Turnbull's Coalition Government is facing a desperate fight to hang onto a majority in Parliament. While Bill Shorten and Labor look set to fall short of being able to form even a minority government. They have staged an amazing come back that has again high-lighted the volatility of modern Australian politics." What just happened is explained by the following link: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-07-03/election-results-what-just-happened/7553916 Posted by Foxy, Sunday, 3 July 2016 4:15:19 PM

the two losers were Malcolm Rudd and Bill Shorten. Congrats Pauline it looks like you picked up Liberal votes.

Dear Runner,
I congratulate anyone who was able to snatch away seats from the two dinosaurs, even Pauline, but there is no reason to rejoice: the sombre fact is that the two big bullies still have a clear parliament majority between them. Posted by Yuyutsu, Sunday, 3 July 2016 5:59:30 PM

The Liberal Party that is famous for its three word slogans;
'Stop The Boats'... 'Jobs And Growth'... is it time for a new one "BRING BACK TONY". A shallow divided party that the Liberal Party is, does not deserve to govern our country! We deserve better. I said on this forum in 2013 that Australia needed 3 years of Abbottism, to understand what its like. They experienced it in all its glory and they didn't like it one bit. The smoke and mirrors trick of putting up a glove puppet in the form of Turnbull has failed. The electorate seen through that ploy, and have delivered a strong rebuke, loud and clear. "Don't play us for mugs!" Should Turnbull limp home and form a minority, or at best, a slim majority government, there is nothing more certain than the knives will be out, and a destabilizing challenge to Turnbull will come sooner rather than later. Should it be Abbott, or someone else what are you thoughts? For me if it has to be, then Abbott will do just fine. If that was to happen, my advise to Labor and others would be, "Don't put away your election posters just yet." A new 3 word slogan for the Liberal Party; "CRASH AND BURN" Posted by Paul1405, Sunday, 3 July 2016 6:29:38 PM

Yes hasbeen if Turnbull does not stand down he will be pushed, whether or not they form government is a side issue.
Step one was always to return the libs, if this happens, step two will be to get rid of him and his liberal wets and return to grass roots as you say. No more of this gay marriage rubbish, they need to get on with addressing the real issues that matter. I too say a big bravo to Pauline. Posted by rehctub, Sunday, 3 July 2016 6:33:19 PM

Firstly, let me say Lol!...Snort...and Hohoho!
Secondly, how graceless was Mal's petulant speech last night! Thirdly...what did he expect, going into an election with a one point plan to give billions to big business - and a trite slogan of jobs and growth? Fourthly, it's totally unsurprising to see the butcher and the runner praising boneheaded racist, Hanson. Posted by Poirot, Sunday, 3 July 2016 6:53:24 PM

Butch, I love it!
Lets return to some good old fashioned conservative Abbottism! Once we have kicked the crap out of the homosexuals, gays, poofters, dykes and lesbians. Let get right into it, and do some serious head kicking reffos, wops, spicks, butchers, darkies unemployed, and most of all the towel heads! Don't forget the towel heads. Sorry. that was a typo when I included the butchers in there, it wont happen again. God save the butchers. sorry, do apologist, I don't want nice people mistreated, and butchers are very nice people, not too sure about bakers and candlestick makers, we'll add them to the list just in case. What do you think? The rabid right will be around later to extend the list. Nothing like a united country, is there. Posted by Paul1405, Sunday, 3 July 2016 6:58:02 PM

Talk about karma. HAHAHAHAHA
The liars knife their leader after years of vilifying labor for replacing rudd. Now they have been given their just desserts by the Australian people. A hung parliament is exactly what they deserve. The liars party is so divided I doubt they or mr harbourside mansion will last a year. Already the rabbots supporters are gunning for the top hat. So funny. I hope Shorten gives them exactly the same treatment they meted out to Julia Gillard. Sickened to see, and blame malcaymans completely, for the return of the redheaded redneck. Wonder what sort of sleazy deals lay in store between the liars and that grub hansen. Well done Labor and Shorten. A very credible effort to say the least. Firstly, I congratulate Pauline for winning her Senate seat. Her courage and persistence has paid off and there is no doubt she will act in Australia's best interests as she has always done.
Now she might even be able to put immigration back on the political agenda where it should be. Bob Hawke colluded with the Libs not to debate immigration as they were scared of the issue. No win for them. Immigration is the big issue that both major parties will not discuss, but ordinary people do in pubs and clubs. Posted by Banjo, Sunday, 3 July 2016 8:51:41 PM

*the electorate has left the liberal party in no doubt of what we think of Turnbull, & his mates.*
Well not really, Hasbeen. The swing against the liberals has been around 3.7%, so a tiny fraction of the population. Included in that, is the conservative old farts, who think that Tony should be in Govt, so put in their protest vote. Included in that is the little old ladies who were conned by the Mediscare fraud campaign. If any company made those kinds of fraudulent claims about their products, they would most likely be dragged before the courts. Clearly integrity is a meaningless term to the Labor party. Sadly the implications of such a small number of voters are much larger, so now we are back to unstable Govt and little gets done. I think the Conservative old farts have just shot themselves in the proverbial foot and if they dream that Tony leading the libs will get public support, they are going to need alot more pain to wake up to reality. You obviously didn't see John Safran's documentary on SBS last week. I suggest you do (it's still streamable from SBS On Demand). Pauline Hanson's ceased being antiAsian and denies she ever was! It also reveals how antiIslamic parties are cooperating with Islamic parties.

Well there you have it. Two people who are not afraid to call it as it is. The lefties hate them for it, they can't control them by calling them names like racist, but the public love them for it.
Go you mavericks, Pauline & Trump. We & the smarter Ozzies have achieved the first objective, the disgusting Turnbull is gone for all money. Now we have to re-establish the Liberal party as one that decent people can vote for. It is so revealing that the commentators were trying to find any reason but Turnbull for the Liberals dreadful showing. What a little man he has proven himself to be. Shows what bloody awful judgement they have, after they were fawning all over him for months. Who ever is going to lead it, they had better get an injection of backbone before they start. The peanut gallery will be hurling insults the moment they perceive someone capable of doing a real job of running the country. Posted by Hasbeen, Monday, 4 July 2016 12:16:52 AM

Ain't the rabid right in a lather! No pretense of stabbing each other in the back, its full on, stabbing front on, side on, head on, is the norm! The mouth piece of the crazy right Andrew Bolt has been in full cry. Oh! the pain, Oh! the shame, calling for Turnbull's head. Turnbull is out this morning with his begging bowl in hand, pleading with the cross bencher's, please throw me a crumb, I beg you.

Paul, why do you get so defensive about issues like gay, when I never at any stage suggested we bash gays, or anyone else for that matter. I don't even hate Muslims for crying out load, although I do believe Australia is no place for Islam. It just seems like as time goes on, all you have to contribute are attacks based on assumptions. Get a grip mate!
The fact is Turnbull was found to be a dud within weeks of taking the top job. In fact some including Hassie already knew this. Rather than focusing on the real issues, he sat back a said literally nothing and allowed Shorten to run what was literally an unchallenged smear campaign based on lies, lies like the privatisation of Medicare and $50 tax break for big business. The Medicare lie is now a police investigation, little good that will do, and the $50 billion tax break was something like a ten year (more than 3 terms of gov) plan. A plan that first had to pass through parliament. The other point is that the whole anti Pauline Hansen issue could backfire big time for the majors as they will be on the attack from the get go. What they have to understand is that people are not stupid, and both majors have now proven to be duds having collectively made a mess of this country for three consecutive terms. The only way out of the mess we are in is for the libs to form government, replace Turnbull on day one, then work with the likes of Hansen to return this country to its grass roots. No more fuss about gay marriage, stop bring passengers in with nothing to offer, address welfare and the ridiculous 100 YO indigenous waste and work on the removal of Islam. The best three candidates for this are Morrison, Dutton and Abbott. The labor party has no one that could do the job. Time to remove the kit gloves and call a spade a spade. Butch.
When Australia has to rely on the unintelligent Pauline Hanson to give it political direction, then its time to pack up and leave. There are a number of intelligent people on the right of politics. Julie Bishop for one, there are others, but the three you name Morrison, Dutton and Abbott, are mediocre at best. My reference to extreme conservative attitude to gays etc was metaphoric, there are other ways to bash people other than physically. Divisiveness is a trade make of the extreme, be it left or right. Your threads are mostly designed to attack others in society you perceive as undeserving, be they coffee makers, trolley pushers. people your see as inferior to yourself and your own standing in society. If you have to say "I don't even hate Muslims" then it indicates you have doubt, and you have to reinforce your insecurity towards Muslims. Posted by Paul1405, Monday, 4 July 2016 7:36:14 AM

