It was an interesting link jayb thanks.
I remind you of the word complex, this issue is far more than stopping the boats.
I doubt that played any role in Howards thoughts when gifting that country.
Keiting too seemed to nearly crawl when addressing its leaders.
Diplomacy has many heads and many reasons to exist.
It has been in use in the western world at least, for hundreds of years.

Kevin Rudd made a dreadful mess of Indonesian/Australian relations by trashing John Howard's successful Pacific solution, causing thousands of economic migrants to swarm through Indonesia as their free stop and place to link with their people smuggler travel agents on their way to Australia.

Any wonder Indonesia isn't happy?

Then Rudd and the Labor mob had to increase surveillance on domestic Indonesian politics if only to manage the political debate back home where they were up to their ears trying to say that even if their policy had failed, the economic migrants weren't what they seemed to be, ie opportunists taking the places that should have gone to real refugees.

Then along comes the ABC, falling over its two left feet to help the scurrilous UK Guardian rag to sensationalise its 'scoop' of unverified 'information', that far from being in the public's interest to promote, created a diplomatic mess instead and was solely to increase the audience of the Guardian and for the ABC, to continue its left 'Progressive' spin.

Greg Sheridan's article, 'Spy story shows ABC at its left-wing worst' is spot-on,

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/opinion/columnists/spy-story-shows-abc-at-its-left-wing-worst/story-e6frg76f-1226771740588#

The only thing that makes this incident 'complex' is that it has rebounded on the authoritarian Left, Labor and the ABC.
