Labor and the feckless Greens imported thousands of economic migrants who swing from the guvvy teats years later. In such numbers that it requires all of the housing services and infrastructure of a new large coastal city each and every year. Those new migrants lob in the already overcrowded capitals, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, but the new services, Centrelink payments and infrastructure are required anyhow and those are much more expensive to supply in already overcrowded capitals.
Given that those who are already here prefer Centrelink and whining about their entitlements to doing some honest work, if the services, housing and infrastructure they require are to be provided, it is up to temporary workers from overseas.
For many year the builders I have dealt with have been forced to rely on overseas workers. It was the same on the farm where we often had to rely on unskilled but willing and trainable foreign students, and grey nomads who always seem up for some work.
The roofer fixing some loose ridge capping for me today employs two men form overseas that he is training. Good pay and plenty of rest breaks too. But he cannot get workers locally who will turn up at 7.00am each day.
The electrician who installed some switches and electrical appliances gave up his fleet of vans because it was no longer worth the hassle and definitely not worth the investment of employing staff.
I could give many other examples, such as in the country where a whole town of unemployed couldn't supply a few willing workers, male or female no problem, to slash firebreaks and tend to cattle grids and fencing. They prefer sit-down money. Yet there were some grey nomads who were grateful for the extra dollars and the farm workers cottages. Amazing to witness grey nomads overcoming rheumatoid arthritis to mount the tractors and their smiles when they quickly master the gear.
Meanwhile in town the many youths on sit down money hurl drunken abuse at travellers and steal from vehicles and trailers left parked.
Australia has changed.