Oh Shriek!...it's a Medicare Lie!
You righties sure have a glass jaw. Remember the the truckload of lies upon which the Fabulous Abbott got himself elected in 2013...the scare campaign - $100 roasts, etc. Here's what Abbott said on the eve of that election: "No cuts to education, no cuts to health, no change to pensions, no change to the GST and no cuts to the ABC or SBS" under a Coalition government." All of it lies. In reply to Kevin Rudd's assertions that the Coalition would shut Medicare Locals - Abbott quickly shot back: "We're not going to be shutting any Medicare Locals." After the election, Abbott shut "all" Medicare Locals. On Medicare this election, it's clear that the govt was gunning for it from the very start. The latest round of white-anting all set to start of July 1... The govt has frozen rebates for six years forcing many GPs to end bulk billing. Twitter was full of people posting photos of notices from their GPs indicating exactly that....even applying to pensioners and concession card holders. Same goes for pathology and x-rays - bulk billing ending on July 1. It's hilarious for the govt to be bellowing loudly about a "Mediscare"...when they've done nothing but undermine it since they won office. How about their $1.2 billion cuts to the aged-care sector! Look at Turnbull's stupid campaign with no plan except to say "I'm the man with a plan". The "plan" consisted of a $50 billion tax cut to big business!..plus the words "innovation", "exciting" and "agile" being played on a constant loop. That's it folks! The wash-up is that Mal thought it was enough for people to vote for his magnificent self - so he didn't bother with actual policies that might entice ordinary folks. Here's a good analysis:
"Malcolm Turnbull has been leader of the federal Liberal Party twice – once as opposition leader, the second as prime minister. On both occasions, he has blown it. He has not been the victim of outside forces, nor an ambush, nor terrible luck. He has inflicted the damage on himself. The narrative he and his Liberal deputy Julie Bishop tried to get up on election night – that the near-disaster of the result inflicted on their government at the nation’s polling booths was down to Labor lies about Medicare – is not convincing. This excuse goes to Turnbull’s real problem: he’s not a very talented politician. By focusing on Labor’s “Mediscare” campaign, he was as good as telling Australians who shifted their vote from Liberal to Labor that they were gullible dills." "The question is: how can someone who has had designs on becoming prime minister for decades, a man of commercial and academic accomplishment, with friends and connections in all corners of power in the land, well-read, well-informed, long untroubled by the need to make any more money, keep making so many unnecessary mistakes?" "Here was a man who looked every ounce a prime minister in the old patrician style: 60-ish, well-preserved, untroubled by the world around him, self-confident, articulate, pledging to reduce the temperature of politics. For the so-called progressive voter, he was the Liberal that Labor voters believed they could love. For Liberals, he was a smooth operator, just the type of accomplished manager they desire as leader. He turned out to be a policy ditherer. Within four months, voter disillusionment set in. It turned out that he did not appear to have a comprehensive plan for the Australian people apart from his headline innovation policy, which most voters assumed would not involve them. As a retail politician he turned out to be dreadful. He was tightly controlled during the campaign because he is not easy with people; he is more Paul Keating than Bob Hawke." Etc... http://theconversation.com/enigmatic-turnbull-creates-his-own-misfortune-and-will-be-forever-diminished-by-it-61378 Posted by Poirot, Monday, 4 July 2016 8:23:47 AM

Although it has to be said...that "Mediscare' excuse will quickly fade into oblivion as the far-right of the Coalition stalks Turnbull.
All you fans of the far-right on this forum are in for so much fun. All your heroes will be out in spades baying for Turnbull's hide. And one assumes that Abbott and Credlin (they're a double act) will be back at the helm before you can say "Um...didn't we already do that?" We'll have the flags back again - phew!...and the weekly fear events where Tones gets to tell you about the latest teenager to be banged up for a few months before he's released with dropped charges...Hanson will be yodelling in wings about the nasty Muslims (because she's kept up with the times and ditched her concentration on "Asians")...she's a full tilt populist loon - and one can see why she's so popular around here. rehctub - if you're going to spend a goodly amount of time praising this woman, perhaps you can learn how to spell her name...just saying. "The best three candidates for this are Morrison, Dutton and Abbott...." Oh yes!....Lol!...they are a fairly accurate representation of this govt's best talent.....innumerate, blathering, sadistic and cringeworthy. Loverly.... The rant about medicare being the blame for the libs dismal numbers shows there is a gigantic blue going on in the lib ranks. They are just likely to install Abbott as new leader, and why not. This would cause a gigantic move on the streets and a new election.
Dutton Morison and bishop and will all get the chop if Turnbull keeps the leadership. They are swinging voters when it comes to leaders. The Senate will be even harder to please , like Abbott said if the legislation is any good it will pass the senate. So much for a DD election, the backlash is going to be felt for quite some time to come. It may cause another DD election. What a mess these clowns have created, Turnbull is out selling his backside to find a number or two. There could be another upset yet if the postal voters favor Labor 13 seats to go. Of course we're all assuming the Coalition will fall over the line.
Interestingly, as it stands the official numbers on the AEC website currently stands at seats won: ALP 71 - LNP 67 http://vtr.aec.gov.au/HouseDefault-20499.htm Posted by Poirot, Monday, 4 July 2016 9:52:15 AM

Little wonder it's close. The LNP wears the odium of necessary curtailing of pension "entitlements", super changes, and other excesses. Labor would have had to, and may yet be the ones that do, make these unavoidable reforms.
In a backlash, The country swung towards maintaining middle class welfare in these uncertain times, and gave warning to any prospective government, "hands off our teats!" Posted by Luciferase, Monday, 4 July 2016 10:22:27 AM

When you look at it the Labor has already won with 17 seats changing hands and more to come. Shows how disappointed people are with the Lib’s . Jobs and Growth can’t they find something other than 3 word slogans.
Where I am it’s Labor for 20 years straight in both state and federal. You could say things are very stable. The Lib’s have nowhere near won this election as yet. Turnbull must be counting green votes To say he can form govt; Just like Abbott he will put his backside up for sale to anyone at all. If he loses this he will be out on his ear. The CFA complaint came to nothing, Turnbull needing to put some mud on the unions all fell off, the only CFA members that were seen were lib voters. A stupid idea interfering in an issue that is a matter for the state. The CFA matter had to come to a head and the vic PM done just that. The result of 3 years of inaction and a directive from the FWA. The Vic PM was endorsed for his actions. Posted by doog, Monday, 4 July 2016 10:59:26 AM

Another feature that arose is the vote for the parochials with no national interest at heart, just selfishness for whatever their states can gain.
I put NXT in this category. As kingmaker it can wring a sweet deal for SA at the expense of everyone else, whereas major parties must govern for all. I don't believe any of the NXT guff about its national interest at all, nor those who voted for it. The case exists for an NXT type party for each state, interested only in that state's interests, further splintering the vote and making Australia a looser federation without a national heart. Country, my country, we apologize to our children who will pay the price for our selfishness. Posted by Luciferase, Monday, 4 July 2016 11:43:52 AM

