It is very simple, the so-called extremists have the Quran and hadith on their side. So-called moderate leaders cannot win a discussion with the radicals because the radicals are just doing what Mohammed did and what Allah commands.

You're correct of course, innovation is forbidden in Sunni Islam so there is absolutely no hope of reforming the movement, it's just never going to happen and true Mujahideen will kill the liberals and reformers, as they're doing in Iraq and elsewhere.
The Salafists are the fastest growing social movement in Germany and according to the German press they're meeting the refugee trains as they pull in at the stations and taking away unaccompanied minors and young men who have no family or friends with them. They're also taking young men away from the refugee reception centres and housing them in Mosques, Islamic schools and private homes.
Salafists will also on occasion attack and beat up Leftists, Liberals, Gays, Anti Racists and so forth if they try anything in the Muslim controlled neighbourhoods, they actually hate the Left more than groups like the NPD and PEGIDA because of their perceived "atheism" and liberal attitudes.

In some countries it is a jailable offense to even seek out the truth about what happened in WW2, the only reason one would make laws like that would be so the truth did not come out.
