And don't forget the biggest debacle of all Campbell Newmman and the corrupt Qld LNP he leads. Why have the right wing Qld governments, past and present, been so corrupt? Is corruption in their DNA? Seems so.
What a disaster for Queensland the past 2 years have been. Posted by Nhoj, Monday, 9 June 2014 1:48:18 PM

Nhoj, we've had the same experience here in NSW, where a corrupt Labor government was replaced by the conservatives, on what was basically an anti-corruption platform. The irony is The Liberal scum buckets are proving to be as corrupt as Labor ever was. With the likes of O'Farrell getting off on a 3 grand bottles of plonk, these wombats have no shame. From a Federal perspective both Abbott and Hockey, as is Baird, are members of the parties NSW 'North Shore Mafia'. A collection of conservative who have their fingers in more than one pie!
Nhoj, if you ask them, they will all tell you they have a divine right to rule, been anointed by god himself. LOL Posted by Paul1405, Monday, 9 June 2014 2:11:24 PM

Advice for prospective candidates can be found in Neil Young's Greendale album, as Grandpa says :

While I might agree with you, the caution I would add is that the career politicians are like this, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kf4nlIEHfaU and Labor isn't alone in that. Posted by onthebeach, Monday, 9 June 2014 3:01:11 PM

What could be more insane that the two major parties consistently selling our country down the toilet and we keep voting them back in.
I'll continue to vote for Clive to break up this political cartel since they only represent private central bankers and not we the people. Posted by Arjay, Monday, 9 June 2014 3:13:41 PM

I hope that the LNP & ALP get a really big fright at the next election with PUP holding the balance of power. Ever since ALP moles have crept into the LNP things have gone wonky.
Can do Campbell has become can't do anything right Newman. Posted by individual, Monday, 9 June 2014 5:30:32 PM

With the best part of 100 billion in debt, they certainly need a change.

*Still, after the debacle of the last six years, nearly 50% will still vote Labor, so what hope is there?*

My youngest, told me after the election she had voted for Palmer, because he was a successful businessman, & we need businessmen to run the place.
She has recently told me she did not know what a d##k head the man was, until he started talking after the election. I think there is a fair chance he might have a shorter run than the Democrats. Posted by Hasbeen, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 1:01:13 PM

Dear Banjo,
I didn't see the program on Channel 7 with the Mike Willesee interview although of course I've heard and read about it. From what I've heard and read though, I don't think that the interview will do much damage to the Palmer United Party. The people who would vote for Clive Palmer and his Party I suspect would vote for precisely the sort of unpolished politician - that Ricky Muir presented on TV. Somebody that the average person could identify with - somebody who didn't have all the glib answers. A hard-working family man - who would understand them and the "real" world. Having said that though, I'm sure that Mr Palmer will take this lesson on board - and better prepare his team for future interviews. The Palmer United Party is just starting out in politics and it will be interesting to see how far they'll get, and how long they will last. It should also be remembered that during the last election - there was a Liberal candidate who had a few stumbles when being interviewed on TV - with his inability to answer questions as well. It all depends on what happens next for Palmer. But I wouldn't write the Party off just yet. Things can change in politics overnight. And at present cracks are appearing with the disgruntlement of people with both sides of politics. Neither side is doing too well. As John Howard made clear at the National Press Club recently - voters will not accept things that they consider to be unfair. And Mr Howard was spot on with that. Dear Banjo,
Here's the incident I was referring to in my earlier post: http://www.smh.com.au/federal-politics/federal-election-2013/liberal-candidates-meltdown-no-surprise-to-tony-abbott-20130806-2rb5a.html Posted by Foxy, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 3:14:52 PM

If you want proof Clive Palmer is full of bull just ask yourself - Where is the new Titanic? Replicating the Titanic was just an exercise in self promotion. Now that he has more air time he's completely forgotten about the project.
Clive doesn't care any more about the little guy than he does about running his resort into the ground. Clive only care's about Clive. We have BIG PROBLEMS if people believe Clive Palmer is the answer. This man is so self-interested he exudes megalomania. I cannot understand how anyone who has ever seen him say anything can actually swallow he drivel and be happy to support his cause. The sad reality is we also have big problems with Labour and the Coalition, and will certainly have a big problem if the Greens hold the balance of power. I wish I had a realistic answer to offer for consideration. Posted by sbr108, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 4:06:41 PM

