As much as I don't think Chris Bowen is qualified to criticise the Feds proposal to freeze pollies wages I do agree with him that the Coalition is fooling themselves believing it will please voters.
If they said they'll knock back their salaries to 2007 levels then the voters could smell a couple of ounces of integrity. Same goes for all public servants plus a salary ceiling of $200,000.- for senior bureaucrats. If they think that's not enough for them they're most welcome to exercise their aptitude & expertise in the private sector which would be a boost to our economy.
I'm just so sick of listening to senior bureaucrats bragging about their overseas holidays on Golden Frequent Flier points. It wouldn't be so bad if frequent flier point were only for travel within Australia but that money now goes out of the country. If I had my way frequent flier points should be pooled for the organisation that pays for the ticket i.e. the public service.
I see them every day living off their travel allowances & still saving part of it on top of their normal excessive pay.. Value for money for the australian taxpayer ? Nope !

Tax'Em Tony is on a salary of around half a million dollars per year. He's a millionaire. Last year parliamentarians got a HUGE salary $$$ increase, dollar wise.

Therefore, Tax'Em Tony, after a HUGE dollar increase in the Prime Minister's salary, is now saying he'll make a "sacrifice" in salary for the country. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

Yep, the salary sacrifice that simply is NOT a "salary sacrifice", when taking into account their big salary increase from last year.

No wonder they call Tax'Em Tony ... Toneliar.

Nhoj,
In case you are too young to remember when Howard left office his salary was @ 295.000.-per year. When the destructive Rudd left it was thus.

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/desposed-australian-prime-minister-kevin-rudds-600000-a-year-pension/story-e6freuy9-1225885918379

I still believe that our pollies & officials are immorally excessively remunerated. It simply has gone too far, they need to back-peddle somewhat.
Oppositions are just as gulty as they could vote against payrises but they're too gain very handsomely themselves, that's why they remain stumm till after it's all gone through.
We don't need new taxes, we need the public service pays reduced.

Public stunt, they have just had a massive pay rise under Gillard.

We have a prime minister who gets paid more than the American President.

We have ex prime minister getting an indexed for life pension, Gillard for example over $200,000 per year PLUS other perks.

They should lower there salary.

Just like the illusion in some shops they put up the price 20% or so, then they advertise a sale for 15% or so.

Just an slight of hand trick, the greedy blood suckers will find a way to use government credit cards or some other way to keep there lavish lifestyle at taxpayers expense.

I remember when the last Parliamentarian salary
freeze happened under Mr Rudd, Tony Abbott called
it a political "stunt." What makes him think
that the voters are so gullible as to fall for his
"sharing the load," tactic. I wouldn't mind (and neither
would so many other voters) sharing
the load of their salaries and perks though.

cont'd ...

I forgot to add that people can only be fooled
once - it's time for pollies to stop playing
games - and try honesty instead. And those who
thought that's what they were getting with this
current government are not learning the sad truth!
Liar, liar, pants on fire!

But then Mr Abbott can go to Confessi9on - and all
will be forgiven? Not by the voters - not this time!

Individual, Rudd's just as big an a s s hole as Tax'Em Tony. Glad you agree with me about this. Now individual, what you going to do about all the lies and broken promises from Tax'Em Tony?

They should have a decrease so they are seen as sharing the load, but that would be just to much. Abbott is a fake with an agenda, that is to make himself look like a man on a mission. With the states banned from any debt reduction, and everything from asset sales spent on infrastructure.
The weasel is not about saving money. The latest prediction is to have a 1 % surplus around 2022.
Every promise on the books broken and completely trashed. This man went to an election with fraudulent lies to forward his own agenda.

579 - Quote "This man went to an election with fraudulent lies to forward his own agenda."

You have just described almost every Prime Minister we have ever had.

The only way to stop the rot is if they break any major election promises they are removed from office.
Unless something totally unforeseen occurs.

Philip S,
That all sounds very straight forward but with voters like Australians no-one could ever win an election, the voters are way too greedy themselves. They need a strong Government that tells them what to do & where to go because Australians in general are not interested in the common good if it means putting in an effort. Yes, when it comes to being proud for being born here (wow what an effort) they're up front but ask them to do a little for the country ? No way Mate !

