Jardine, what utter rubbish you write. You are a slave to your political correctness.

Of course nations protect citizens from predation. Nations are a collective of people. People form nations. When the nation is threatened, the people of the nation defend the nation. You are so brainwashed by leftie rhetoric that you can't remotely see this basic fact.

Let ISIS and all the other factions get on with writing their own history; we should do nought about them until they stray into our backyard.

We have several hundred ISIS extremists living in Australia; our own back yard. What do we do with them? If ISIS controls Iraq then it controls 4% of the Worlds Oil supply and that will affect our energy supply.

No matter how many personnel and weapons we are going to throw at Iraq (and that number of 275 troops to guard the US embassy is only the proverbial camel's nose under the tent), there is no amount of external force which can resolve the internal Shiite/Sunni conflict, save the Iraqi people themselves.

There has to be an internal dialogue and reconciliation between both groups to get the violence to stop.

However, the hugely autocratic and tone-deaf national Shiite leadership of the Al-Maliki government (the US-sponsored puppet), will do everything in their power to stop that from happening, including calls for the US government to bomb their own citizens.

Before the invasion, occupation, and de-Baathification in Iraq, there was no problem between the Sunni and Shiite Muslims in this country, nor were their problems for the Christian members of that society.

The explosive popular revolution in Iraq can be laid squarely at the feet of the preceding, and current, administrations. In both administrations, US foreign policy regarding Iraq can only be characterized as an epic failure.

Second, sectarianism is a huge problem even inside the professional Iraqi military. The Iraqi government, and a majority of Iraqis, are Shia Muslims. ISIS is Sunni. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has treated the Sunni minority very badly, which is one of the most important reasons ISIS has grown as powerful as it has. The Iraqi army has both Sunni and Shia soldiers.

And it looks like sectarianism is severely hampering the army's response to the crisis. "It appears that the Iraqi Army is cleaving along sectarian lines," Jason Lyall, a Yale University expert on insurgency, told me. "The willingness of Sunni soldiers to fight to retake Mosul appears limited."

This makes some sense out of the Mosul rout: some Sunni Muslims don't really want to fight other Sunnis in the name of a government that oppresses them.