Dear Luciferase,
I spit on your "nation". What you have is one group of bullies wanting to control a whole continent and impose their will over its 24 million people, so they tactically try to convince people who live 1000's of kilometres apart as if they have some "nationhood" in common with people they are never likely to even ever meet. That is sick! Looking at the particular case of Xenophon, the commonwealth has brought South Australia economically to its knees by introducing international trade-agreements which might have been good for other states, but were disastrous for SA (later they cry about GST and welfare flowing to SA as a result). People and communities deserve and should be able to pursue their own lifestyle, not a lifestyle dictated from 1000-3000 kilometres away. While I cannot see South Australia being the first to exit the commonwealth, it is quite likely to become the second after Tasmania (with the rest to follow) - especially if the Liberals decide to punish Tasmanians for their vote, not long after they will be surprised to find the island conducting a referendum to exit the commonwealth. I watch with pleasure how, due to infighting within the national LibLab party, none of them will be able to wield absolute power. Yet let us not be euphoric: the road is still long since they still hold a majority in parliament and could at any time resolve their internal differences if they wanted to. Well I'd be happy if they gave Tasmania away, so they stop sucking on the WA tit to keep afloat and finally learn to stand on their own two feet! We send 4 billion a year in GST alone to the East and land up keeping around 30c in the Dollar. Much of that money is what keeps Tasmania going. It is well known amongst any intelligent voters and political commentators that if the holy, mad Abbott was still in charge of the Liberal ship, Labor would have romped it in.
As it is, the sobbing Abbott lovers (mad far-right tragics) spat the dummy big time and supported crazier people like Pauline Hanson. Yuyutsu, it's not the international trade agreements that were disastrous for SA, it's the government's sustained economic (mis)management in general. Our interest rates and the value of our dollar have been set too high for SA, and the government has not run a big enough deficit to compensate for that.
SA used to address that problem by setting wages lower and ensuring the cost of living was lower to compensate for the lower wages. But the state government's influence on the cost of living has declined, while the Commonwealth's supplanted much of the states' powers on industrial relations. And before anyone points it out, yes of course I know the government doesn't directly se the value of our dollar any more. But they make the policy decisions that result in the market setting it too high, and they could use a sovereign wealth fund to reduce its short term value but they choose not to. Poirot deliberately misconstruing a businessman's wry satire.
Of course business people are exasperated by the games played in Canberra. It is a no-brainer that it is affecting employment too. Didn't politicians argue that they deserved those swell pay and entitlements, beaut super too, to attract the best of the best to aspire to political office? Ms Galah'd led by accepting higher pay than both Obama, the President of the US and the PM of the UK. Now at a relatively young age she is entitled to solid gold conditions for life all paid for by the taxpayer and regardless of her falling into other taxpayer paid roles where she can attract added benefits. Is there any wonder that the public are tipping populist, moralising bullshysters out so often? At least Abbott walked his talk: he cared about Australia's borders, was concerned about the economy, lived with Indigenous, played an active part in volunteering and had commitment to a better Australia. Not pushing any politician, but Tony Abbott was far closer to being a statesman than those who have their hands out now. The big sleepers are employment and immigration. The big two WILL surface if Australia has to go back to the polls, where it really will be a bloodbath for all three, LNP, Labor and Greens. Posted by onthebeach, Monday, 4 July 2016 3:42:26 PM

Not pushing any politician, but Tony Abbott was far closer to being a statesman than those who have their hands out now." Lived with the indigenous? I suppose hiring planes to take your business buddies, doing a bit of hammering, setting up tents with state-of-the-art communications to keep-track of your overseas deployments - and then nicking off early - could be seen as "living with the indigenous" "The Prime Minister arrived at Gulkula, the site of the annual Garma festival, on Sunday and has been sleeping in an army tent, along with other ministers and a team of bureaucrats." http://www.smh.com.au/federal-politics/political-news/tony-abbott-leaves-east-arnhem-land-early-to-farewell-troops-20140916-10hu49.html#ixzz4DQ0XwSWF Booking motel accommodation for your entourage on an indigenous visit - then not taking it up or paying for it - not so much. Whoops! - we did pay for it eventually. "Taxpayers charged $37,000 for empty hotel rooms on Tony Abbott's Torres Strait trip" http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-10-23/taxpayers-pick-up-bill-for-empty-hotel-rooms-torres-strait-trip/6879716 Most of Abbott's dealings with indigenous people would come under the heading of self-promoting stunts....with a hefty amount of tax-payer funded travel tacked onto it. Yada, yada, yada...border control was all part of his "watch out folks, they're coming to get you!" spiel...along with the flags and terror alerts. I'm sure he was concerned about the economy...so it's odd that his mob had a fun time making it much worse. Posted by Poirot, Monday, 4 July 2016 4:25:59 PM

I imagine you would of been among the cheer squad when immigrants flooded Europe only to end up in many rapes, cheering the breathing tax when pensioners were forced to pay more to heat homes and cool homes and obviously champion child grooming courses in the name of safe schools. No Runner, you are nowhere near the 'average population'....or maybe only in your wildest dreams. The majority of the population support abortion rights, women's rights, same-sex marriage, gay rights and the right not to believe in imaginary gods. You are so out if the ordinary that it isn't funny.
Your bestie Abbott was the original part of the Liberals downfall, hence why a majority of his own party voted to boot him out. Who can ever forget the mad 'knighting' of a Prince Phillip of England? He was a loony toon, who is still being emulated by other loons from the far-right madmen of that party. They deserve to lose this election... Posted by Suseonline, Monday, 4 July 2016 7:46:44 PM

*How can Turnbull remain PM with 50% of AU going against him . Labor started out 21 seats down. The Libs have lost their momentum,*
Hang on, the swing was 3.7%, hardly huge, but mattered in terms of seats. Fact is that the conservative side of the liberals who are still chanting Tony Tony and voted against the liberals, egged on by Bolt and others, just shot the liberal party in the foot. Add in the Mediscare campaign, including 22 full time union staffers who for months targeted marginal seats and were scaring little old ladies, gives you 3.7%. Meantime half the Australian population are clearly happy with Turnbull. Bolt is already calling for Tony to be returned. Sounds like they need more pain to learn. Yeah you may be right Susie. The majority of the population could of been dumbed down like you only to think in a tiny narrative. No sane person could watch a baby torn apart and allow it in the name of womens rights. No one with any medical knowledge would also promote sodomy and any one with half a brain would see that a child is much better off with a loving dad and mum. Only a dumbed down regressive could hear of a man calling on his god, naming his god, killing in the name of God and then claiming its nothing to do with that god. The only thing that puzzles me is how you could give yourself the name progressive. Oh well the power of self interest.

Yes Yabby, if Malcolm pulls it off it'll be well done.
He deposed a leader who would have led an election debacle, made hard decisions disaffecting even his own voters and put up unpopular but necessary measures as his election platform. If he wins he won't be beholden to his right, nor to expansive debt and promises of the magnitude of Labor's. I see all this as good, and Bolt (right), Shorten (left) calling for his head as idiots. Winning is winning. If he succeeds, and with good governance, he may well increase his party's majority at the next election. If he wins. Posted by Luciferase, Monday, 4 July 2016 9:07:05 PM

PS, his Senate reforms saw no seats won by micro-parties, but deposing Abbott brought Pauline out of retirement, so folks like runner and Hasbeen have someone to lead the hard right view.
PSS Even if he wins by only one seat, I expect him to pursue union thuggery that's costing us all. Posted by Luciferase, Monday, 4 July 2016 9:17:28 PM

The rabid right are trying to make some semblance of sense out of this political disaster the conservatives have suffered. For them the message is clear. The electorate is crying out for the messiah, the anointed one, they scan the far right horizon in the vain hope a new Hitler will appear, could it be Gerry Harvey, no he is only a John the Baptists, preparing the people for the real messiah, who is yet to come, one who will deliver them from the evils of the progressives and others they despise in society, and help Gerry flog a few more Korean made TV's while he's at it, will give Gerry's business a boosts. They hoped Abbott was such, but only to be disappointed, now it]s a woman, could she be the one? The fish and chip shop lady herself, Pauline Hanson, back from the political graveyard to lead this happy band of rednecks into the promised land.
Poirot, you have to remember politically OTB is a middle of the road average punter, he told us that himself when he came to the forum some years back. Your not alone, sometimes even I need reminding of that fact. Posted by Paul1405, Monday, 4 July 2016 9:26:14 PM