The top end public servants wages are linked to parliamentary wages, so they don't only vote for themselves. To revoke their last increase is to revoke the parliamentarians last increase.

579,
I wouldn't mind getting a public service union official's view on that & also one from the AWU.
Perhaps our OLO economic experts could give us figures if revoking the payrise would be sufficient to do away with the proposed new tax.

Info from
https://au.news.yahoo.com/a/23426739/budget-2014-fuel-excise-to-increase-twice-a-year-in-line-with-inflation/

Quote "For Mr Abbott, who earns about $500,000, the pay freeze could cost him an estimated $12,175.

The secretary of his department, Ian Watt, will take a bigger hit, missing out on a $42,000 raise."

Working on that ratio that puts Ian Whites salary at present at $1,724,846. (one and three quarter million dollars per year)

Sure he will feel the same monetary pain as a pensioner.

Philip S,
This is criminal, it must not be allowed to continue. We need to start pushing for a referendum on how much of our tax dollars they can get their hands on. Not only to we need a freeze, we need to take away some of what they're already getting. The PM should be the highest paid public servant & 300 grand is more than enough. Especially considering the money these people cost us after they leave office & are of even less use to us.
Surely, there are some shifty lawyers who could find a loop hole in public service salaries & start nailing some of these rorters or rather thieves.

probably the first time I have ever agreed with 579. Even more so we can't put all the world on the dole as Labour was, by encouraging all the illegal entries. Thankfully that has stopped.

579, "We can,t employ the world"

Labor and the feckless Greens imported thousands of economic migrants who swing from the guvvy teats years later. In such numbers that it requires all of the housing services and infrastructure of a new large coastal city each and every year. Those new migrants lob in the already overcrowded capitals, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, but the new services, Centrelink payments and infrastructure are required anyhow and those are much more expensive to supply in already overcrowded capitals.

Given that those who are already here prefer Centrelink and whining about their entitlements to doing some honest work, if the services, housing and infrastructure they require are to be provided, it is up to temporary workers from overseas.

For many year the builders I have dealt with have been forced to rely on overseas workers. It was the same on the farm where we often had to rely on unskilled but willing and trainable foreign students, and grey nomads who always seem up for some work.

The roofer fixing some loose ridge capping for me today employs two men form overseas that he is training. Good pay and plenty of rest breaks too. But he cannot get workers locally who will turn up at 7.00am each day.

The electrician who installed some switches and electrical appliances gave up his fleet of vans because it was no longer worth the hassle and definitely not worth the investment of employing staff.

I could give many other examples, such as in the country where a whole town of unemployed couldn't supply a few willing workers, male or female no problem, to slash firebreaks and tend to cattle grids and fencing. They prefer sit-down money. Yet there were some grey nomads who were grateful for the extra dollars and the farm workers cottages. Amazing to witness grey nomads overcoming rheumatoid arthritis to mount the tractors and their smiles when they quickly master the gear.

Meanwhile in town the many youths on sit down money hurl drunken abuse at travellers and steal from vehicles and trailers left parked.

Australia has changed.

onthebeach..,...Its the bogans, or want to be bogans...Or the Ned-Kelly, jail want to be's are Australia's biggest threat. These people are anti-everything's...But that's the white pride they talk about, as they drag their knuckles behind them. See, They don't know any other life stile, thanks to the Governments of the past, so you cant blame them....I remember Australia of the past, it was I time to live, but now.....they are the forgotten people. They try to learn computers, they know the 80's or 70's or the 60's and so on....its the lay back life they know just too well, so have a thought....if not for them...The war veterans, the people that gave their blood and sole for this country.....But now times have changed, as you know.

I keep on saying...AUSTRALIA!....get smaller and smarter..and that's all I have to say.

Origins of Man,
That's what the Abbott Government is working on but first things first, silence the morons within the LNP then get on with it. The parental leave scheme is a massive mistake & so everyone tells us but if they got rid of that now it'd be a broken promise. No win with Australians is there ?
Freeze salaries at the 2007 level & be done with it.

People jump up & down with indignation at Pollies payrises but when there's a chance to discuss it & offer solution no-one seems to be interested. That makes the average citize no better than the pollies. Sad, very sad indeed !
