Dear o sung wu,

You write;

“Good evening PAUL1405...Why is it you feel this unfettered urge or mania to engage in this absurd practice of belittling other contributors on this Forum ? From your obvious symptomatology you seem to suffer from another form of (yet undiagnosed) narcissistic psychosis. I've witnessed some years ago now. Apparently, yet to be described in DSM IV ?

Evidently, you find it difficult to be tolerant enough to standby and observe other ordinary individuals engaging in healthy discourse ? Perhaps if you endeavoured to be a little more convivial with your exchanges with others, they may even begin to take you, and much of what you have to say, more seriously ? Give it a go, young fella.”

I think the general sentiment you have put is quite a valid one and I applaud it, convivial discourse should almost always be striven for.

I do however have an issue about you expressing it here and in this manner.

It is well known that Paul1405 in a member of the Greens.

Let me ask how much your conviviality would be maintained if the title to this post had been “The immorality of the NSW police force” and the opening post included lines like “These people are really disgusting.”?

Then when you went to defend them you were referred to as an “unpleasant bit of rubbish” and the rest of the force as “such scum”!

May I also inquire why the plea for conviviality was not also directed at Hasbeen who, from any fair reading of the thread, is obviously far more transgressive of the boundaries of convivial discourse than Paul1405?

'evening to you STEELEREDUX...

Concerning HASBEEN and his comments that were directed toward PAUL1405, I've no problem with anything he's said. Personally I've always found HASBEEN as one of the most erudite and practical individuals on this Forum. He speaks with a clear, no nonsense, pragmatic approach, which I personally find very refreshing indeed. That said like everybody, I don't always agree with some of his views or opinions, but that is one of the most appealing and agreeable components, of all the constitute elements, that make up this prestigious assembly, surely ?

The police force is always considered 'fair game' on either OLO or this Forum. And I don't have a problem with that. However, whenever an individual launches into some denunciation or speculative criticism of police, I tend to get a little 'dark'. I'll not seek to enumerate some of the more outstanding work of the police, as most people are already aware of that.

From the obverse to the reverse. Like any large 'paramilitary' organisation, where there's often daily temptations, risks, and constant auditorial processes, the members can and do occasionally walk around with a degree of 'attitude' or 'inclination', if you like. Something I've learned over the 32+ years in the job - the general public are your hardest bosses, without doubt !

In conclusion, I find it peculiar that you know feel it necessary STEELEREDUX to provide PAUL1405 with some modest degree of intellectual succour. When all he need do; is mature significantly; manifestly tidy up his vocabulary; and discard the 'log' he chooses to carry around on his shoulder ? Perhaps then, other more genial contributors herein, may become more supportive of his opinions and views ?

SteeleRedux, thanks for your support. About how I see this forums, and forums in general and those who choose to contribute. Many of the threads here are about quite serious matters in society, discussing things often that even include matters of life and death. Contributors are all granted the luxury of anonymity, something to hide behind, their nic their pseudonym. In fact some real people may well contribute under more than one nic' I personally only have one, but could just as easily have say 3 and I could create 3 distinct "personalities" one for each.
As for the forum itself, what is its purpose, what does it achieve, and what are the outcomes. It’s a talkfest, no decisions are made, no conclusions are reached, and it has little or no impact on society. It is basically there for the enjoyment of the contributors.
As for me personally, I’m sometimes amazed at the seriousness some posters display, taking great offence when others, such as me lampoon their pseudonym. It’s not something I engage in much in real life in fact I take my political endeavors very seriously indeed.
I can say without reservation nothing posted on this forum has ever insulted me personally, others can attack Paul1405 as much as they like, but I’ll never feel personally by that, just amused.
Others will see the forum and their role in it differently, so be it. Besides I do like to make people laugh, and this forum at times could do with a bit less stuffiness and a bit more light hearted “tomfoolery”, can act as a reality check for some. So in conclusion I can assure you this Little Green Pixie will carry on his/hers/its merry way,

P/s I thought the piece on Hasbeen/Teacher was very good, if I do say so myself, a bit of wit because Hasbeen failed to actually post a link. The only other bit that could be deemed offensive, which I don’t think it was, was under that, using actual words posted to create a rather cuckoo conversation. The rest of my posts on this have been rather staid.

O Sung Wo, I did a Google on Sung Wo, and I came up with the Sung Wo Chinese Restaurant, all I can say is I love Chinese, give me a pork chow mein any day. From your postings I “understand” behind the pseudonym is a policeman of many years service, your posting under your nic; reflects my pre conceived notion of how such a real life policeman of many years service would think and therefore post. I do not wish to offend you personally but if I have, I have.

o sung wu, I am flattered you call me, Paul1405, young fella, I am indeed a "young fella" having been created by the old codger behind me only a few short years ago, I think you are even younger than me. But that is not why I'm posting this one. I want to relate a real life true story to you about that old codger, I'll put it in the first person.
I used to have a very good mate who was an ex copper, 40 years service, never rose above the rank of Crown Sargent. My mate drank too much and smoked too much and sadly a while back passed on. I enjoyed nothing better than going out for a mornings fishing in the boat. It wasn't the fishing I enjoyed so much but more the old blokes company and the yak yak we used to engage in. At times I would take the piss out of him for being a copper, and he would give me a serve for being a "greenie", like "your not going to keep that one, are you, Bob Brown will excommunicate ya, if ya do" I would come back with something like "bad luck, put me under arrest, besides your chief witness (the fish) is dead!"
So, there is more to people than meets the eye, or what you read on a forum for that matter. P/s The ex copper one time helped me with "letterboxing" for the mod he hated, The Greens, was good enough to like me to the point where he would help promote a mob he hated, his take on doing that "so what, I need the exercise, besides they'll never get my vote. When he died The Libs lost a certain vote.

Dear Paul1405,

To be honest the post was written primarily to challenge o sung wu's post than to support your good self since it is something you hardly need, being more than capable of looking after yourself here.

You query the value of posting here against such strident and implacable views. For me it is twofold, the first is that such views posted in a public forum should not go unanswered. Somebody reading them may well think they have validity simply because they go unchallenged. Secondly the effort of constructing strong counter arguments forces from one research and depth that might not have otherwise have occurred. This can only be a good thing.

Dear o sung wu,

Thank you for your considered reply. Forgive me however as I must point out an obvious deficiency. You failed to address the primary question which I phrased thus;

“May I also inquire why the plea for conviviality was not also directed at Hasbeen who, from any fair reading of the thread, is obviously far more transgressive of the boundaries of convivial discourse than Paul1405?”

Putting aside your obviously high regard for Hasbeen I would ask you to consider who a reader of this specific thread, unhampered by your proclivities, might adjudge the less convivial, Hasbeen or Paul1405?

Secondly do you think humour serves to enhance or diminish conviviality? I would have thought the former. Paul1405 certainly endeavoured to utilise it yet none was forthcoming from Hasbeen. A not insignificant factor one would have thought but I await your opinion.