Not just Muslim immigration - let's not forget that he's also none too fond of Asians. So apparently the 'average' Aussie has similar antipathy for gooks, chinks and other assorted slopes, or they wouldn't have voted for him. Is Mise, I fear you may be confusing average Australians for deeply xenophobic Australians. Average Australians are the ones that care about the content of a man's character; Hanson supporters are the one that care about the angle of their eyes and the tone of their skin. Beach, I understand your jocularity as you bask in the momentary glory of a Hanson victory. Did you work hard on the campaign? I'm sure you joined in the deserved celebrations on Saturday night, goose-stepping, sieg heiling and toasting the new fuhrer, until the wee small hours of the morning. What position do you hope to occupy in the new regime 'Minister for Internet Propaganda'? I forgot, you can always run that Citizens Militia you are so fond of. I'm sure Pauline has openings for all her loyal subjects from the forum.
Toni, please don't be so hard on Is Mise, it was only last week he enjoyed a chop suey take away from down at the Golden Dragon. Heck, he was even known to have partaken of the occasional kebab in his younger days. He has watched 'Lawrence Of Arabia' on telly, twice! He loves Arab people, like Peter O'Toole. I do believe he even has a Sammy Davis Jr LP somewhere deep down in his record collection. I ask you, how more egalitarian can you get than good old Is Mise. Ar the underachievers are out in force, free medical, free education and free health for ever. Well im going to let you all into a little secret, THEY ARE NOT FREE, OTHERS PAY FOR THEM ALL. GET IT!
The election shows that those who pick up the slack and pay the bills have had a gut full of being told to keep working hard, while we either piss your money away or give it to some underachiever or even better, some invitee with little to nothing to offer. Be warned, WE HAVE HAD A GUT FULL. We are sick to death of the grubs wanting everything for nothing, then complaining that we dare do such a thing as claim some tax relief in the form of negative gearing. You lot had better hope like hell that labour does get in, because if they don't, you are in for the shake up of your lives because those of us who fund this waste fest are about to revolt. Have you got a white horse for Pauline to mount? Its all happening.

Settle down, there.... And just what do think Magnificent Mal will be capable of after this drubbing. He'll be hanging on by his finger nails. We are going to revolt, who is we. Does that mean Butch and Pauline. It is going to be an oppressive place to start from. Butch first thing to do is put out the cash only sign. Just be careful of where you get your fresh stock from, they have to keep records as well . Maybe get some road-kill in just to confuse the numbers.
What a balls up this election is , this is going to be the most hostile senate in history. Mal did not read the tea leaves to well. Abbott will be in raptures over this, after all he was going to win this one. The SM bloke has gone quiet again, probably licking his wounds and other things. There is something of a serious nature about this election, Abbott may just try his luck again. Now that would really tear then conservatives and liberals apart. I can see another election coming up very soon, probably March if not before Xmas. Australia has run its race with this voting system. We need a republic and a whole new voting system. Labor have been caught red handed as political shills, for publicising huge lies as part of an organised scare campaign and involving union bosses.
Shorten's reaction when caught out? More lies: 'not part of the national campaign', 'not so sure he knew about it' etc. What is infinitely worse is that all of Shorten's Labor prospective parliamentarians and shadow ministers went along with the lies, as did the Greens. No surprise at all for politicians who use 'Progressive' as a blind for their belief in International Socialism and Greens who hide their Trotskyism behind a thin veil of environmental concern that is immediately dropped after the election. Young voters would be advised to remember the fraud and Shorten's false concern for their welfare that was only an election roughhouse tactic to win. Shorten and his equally unethical and unprincipled 'win whatever it takes' shadow ministers are first accountable to the many honest people who vote Labor believing what the leaders say. That it has all been a complete fraud to get some greedy, self-entitled career politicians into the Parliament will NOT be going down well in the Labor heartlands. Cynical Shorten and ors have wilfully destroyed a Labor tradition and credibility that others who were giants before them worked so very hard to build. As it is, no-one and not the Labor politicians themselves believes anything that Shorten and his shadow ministers say now or in the future. The truth will always play second fiddle to their selfish personal advantage. Posted by onthebeach, Tuesday, 5 July 2016 11:03:48 AM

Never has the accepted mot that oppositions never win, but governments lose, been more accurate. No one has won or lost, yet, but the praise heaped on Bill Shorten is absurd. Shorten did nothing. He didn't have to. Turnbull was gloriously humiliated for the arrogant prick he is - by voters other than the rusted on to parties clots. Nothing to do with Shorten, who has learned nothing, and is still intent on big spending and big debt.
Turnbull was clearly seen as public enemy number one by voters without any party loyalty. The man is a fraud. No two ways about it. He has ensured that we will have a crippled government, with all the misery and uncertainty that entails, for the next three years (if we don't have to be subjected to another election). His ignorant fiddling with the Senate has produced an even more chaotic arrangement which will make it virtually impossible for any government to get legislation through. Everybody thought that Mr. Successful Businessman was just the bees knees for running a country. The fact that he has always been a Leftist, a George Soros, in twisted mind, didn't matter to the dummies. Turnbull is a very self-interested and selfish man, with an ego the size of a shipping container. Even in his election speech, he blamed his failure and humiliation on everybody but himself, even down to a 'lie' which was just another legitimate election tactic (and who is to say he did not intend to hand Medicare to his rich mates?). Turnbull is s truly dreadful man who the Coalition must rid itself of ASAP, along with his partners in the knifing of Tony Abbott, who, I hope, will not be tempted into wasting his time again trying to lead that bunch of back-stabbers. *Turnbull was clearly seen as public enemy number one by voters without any party loyalty.*
Ahem, Turnbull gained more votes than anyone else, so clearly is still the most popular politician in Australia. Shorten's vote was in fact down by half a million, so he does not have that much to crow about, other than losing any integrity with his dirty tricks campaign. No wonder people have such a low regard for politicians. Yesterday's BRW carried a story about the Tech start up community lamenting Turnbull's position, as they highly value what he has does for innovation etc. Poirot of course does not read BRW so would not know what they actually think, as she is clearly too busy eating popcorn :) Some still don't get it. The public does not want Tony, only a tiny percentage do. Perhaps Credlin should run and speak for herself in politics, then we would not have to watch her operate her puppet from 6ft behind, guiding his every word. Would those be the same Asian countries that are proposing or have already imposed restrictions on the number of expats living there because they might diminish the local culture, or simply look out of place?
Remembering that they already have requirements that ensure that any retirees who might move there must be fully self-financed, have limitations affecting their purchase of a home and so on? I am not a supporter of Pauline Hanson. Australia is a democracy where freedom of speech SHOULD prevail but often doesn't. Thanks to the very people who have made a habit and a politically correct virtue of misconstruing Hanson's meaning to ruthlessly sledge and make a caricature out her to mock. Invariably the worst critics are those with an undeclared interest in siphoning money from the public trough of taxpayer's dollars for multicultural and other grants. Thinking Liberals realise that it was only about 10% of those who wanted to vote against the Turnbull twit, who could overcome their nausea & actually vote Labor. Just 10% this time, but if Turnbull is still there next election, the liberal vote might look like the Greens or the Democrats before them.
Even if the man was not so disgusting, he has proved yet again that with a strategist like him leading, you might as well cut your own throat now, & get it over with quickly. Interesting that the Greens picked up bugger all. With so many disaffected Liberals looking for a new home, this indicates there are only so many fools & ratbags to go round, & as we can see here, most are already Greens. Do you think there is any truth in the rumour that he is a Labor party plant, with intentions to stuff the Liberal party, as the only way to save Labor. If so, he's done very well. She has been elected because all you mad trendies are not listening to what the "bloke in the pub" has been saying for a long time. She will introduce some much needed Non PC talk into the parliament. You keep quoting what she said last time. Know something she was right ! You should travel on the trains here. Tony Abbott, from a couple of indirect contacts I have, appears to be exactly what he projects. He is a member of the local RFS and is just one of the boys as they say. He was spending time with the aboriginals long before he became a cabinet member. The upshot of it all is that it does not matter who wins the election. We are heading for the cliff and the public has put a block under the brake. We have reached the last moments before the Collapse of Societies. Debt is mearly the string connected to the trigger. Yabby,
"Ahem, Turnbull gained more votes than anyone else, so clearly is still the most popular politician in Australia..." The problem with Mal is he was so wishy-washy....so confident in his own charisma and former reputation that he thought that would carry him through. Firstly, voters remember how they were dudded by the Abbott-Credlin govt. Here was a duo who represented their agenda as benign - and when they got in gave it to Oz voters in the neck. Credlin is still bragging that "at least Abbott won an election" - kinda easy if you're so low as to lie your way into govt. How about the ABCC trigger that was used for the DD...never mentioned again until Turnbull's tantrum on the night of the election. Where were the govt's politcies? I mean where were they? No policies except to give big business a $50 billion tax break. How about the "let's stick with this mob for a while"?...what a confident assertion - not. How about Turnbull dangling his brain farts every two days...up the GST, no more funding for public schools, a very fast train... Most of the time, these "suggestions" were gone in a puff of hot air within 24 hours - and nothing replaced them as the election approached. "I'm the man with a plan" said Mal ad nauseam - yet never divulged a plan. * Innovation * Agile * Exciting All empty words that meant nothing. Freezing the doctors rebate and rebates on pathology and x-rays assisted in the attack on Medicare. After Hockey's seeking to implement a $7 co-payment was squashed, they found another even more pervasive way to undermine the health safety net. They've only themselves to blame for people surmisng that Medicare was in their sights. Posted by Poirot, Tuesday, 5 July 2016 4:27:50 PM

