The vast majority of the 'illegals' as you call them are overstaying tourists who provide for themselves. Any that arrive without valid visa are detained at the airport and are sent back on the first available flight. The overstaying tourists still spend their own money while here, backpackers the same. Family members of existing immigrants are sponsored by their families.

Few, if any, of the plane arrivals have kids that we have to provide for.