I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone raise the irony of the Palmer United Party's acronym PUP. Maybe it's been raised before and I just missed it.
"Being sold a pup" (British informal) = to be tricked into buying something that is not worth anything. I'm afraid you've been sold a pup there. I will give Clive credit for probably being cleaver enough to see the irony and laughing all the way to Parliament. Posted by sbr108, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 4:23:08 PM

Only his money keeps the men in white coats away. Bring back Pauline Hansen. At least she could cook. Posted by chrisgaff1000, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 10:11:46 PM

Chris, Hanson could cook alright, she cooked the books and got a criminal conviction! Were you the arresting officer?

Paul1405,
O ye of little faith. She was later acquitted and received over three million in compensation as well as her party election refund monies No I didn't arrest he but I did vote for her. Posted by chrisgaff1000, Thursday, 12 June 2014 12:17:44 AM

<< but I did vote for her>> Chris I certainly believe you would. Her "policies" would be right up your ally!
The biggest danger to PUP is not Tony Abbott, but Big Clive himself, for that who voted PUP, judging by their antics so far I think you have been sold a pup. Posted by Paul1405, Thursday, 12 June 2014 7:13:05 AM

Chrissgaff1000,
You said, "She was later acquitted and received over three million in compensation as well as her party election refund monies". Chris, can you confirm that? My understanding s that Pauline Hanson DID NOT receive any compensation from Qld in relation to her jailing and never received back the electoral funding the government demanded from her. I always have considered this to be the greatest injustice in our political history Posted by Banjo, Thursday, 12 June 2014 9:19:17 AM

A quick Google search reveals: "In quashing Hanson’s conviction the Court emphasized that she would be ineligible for exgratia compensation for her three months of wrongful imprisonment.8 This was based on the argument that “it should be understood that result [quashing Hanson’s conviction] will not mean the process has to this point been unlawful. While the appellants’ experience will in that event have been insupportably painful, they will have endured the consequence of adjudication through due process in accordance with what is compendiously termed the rule of law.”9 This was upheld when Hanson’s quest for compensation was denied by Queensland’s Attorney General in October 2005."

What fun we have, & how simplistic have the greens become.
They have wrapped Palmer in a blanket of love, & to them he can do no wrong. This must be the most dramatic "enemy of my enemy is my friend" cliche that has ever been seen. That the greens, who hate mining, should virtually adopt Palmer as a hero really does tell us what a bunch of posers they really are Posted by Hasbeen, Thursday, 12 June 2014 10:13:46 AM

Hanson simply escaped on a legal technicality!

Paul,
You do like to put spin on things. You could call Hanson's aquittal a technicality or a fundamental issue regarding membership of any organization. the prosecution was arguing that One Nation members were not members, but merely supporters, even though they had filled out membership forms and paid membership fees. It should have been dismissed in the first instance. If the appeal had not been successful, it would have meant that members of other organizations could not claim membership by paying fees. This would affect thousands of people in Qld, like members of Rotary, P&C, sports clubs, RSL and many others. Of course the charges were trumped up and political. Beattie and Abbott colluded on this as Hanson was a threat to both major parties. It worked, as Hanson took a long while to recover from the trauma of jail. Not the same person either. Hanson should be compensated for the wrongful jailing and her legal costs. The electoral funding also should be returned to her. A sorry episode in our political history. More expected in a banana republic than a, so called, democracy like ours. Posted by Banjo, Friday, 13 June 2014 12:11:56 PM

"Hanson simply escaped on a legal technicality!" Paul 1405
Gillard will probably get out of trouble from the Crimes and Misconduct Commission on the same grounds. But that's when a legal technicality is a good thing, right Paul. Posted by sbr108, Friday, 13 June 2014 3:56:28 PM

What a shocking performance and must be embarrassing for all that voted for these Senators at last election. Palmer showed himself to be nothing more than an idiot.
Willisee was exceedingly kind to all. In no way could the interviews be deemed as hostile.
I do not hold the electorate as being very intelligent, but surely Australia deserves better than displayed last night.
Still, after the debacle of the last six years, nearly 50% will still vote Labor, so what hope is there?