Bazz,
"He was spending time with the aboriginals long before he became a cabinet member." Yes he was.... "In August 2012, Tony Abbott did indeed go to Cape York — but it wasn’t for a week or two as Mr Pyne suggests. It was for 2 days. It was a working bee of sorts and some of Australia’s business leaders were taken along to volunteer as well. Photos of Abbott with tools in hand were taken and the myth of Abbott the saviour of the Black man had a wonderful photo op. No problem so far — until you examine the Expenditure on Entitlements paid by the Department of Finance and Deregulation to Mr Abbott for this “Volunteering” trip. On page 12, we find an amount of $9,636.36 taxpayer dollars, spent to fund the hire of a private charter flight for the 2 days." So, was this just a once off? Nope. Not on your life!" "No harm in trying, I suppose, and if you spent the week out in the community helping, it has some purpose, but little use if the status quo is maintained and you ignore the wishes of the people you supposedly assist. Well, there is some harm and it wasn’t for a week. The harm comes in the form of another private charter flight — cost to the tax payer: $32,545.00. Because nothing says I volunteer to help those in need like a $30k ride in a jet. Oh ... and that week or two Pyne talks about? That trip that cost we, the taxpayer, $32,545.00 in flights alone was for just one night!" "Next time an LNP member or journalist drops the “Abbott volunteers for weeks in Indigenous communities”....refer them to these figures. Three days and nearly $45,000 in flights alone — if that’s volunteering, the rest of us are really doing it all wrong." http://independentaustralia.net/politics/politics-display/tony-abbotts-costly-indigenous-community-volunteering,5628 Check out the article - all the transaction details are there. *Firstly, voters remember how they were dudded by the Abbott-Credlin govt.*
Yup some do. A whole other bunch of Tony fans, egged on by Bolt and similar, went out of their way to vote against any liberal who voted to get rid of Abbott. Pauline got their vote. Perhaps Bolt should join the Pauline party. Backstabbing the liberal vote and then complaining about the results, sounds more like pure vindictiveness and now they shot the party in the foot. I remind you however, this election was about Turnbull versus Shorten, not Abbott versus Shorten. *never mentioned again until Turnbull's tantrum on the night of the election.* It certainly was mentioned, you clearly missed it. Also the fact that it was making our Govt buildings 25-30% more expensive. Why do you think the unions invested so much in this election? They want a PM who is captive to them and who owes them, so that they can do as they please, which as we know includes thuggery. *No policies except to give big business a $50 billion tax break.* You were clearly far too busy reading the critics, to bother to understand or read their policy. For the next 3 years, tax breaks would have gone to the 2 million small businesses who employ huge amounts of people and who are held back from growth by cash. Not to big business. Big business would have to wait many years before getting any break. I concede something here. Turnbull was far too honest. He should never have mentioned his long term economic plan as it goes over peoples heads, as they focus on little further than their own back pocket next week. Next they complain that they want jobs... Turnbull was generally positive in this campaign and approached it more like a business man. The critics are saying he should behave more like a seasoned politician, kicking shins and playing dirty. Personally I prefer the honest and positive ones. You clowns just can't see it can you. Turnbull & Rudd are as alike as 2 peas in a pod. Any sensible person could see it when he was playing leader of the republican movement. I find it incredible that after the Rudd experience there are any who can't pick another incompetent dill when they appear.
Yabby it will be a win if the Libs loose. Nothing is more important for the future of Oz than getting him back to his tax haven, & out of our parliament. No country can survive for long with 2 left parties, & that is what we would have had if Turnbull could have secured authority in the party. Now he is obviously a liability, the Libs will have to get rid of him or die. As I've said before, better a Labor government if you are having a left government. At least they will borrow the money to give welfare to all those their policies cause to be unemployed. The hell with it, our kids can pay. Posted by Hasbeen, Tuesday, 5 July 2016 10:32:42 PM

With all due respect Hasbeen, Turnbull is not of the left. He believes in free enterprise, in business, in innovation and all the rest. He is a liberal, as is the name of the party he leads and he was the most popular politician at this election.
Calling him an an incompetent dill won't get you far, as clearly his record is far superior to your record, so perhaps he is simply alot smarter than you are and his record proves it. Sorry but if you throw insults, expect them to be returned if it can be shown to be true. Posted by Yabby, Tuesday, 5 July 2016 11:21:06 PM

Well said Yabby. Turnbull can be called many things, but 'dill' is definitely not one of them. This label says more about the name-caller than the recipient.
Both Turnbull and Shorten need to address the problems that have led to the second coming of Hansen, and of other fringe-dwelling political parties, if they want to do better in the next election. We can't disregard the voters who settled on Hansen and the One Nation party, by calling them bigots or fools. These people are afraid, and Hansen positively oozes fear and insecurity, as she spreads her message of hatred re Asians and Muslims. Hatred can't be beaten by more hatred, so Turnbull and Shorten need to front up to the issues people like Hansen are afraid of, and deal with these problems head on... Given that the final outcome is yet to be decided, I put my view should it be a hung parliament. Who should form government? I am not a great fan of Shorten's, although I have warmed to him a little during the long election campaign, he presented himself much better than Turnbull. The Coalition looks totally divided, with the Nationals way out there, the hard line conservatives digging in with Abbott, and the liberal Liberals in the minority behind Turnbull. Can this divided rabble govern with a minority, or even a slim majority, no way! The Labor party looks far more united behind Shorten. For that reason, should a hung parliment eventuate, I believe the cross benchers wll have no other choice other than to help Labor form government Posted by Paul1405, Wednesday, 6 July 2016 7:12:07 AM

Hasbeen,
I have to agree with Yabby and Suse here. You say... "No country can survive for long with 2 left parties, & that is what we would have had if Turnbull could have secured authority in the party." How is the Coalition "left"? What you are saying is that you wish the Coalition was further right than it is....Abbott, Bernardi, Abetz, et al "right" is what you'd like. The thing is that if Turnbull had had the authority to pull them closer to the centre instead of attempting to go to an election bluffing its way through on its former record, they probably would have fared better. The question is now, can Mal summon the authority he needs to truly lead the party - or will he be overrun by the hard right of the party seeking to reassert its dominance. And it may not be over yet, folks...
"It's the nightmare scenario: both the Coalition and Labor fall short of a majority and then can't secure crossbench support. With neither side able to govern, Australians are forced back to the polls." OH GOD NO. IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE? Yes. If neither side can convince Governor-General Peter Cosgrove that it can command the confidence of the House of Representatives, then a fresh election could become the only means of breaking the deadlock. Bill Shorten reckons the Prime Minister is weighing the idea: "There is a very real chance that Malcolm Turnbull is considering calling a snap election in the mistaken belief that this will sort out his own problems." WHAT A HORRIBLE THOUGHT. HAS THIS EVER HAPPENED BEFORE? Not in Australia, no We've only had two hung federal parliaments in the past 100 years, in 1940 and 2010. On the first occasion, Robert Menzies was able to cobble together a minority government, although the independents later switched sides and gave government to John Curtin. Julia Gillard did better, taking her minority government full-term – with a little "help" from Kevin Rudd at the end there – despite its reputation for chaos. But this time could be different. With both Turnbull and Shorten ruling out deals – and given the ideological gulf between that small clutch of lower house crossbenchers – there is potential for true deadlock. OKAY, GIVE IT TO ME STRAIGHT: HOW LIKELY IS A RE-RUN? All right, take a deep breath. While it is one option on this messy table – Malcolm Turnbull confidant Arthur Sinodinos confirmed as much on election night – at this stage it remains a mercifully unlikely outcome. The chief reason being it's in no-one's interest. Turnbull wouldn't want to risk falling even further – he's made enough strategic miscalculations already and has probably lost his appetite for such high-stakes gambles." http://www.smh.com.au/federal-politics/federal-election-2016/election-2016-the-doover--just-how-likely-is-a-snap-second-election-20160705-gpyvxk.html#ixzz4DZbKXFp Posted by Poirot, Wednesday, 6 July 2016 7:47:33 AM

Hi Poirot,
It is clear to me, in the event of a hung parliament, there is absolutely no requirement for a fresh election now, and any politician who calls one without proper consultation will be dead meat. Providing the cross benchers, particularly The Greens and NXT, give an undertaking not to do the dirty trick the Liberals/DLP pulled in 1975 and block supply in the Senate. In the lower house I think Bandt, Sharkie and Wilkie can work with Labor, providing there is some room for negotiation when required. Even the conservative Bob Katter can be reasonable. Lambie could be cooperative in the Senate, give her some space. Give it a year if its all too hard then call an election. Posted by Paul1405, Wednesday, 6 July 2016 11:31:20 AM

What an interesting result from a frustrated populace.
I really think it will take a return of Tony Abbott as leader to do this thing properly. The Lib's should have been out on their ear. The electorate was all geared up to to a 'Newman' on Abbott's arse and they were stymied by the change of leadership. If Turnbull had been strong enough to stick to his original principles we might have been swayed to give the Lib's another chance. But corporate tax cuts, gay marriage plebiscite and dithering on GST reform cruelled his chances of a clean victory. Let the far right of the party re-install Abbott, then when he is turfed by an electorate (who will never again believe a single word that came out of his lying mouth) their delusions will be exposed for what they are. Dear Luciferase,
You wrote; “I put NXT in this category. As kingmaker it can wring a sweet deal for SA at the expense of everyone else, whereas major parties must govern for all. I don't believe any of the NXT guff about its national interest at all, nor those who voted for it. The case exists for an NXT type party for each state, interested only in that state's interests, further splintering the vote and making Australia a looser federation without a national heart.” I think you might find the Senate was set up to be a States House. Wouldn't South Australian NXT senators who be fulfilling their duty by lobbying for their state as hard as they can? Posted by SteeleRedux, Wednesday, 6 July 2016 1:50:04 PM

Goodness me - what's there to say
Saturday was not their day The voters chose despite the noise To let the pollies know their choice Which goes to show you must be true In what you say and what you do Jobs and growth may sound quite good But with no plan - it's just Kaput! Here's a few more thoughts taken from the web: "The vote is a disaster But giving it to the lunatics is worse. If Malcolm Turnbull does win he needs to be a leader - not a hostage. " " It is hard to negotiate with zealots and ideologues when all they want is bigotry and racism legalised, gay people persecuted and global warming hastened. This has opened up a Pandora's box of resentment and suspicion towards immigrants or suspected immigrants. We can't make the promise of a vote pandering to the interests of extremists. It's weak and dangerous." Posted by Foxy, Wednesday, 6 July 2016 2:08:57 PM

I can't imagine we would have another election any time soon, as imagine the cost of that election to our economy? Turnbull would be a fool to advocate that. What worries me though, is that the ABC political analyst Antony Green thinks that there will either be a very narrow Coalition win, or a hung parliament...and he has been proved right in his predictions many times over the years. Sadly the dinosaurs are still there, but we are so lucky that those fools are paralysed, failing to realise that they won the elections with a large absolute majority in both houses. Hopefully it stays this way so they are unable to govern over us.
In case of a re-election I will still put them last, but I'll be careful to put whichever half that is behind in the polls second-to-last in order to ensure the same result, again and again. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMHnNF2rqpI Posted by Yuyutsu, Wednesday, 6 July 2016 3:32:25 PM

"Wouldn't South Australian NXT senators who be fulfilling their duty by lobbying for their state as hard as they can?"
Yes, by fighting to amend legislation negatively affecting SA. Of course, there is the realpolitik of how Senators wield power versus what is ethical at times. I was really referring to NXT's lower house rep(s). It's their role, of course, to spruick their state's interests in forming legislation. However, in a kingmaker role they can wring a sweet deal for SA over others (such as shifting naval shipbuilding from WA, for example, or squeezing extra funds from the rest of Oz for their pet industries). A major party rep can't do this. In this close run race the electorate sees NXT already maneuvering and thinks of shifting from the majors to parochial candidates next election. Of course, if that election isn't close the strategy will not be effective, but it does look like the days of clear governing majorities is behind us, with more voting in self rather than in national interest (debt reduction being the example in this election, IMHO) Posted by Luciferase, Wednesday, 6 July 2016 4:51:23 PM

If it ends up 76 75 then a speaker has to be provided.
If the XNT can provide the speaker then the 76 can govern. It will take some statesmanship for the NXT to surrender one of their wins. Anyway because of the policies as promulgated by both parties it does not matter who wins, we are committed to an economic disaster as the debt will now never be paid off. The US's $T20 debt will not now be paid either so a really big collapse is inevitable. Posted by Bazz, Wednesday, 6 July 2016 5:59:19 PM

Dear Luciferase,
Just to articulate further; “The framers of the Constitution intended that the primary role of the Senate would be to protect the interests of the less populous states in the federal Parliament by giving equal representation to all states (see Senate Brief No. 9). As was foreseen by some of the framers, soon after federation parliamentarians began to vote as members of political parties rather than as representatives of states. While this has obscured the role of the Senate as a protector of the less populous states, the state-based system of representation has ensured that legislative decisions are not made only by the representatives of the more populous states. The Senate has also assumed greater importance as a check on the power of the government of the day. The framers’ design of the Senate has enabled it to perform this role effectively.” http://www.aph.gov.au/About_Parliament/Senate/Powers_practice_n_procedures/Senate_Briefs/Brief10 SA is one of those less populous states. The original framers saw the major role of the Senate was to protect such a state. From where I sit I see the NXT are playing their part. I'm struggling to see anything unethical in their actions, indeed I would contend they are filling the role as envisaged by the Federating fathers. There of course will be times when the interests of SA does not align with the interests of the Australian population as a whole but then I suspect the traffic is mainly the other way. So when WA was living off largess of the Eastern States, including the proceeds from the Bass Strait oil and gas fields in the 60's and 70's, to the tune of $30,000 per person per annum it was somehow deemed fair and reasonable. Now apparently the rules stink and WA wants them changed to give it more? How does that work and still be fair? Posted by SteeleRedux, Wednesday, 6 July 2016 7:14:29 PM

Again, my reference was to the House of Reps.
However, conservative senators blocking supply was unethical in '75, IMO. Green senators blocking the Malaysian Solution, which had nothing to do with state interests, was unethical IMO. When a Gov't lies thru' its gills to get elected, a la Abbott's outfit, the Senate's action in the last parliament was ethical. The realpolitik of the Senate differs from its stated purpose. The Senate ethic is essentially ignored, as Paul Keating noted, with his "unrepresentative swill" comment. Posted by Luciferase, Wednesday, 6 July 2016 7:50:28 PM

SteeleRedux, I remind you that WA was always an export State. In the 60s and 70s, our exporters and people were forced to buy highly protected inputs and consumer goods to subidise Eastern States manufacturers. So we paid a very heavy price at the time for any assistance received.

There is no need to apologise for not serving "the national interest" and for using all one's available democratic means to protect oneself, one's family and one's group/tribe against the onslaughts of this "nation". Why don't you complain for example about people failing to serve "the google interest"? Perhaps if you are a google employee, then you are expected to serve that interest, but the vast majority of the people who live in this continent (and the islands surrounding it) have never even been asked whether they want or even agree to have anything to do with this "nation" of yours! Either way, people are under estimating the Pauline factor in all of this, because unlike her anti Asian comments, where she was portrayed as a racist, I would suggest the majority are on her side with her call for changes to the way Muslims act in our country. She will have everything, including the kitchen sink thrown at her very early, and if she can get past that, I suggest her popularity will soar. People have had a gut full of their taxes being spent on the likes of illegals and the importation of non productive passengers. BTW Paul, with reference to your comment about Malcom Turnbull having to go, read my posts mate as you will see I called for his head long before the election was called. In fact, I called him Mr Waffle even before the media work up to him. The man is a dud, but at least he has some others behind him who can do the job. Labor has nothing. Pauline Hanson was no more a 'bigot' and probably far more tolerant and accepting of migrants than the Asian countries who believed the Hanson caricature invented by multiculturalists and the mainstream political parties and themselves have very restrictive measures against migrants.
All Pauline Hanson ever objected to was the overly enthusiastic federal immigration policies, numbers that Labor Premiers themselves objected to. She did allude to being 'swamped by Asians'. But in truth if one considers the changes in demographics in her area of Australia, SE Qld, she is right to say that Asians are in great numbers. The 'diversity' tail does wag the immigration policy dog. One only has to refer to the population atlas of Brisbane to come across suburbs where migrant numbers dominate and many either live in a home where English is not the first language of one or more of the parents and children. But again, how any of the Asian countries can call Hanson prejudiced while having far more restrictive immigration and visitor measures in place themselves is a wonder. Although the politically correct ABC would never mention that either. Posted by onthebeach, Thursday, 7 July 2016 9:25:36 AM

They've been calling her a racist for 20 years and we all know how 'effective' it has been! She is back, with more votes than Xenephon and the Greens put together. Hanson is a strong person of great conviction, echoing what a great many - possibly a majority - of Australians think. The ignorant fools who call her a racist - who call anyone a racist - have never graduated from being the schoolyard bullies they were, thinking that it is possible to silence people by calling them names. Who calls islam a country. There are several countries where islam is the dominant religion. Not all islamists are equal. Some believe in sharia law without exception and there are others that believe in a moderate types of Islamic laws. The only thing they have in common is they are said to be muslims. There is no country called islam or muslim . Maybe Runner needs to explain who is calling islam a race of people. A renegade mob is calling itself Islamic state, and they are fighting muslims, but that is as close as it gets to a race of people Islamic state fighting muslims, you have to assume that the Islamic state fighters do not agree with the muslim religion. Why else would they be at war with muslims. There is a definite difference between muslims and islamists. Posted by doog, Thursday, 7 July 2016 10:49:06 AM

Do you think it might have something to do with what we see happening in France, Belgium, Britain, Germany, Norway, Sweden and that we have more than 20 moslems banged up in Super Max because they had intention to kill tens of Australians ? Do you think it might have something to do with killing a man just knocking off work because he was a civilian employee of the police ? Do you think it might have something to do with the attempt to murder two police in Melbourne ? Do you think it might have something to do with the Bil Al rape gang banged up in Super Max for 30 years. Do you think it might have something to do with the Linde Cafe ? One of the problems for our legal system and for naturalisation ceremonies is that oaths are sworn on the Koran.
There is a clause in it that states it is OK to lie to infidels if it is to the advantage of a moslem. Think what that means in a court of law. Charged with false swearing they can claim the book they swore their oath on permits lying to infidels. Not a bad defence I think. I am sure there are many lawyers that would go along with it including judges. Posted by Bazz, Thursday, 7 July 2016 5:01:09 PM

There is clearly no place in Australia for Islam.
Islam is clearly a religion that among other things harbours extremism and violence toward all no believers, and the Islamic leaders themselves are powerless to prevent the radicalization of its followers. As Australia is a peace loving nation, we simply can no longer allow such religions to be practiced in our country if we wish to retain our peaceful enjoyable lifestyles. We have a unique quality in Australia, that being our remoteness and the fact that we are an island and we should be using this uniqueness to our advantage and not allow our cultures known to harbour violence into our country. Suse,
You ask how runner, Josephus think about letting non-muslim ME people in as migrants and you claim to know how Pauline thinks. Well it is obvious you have never met Pauline because she has no problem with that at all as non-muslims, from the ME, have proved to be good immigrants, and I cite the NSW Governor as a shining example. Pauline employed Asian staff in her shop and ON has had election candidates of mixed heritage, including Lebanese, aboriginal and Asian. You see Suse the problem is with the muslim culture, not with race. Foxy, The article you quote from is by a lefty writer that worked for 'the Drum' a very biased ABC show. You said it was "more about how Pauline thinks" and yet he admits to having never met her so how would he know. It is all inaccurate rubbish. You should upgrade your reference reading. Banjo " You see Suse the problem is with the muslim culture, not with race."
I am not basing my comments on what Pauline thinks, but rather on what I have personally heard her say. She has said "We are being swamped with Asians." She never mentioned Muslim Asians, just Asians. What are we supposed to think about that moronic racist statement, other than that she has a problem with 'Asians'? If she did employ Asians in her fish and chip shop, then I would imagine they wouldn't be happy with her statements now. She should have stayed in the fish business.... "We are being swamped with Asians."
Well Suse, she never actually said that so your opinion is based, not on what she said, but on what you think she's say if she was the type of person you think she is. What she actually said was " I believe we are in danger of being swamped by Asians." If you bother to check out the context of that sentence (delivered in her maiden speech) you'll find that her problem isn't with Asians per say but with the culture they bring with them and the fact (in her mind) that multiculturalism allows them to remain unassimilated and to dilute the national culture. So not a racist. A culturalist perhaps. Posted by mhaze, Friday, 8 July 2016 5:11:57 PM

Just today there is a report on the ABC website about the Chinese community campaigning against Hansen's racist ideas. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-07-08/chinese-community-launch-campaign-against-pauline-hanson/7581952 You mightn't think that a negative comment about Asians 'swamping' Australia is a racist slur against Asians, but intelligent people understand how they must feel. Perhaps if we changed the words to "Australia is in danger of being swamped by the British", you might understand easier? Posted by Suseonline, Friday, 8 July 2016 6:40:43 PM

Suze, 'racist' is a very over used word nowadays, as so many confuse racism with realism.
If I were to say "allowing Muslims in to Australia increases our risk of terrorism", I would be right, however I would also no doubt be called racist. I truly believe that both the brexit vote and the Pauline vote have come about through governments ignoring too many people for too long and pandering to the likes of Muslims. Even our own Pm threw a party for the Muslim leaders and I will bet had we not been allowed postal or pre polling votes, the outcome would have been different. I think there is a real movement towards reclaiming Australia and I think this is just the beginning. If Trump gets in it will be a whole new world Posted by rehctub, Friday, 8 July 2016 7:33:30 PM

Sue,
Tell me, if Hanson wasn't guilty why was she jailed? Perhaps the Court of Appeal was bribed? Perhaps the Porcine Aeronautics are really happening!! Posted by Is Mise, Friday, 8 July 2016 9:04:32 PM

I once worked among a Christian political party, and a large part of its members were Iraqi and Syrian Christians who warned us that Islam would rise in Australia, as did the converted Muslims coming to Australia to escape a threat of death for conversion. You would find similar among Rise Up Australia in Victoria.

Banjo, to say "Pauline employed Asian staff" does not prove her not to be racists. A white American from the deep south could have said "I'm not racists, I have 150 Negros sleep at my place every night...down at the olde plantation, that is."
Hanson's statements on race show what kind of person she is, not her employees, and not even her candidates, but what she has said. Posted by Paul1405, Friday, 8 July 2016 10:37:40 PM

Mhaze,
"...dilute the national culture." What's the national culture of Australia I wonder? Judging from the likes of threads like this, it's slagging off other cultures, races and religions and extolling the virtues of a simple-minded loud-mouthed ideologue with a penchant for self-promotion disguised as "speaking up for the little people". Hanson would say anything to get a vote...as does Trump....thick as two planks, brazen and emboldened by the publicity, she'd happily drive any wedge between society, stir up violence...as long as she's the centre of attention. Just like Trump, she'd quite happily be the catalyst of any amount of chaos as long as she can be the figurehead of the movement. Posted by Poirot, Friday, 8 July 2016 10:58:16 PM

Suzie, Foxy, et al, all this points up a serious problem.
If I complain about the upsurge in Chinese migration two angles can be placed on it. First I am a racist because I used the word Chinese. Second I am someone concerned about immigration rates. The abuse and opprobrium put on me by the left and a whole group of people who take on aires of we are superior to you you nazi ! Secondly the Sustainable Population people will say I am a hero for being game to bring the subject at all at risk of 18c. So you can see the politically correct era prevents real problems from being discussed. I agree the situation is different with moslems. Firstly because Islam is not a race. Secondly there is a very real risk factor to the life of Australians. There are hundreds of real world examples of that risk. We ARE at war, and it has been going on for more than 1000 years. The moslems have a damaged genome and a higher than normal rate of children in need of special education and other health problems. There is a heap of very real problems which you do not want discussed. Posted by Bazz, Friday, 8 July 2016 11:07:09 PM

Islam is a belief system.
One they believe renders any other belief system, like OUR LAWS and WAY OF LIFE null and void. If their belief system conflicts with our belief system, then they are not compatible with our way of life and not suitable to settle in our country. People get sucked in by their emotions. I mean, who didn't get disturbed seeing that little boy downed at the beach, but, the truth is, every single terrorist started out life as that cute little boy/girl.
I can see why Pauline was tagged as racist 20 years ago, but, this is 20 years later and our world has completely changed. There is nothing racist in stating the truth. I can see Pauline being a strengthening force in Australian politics in years to come, provided she manages to dodge the bullets, and im not kidding. Hopefully our other pollies will wake up to what a mess they are creating in this country with their lacklustre approach to immigration and welfare abuse. rehctub,
"I can see why Pauline was tagged as racist 20 years ago, but, this is 20 years later and our world has completely changed. There is nothing racist in stating the truth." Ah now let's see what's changed. Oh that's right...Bush & Co cooked up the intelleigence and the facts and fixed them around their policy to invade Iraq. Blair and Howard went "Hoorah!" and they all pitched in to destroy a country and destabilised an entire region - emboldened Al Quaeda and spawned ISIS. The whole region erupts into armed conflict approaching the depths of hell..some guy decides to get his family out, pays for passage, the boats sinks - and his tiny son washes up dead on a beach in front of a photographer... And a whinging petite bourgeois butcher in Australia says: ".... every single terrorist started out life as that cute little boy/girl." While I understand that right-wing zealotry is the main game on OLO these days...some of you do it better than others. Posted by Poirot, Saturday, 9 July 2016 7:52:42 AM

Yeah Josephus the arrogrant regressives always seem to know more about Islam than ex Islamic terrorist. No amount of proof ever diverts them from their flawed narrative. Like Poirot they just revert to labels the very thing she accuses others of.

Lol Runner, no one goes on about Islam more than you do on this site, so you are the pot calling the kettle black.
Being a soldier for Christianity, are you just trying to paint another religion 'worse' than yours in order to feel big about yourself? Posted by Suseonline, Saturday, 9 July 2016 11:45:18 AM

Hanson and Abbott they deserve each other A far right lot got how many votes. Butch TTTb hanson and abbott Thats four.
The far right dictatorship just like in Singapore, now that would be great. Certainly a big demand for Ghetto's that could create thousands of jobs. Anyone that sees sense in that sort of govt; needs to be hung. Posted by doog, Saturday, 9 July 2016 12:08:19 PM

Ah yes exIslamic terrorist.
Yes most of them are ex. They were killed by ISIS while trying to get their families out of Fallujah. ISIS must have some sort of attraction for females. They are always trying to make excuses for them and blaming us men. Very strange, perhaps they fancy the forced marriages because their husbands not being moslems must give up their women if they are grabbed by the right hand. Bit strange that, but that is the Koranic rule. That is discrimination against lefties, haha pun unintended. When it comes to the crunch what's the betting they will want us men to protect them. Ok Poirot, so what was Hawks excuse to invade Iraq back in the 90's, remembering the word 'terrorist' was virtually unheard of.
You people just get sucked in by emotion. You also forget that he underlying cause of these people's wows is their uncontrolled breeding. And so long as there are fools who will continue to get sucked in, they will continue to breed. Grow a back bone for god sake. Posted by rehctub, Sunday, 10 July 2016 5:58:57 AM

rehctub,
"Ok Poirot, so what was Hawks excuse to invade Iraq back in the 90's, remembering the word 'terrorist' was virtually unheard of." Iraq wasn't invaded by Hawke (or anyone else) in the 90's. Iraq invaded Kuwait and were repelled from there by a Coalition led by the US. On the contrary, the word "terrorist" was already well-known by then...although not in any particular association with Iraq. "You people just get sucked in by emotion." Which is probably preferable than getting sucked in by the ill-informed, prejudiced rantings of a limited intellect. "Grow a back bone for god sake." What you've got, rehctub, isn't "a back bone"...it's what yawping entitled folks like you substitute for one. Posted by Poirot, Sunday, 10 July 2016 8:12:14 AM

Poirot, Hawk went to war against Husain. Now if I got the country wrong, big deal, but he still did what he was told by the US, much the same as Howard, Rudd, and Gillard did.
Like it or not, we a tiny fish in a huge ocean and we are incapable of defending ourselves, so when the US says jump, we have no choice other than to say, how high. As for the word 'terrorist', I was more referring to here in Oz. While i'm the first to agree our involvement in the wars has made us a target for terror, it comes a distant second to our stupidity in allowing Isalm into our nation. rehctub,
You get the country wrong... You can't even be bothered checking how to spell their names.... And I'm supposed to listen to your profound wisdom in the subject? Plenty of top level people in Australia were doubtful of the intellignce and advised Howard not to join the US in invading Iraq (at least, according to one Former Secretary of Australian Departments of Defence and Primary Industries & Energy)...apparently these folks were termed " "doddering daiquiri diplomats". Did the people of Indi know they were voting for a liberal. Mcgowan is supposed to be an independent. And she had a liberal going against her. Mirabella. Mcgowan sold her independence to the liberals with out any thought what so ever, as to her voters.

With Sam Dastiyari and Pauline Hanson refusing to observe that winning gov't is a mandate for gov't policy, things look bleak.
The LNP did well to win gov't from where it was before Turnbull took the reigns from Abbott. The knives were out after the lie fest that saw the Abbott gov't elected, and difficult issues were tackled such as super and pensions, while there were no great sweeteners put before the electorate and a maintenance of unpopular savings measures carried over from the previous parliament. If there is no overall agreement on the need for debt reduction by our senators, Australia will wallow. I do not believe our founding fathers expected the Senate to simply be an extension of the House of Reps, voting along party lines, when drafting the constitution. Now, more than ever, some appreciation of this is essential. Posted by Luciferase, Monday, 11 July 2016 8:28:50 PM

...by "debt reduction" I mean along the lines the LNP took to the election and won.
